Scalpel blade remover and sharps container
Description
BladeFlask EVO is an advanced, single-handed scalpel blade remover combined with a puncture-proof sharps container. Designed by Qlicksmart, it safely removes and contains up to 100 contaminated scalpel blades in one enclosed unit, helping to prevent sharps injuries and infections. The device accommodates a wide range of scalpel handles and blades, including BP, bulbous, circular, hexagonal, Barron and post-mortem handles, making it suitable for mortuaries, dental surgery, ophthalmology, dermatology, plastic surgery and CSSDs. BladeFlask EVO incorporates an automatic shut-off counter, is compatible with a universal mounting bracket for wall, bench or trolley use, and meets sharps container standards such as AS 4031:1992.
Bnefits
- Single-handed scalpel blade removal reduces the risk of sharps injuries during blade changes
- Removes and securely contains up to approximately 100 scalpel blades per unit
- Functions as a puncture-proof sharps container, reducing exposure to contaminated blades after removal
- Compatible with a wide range of scalpel handles and blade sizes, including BP and post-mortem handles
- Built-in counter with automatic shut-off prevents overfilling and indicates when replacement is required
- Can be mounted using a universal mounting bracket for stable, point-of-use operation on walls, benches or trolleys
- Supports compliance with sharps safety practices and engineering control requirements in healthcare settings
- Provides a safer, cost-effective alternative to manual blade removal or the exclusive use of safety scalpels
Indications
- Single-handed removal and containment of used scalpel blades in clinical environments
- Use in mortuary, pathology and post-mortem facilities handling large autopsy and PM blades
- Use in dermatology, plastic surgery and ophthalmology theatres and procedure rooms
- Use in dental surgery and oral-maxillofacial clinics requiring frequent blade changes
- Use in central sterile services departments (CSSDs) for safe scalpel blade handling
- Use in outpatient clinics, laboratories and general theatres where BP and similar scalpel systems are used
Composition
- Body: Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) plastic, puncture-resistant
- Internal mechanism: ABS and stainless steel components
- Built-in mechanical counter and automatic shut-off mechanism
- External sharps container labelling and colour in accordance with local sharps regulations
Formulation
- Multi-use single-handed scalpel blade remover integrated with a non-reusable sharps container
- Blade capacity of approximately 100 blades per unit before automatic shut-off
- Compatible scalpel blades: BP blade sizes #6–#27 and PM blades up to PM 70 (and comparable sizes listed by manufacturer)
- Compatible scalpel handles: BP flat handles, bulbous PM range, hexagonal handles, circular handles, Barron handles and other specified surgical handles

Packaging
- Supplied as one BladeFlask EVO unit per box
- Mounting bracket (Qlicksmart Universal Mounting Bracket, code QBRGEN) sold separately in its own pack
- Retail/clinical packaging includes usage instructions, compatibility information and regulatory/sharps container markings
- Outer packaging suitable for storage and transport in clinical supply chains
Usage
- Mount the BladeFlask EVO on a wall, bench or trolley using the compatible universal mounting bracket according to the bracket’s fitting template and instructions.
- Ensure the device is securely fixed in the mounting bracket before use; the unit should not be handheld during blade removal.
- To remove a blade, place the scalpel blade onto the landing pad with the sharp edge facing to the indicated direction (typically to the right or with tang orientation as marked on the device).
- Push the scalpel handle upwards or along the ramp into the BladeFlask EVO until an audible “click”/“QLICK” is heard, confirming blade capture and containment.
- Pull the handle back and remove it from the device; the used blade will remain safely contained within the internal sharps container.
- Repeat the process for subsequent blades until the built-in counter indicates that capacity is reached and the device automatically shuts off (displays FULL or locks).
- Do not attempt to bypass or override the shut-off mechanism; once full, the unit must be disposed of as medical sharps waste.
- Follow institutional infection control guidelines and local regulations for the disposal of full sharps containers containing scalpel blades.
- Periodically check the counter status and external condition of the device; replace the unit promptly once it reaches full capacity or if damaged.
- Use only with compatible handles and blades as listed by the manufacturer; some brands or handle types may not be compatible.
Contraindications
- Not intended for use with incompatible scalpel handles or blades not listed by the manufacturer as compatible.
- Not suitable as a general waste container; for sharps (scalpel blades) only.
- Should not be used once the built-in counter has reached maximum capacity and the device has shut off.
- Not to be used if the housing, mechanism or mounting bracket is visibly damaged, cracked or unstable.
Adverse Effects
- Improper use (e.g. incorrect blade orientation or failure to mount securely) may result in incomplete removal or potential sharps exposure.
- Attempting to overfill or bypass the shut-off mechanism may increase sharps injury risk.
- Use with incompatible handles or blades may cause jamming or incomplete containment of blades.
- If not disposed of according to regulations, may pose infection or sharps hazard to waste handlers.
Storage Conditions
- Store unused units in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight and excessive heat to maintain plastic integrity.
- Keep in original packaging until installation to avoid contamination or mechanical damage.
- Do not place heavy objects on top of stored units to prevent warping or cracking of the ABS body.
- Once in use, keep the device mounted securely in its bracket at the point of use, away from excessive splashing or mechanical impact.
- Dispose of full units promptly according to institutional sharps disposal policies; do not store overfilled or damaged containers in clinical areas.
Duration
Not applicable; each unit is used repeatedly until approximately 100 blades have been removed and automatic shut-off is activated, after which the container is disposed of as sharps waste.
Onset
Provides immediate sharps safety and containment benefits from first use once mounted and used according to instructions.
