Catheter insertion and removal procedure pack

Description

The Cath-it Catheter Application/Removal Pack - Small - Single (NHS EHC522, RHC code 908410) is a sterile, latex-free catheterisation procedure pack from Richardson Healthcare. It is designed as a combined insertion and removal kit for urethral catheterisation, supplying the key accessories needed to perform safe catheter placement and removal using an aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT). The pack does not include the catheter, drainage bag, lubricant or inflation fluid, allowing clinicians to select the most appropriate catheter, leg bag and gel according to local formulary and patient needs. The twin-pack design separates insertion and removal components so the removal pack can remain sterile for later use when required.

Bnefits

  • Provides both insertion and removal components in one twin-pack, supporting the full catheterisation cycle with a single product.
  • Latex-free materials help reduce the risk of latex-related allergic reactions for patients and staff.
  • Supports aseptic non-touch technique (ANTT), helping to minimise catheter-associated urinary tract infection risk.
  • Compact, pre-assembled kit saves time in preparation compared with assembling separate items from stock.
  • Cost-effective alternative to larger catheterisation trays while still incorporating the key items needed for best practice.
  • Allows clinicians freedom to choose catheter size/type, leg bag and lubricant according to local guidelines and individual patient requirements.
  • Twin-pack system means the unused removal pack can be retained sterile and used at a later date, reducing wastage.
  • Clearly defined pack sizes (small/medium gloves for this SKU) support appropriate glove fit for the operator.

Indications

  • For use in urethral catheter insertion (initial catheterisation or re-catheterisation) in adults where a community or hospital catheterisation pack is required.
  • For use in urethral catheter removal, including trial without catheter (TWOC), where a structured aseptic removal procedure is indicated.
  • Suitable for acute hospital, outpatient, community and primary care settings where sterile catheterisation procedure packs are used.
  • Intended as an accessory/procedure pack only; a separate catheter, drainage bag, lubricant and balloon inflation fluid are required.

Composition

  • Twin sterile procedure pack configuration: one insertion pack and one removal pack sealed within an outer sterile pack (small/medium glove size for 908410/EHC522).
  • Insertion pack typically contains: sterile field, apron, bifurcated tray, approximately five non-woven balls, three non-woven swabs, waste/disposal bag, one pair of examination gloves (small/medium), fenestrated drape and modesty drape.
  • Removal pack typically contains: sterile field, 10 ml syringe for balloon deflation, non-woven swabs (e.g. three), waste/disposal bag and examination gloves (small/medium).
  • All patient-contacting items are latex-free as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Packaging and internal wrap designed so that the outer wrapping can be used as part of the aseptic working field.

Formulation

  • Sterile, single-use catheterisation procedure pack for catheter insertion and removal.
  • Non-pharmacological medical device accessory with no medicinal, immunological or metabolic mode of action.
  • Latex-free construction across pack contents.

Packaging

  • Supplied as a single Cath-it Catheter Application/Removal Pack – Small (glove size small/medium), catalog/ordering code 908410, NHS code EHC522.
  • Outer sterile pack containing two inner sterile sections: an insertion pack and a removal pack, each sealed to maintain sterility until use.
  • Commercial units from NHS Drug Tariff are typically packs of 5 (unit of issue 5) and trade cases of 20, while Medisave supplies a single pack configuration for end users.
  • Product labelling includes manufacturer (Richardson Healthcare), product name, size, RHC code 908410, PIP code 370-1034 and NHS code EHC522 where applicable.

Usage

  • Before any procedure, confirm the indication for catheter insertion or removal and check the patient’s identity, allergy status and consent according to local policy.
  • Wash hands with soap and water and dry thoroughly. Prepare a clean working surface.
  • Open the Cath-it application pack onto the cleaned work area, taking care not to contaminate the inner contents.
  • Unfold the outer wrapping or sterile field to create an aseptic working area, touching only the outer corners.
  • Put on the apron and use the waste bag supplied to organise items on the aseptic field and to collect used materials during the procedure.
  • Perform hand hygiene again using soap and water or alcohol hand gel, then apply sterile gloves of the appropriate size (small/medium for this SKU).
  • Apply the fenestrated drape and modesty drape to cover the patient’s genital area while maintaining access to the urethral meatus.
  • Cleanse the urethral orifice and surrounding area with saline using the non-woven balls and swabs from the pack, following local infection-prevention guidance.
  • Apply a suitable sterile lubricant or anaesthetic gel to the catheter in accordance with product instructions and local formulary (lubricant is not included in the pack).
  • Dispose of used gloves into the waste bag, perform hand hygiene again and apply a new pair of sterile gloves prior to handling the catheter.
  • Using an aseptic non-touch technique, insert the selected urethral catheter. Once urine flow is observed, advance according to local guidance and inflate the balloon with sterile water using an appropriate inflation syringe (not supplied in this pack).
  • Maintain non-touch technique while connecting the catheter to the chosen drainage system (leg bag or valve), ensuring all connections are secure.
  • Dispose of all used materials and gloves in line with local clinical waste policy and perform hand hygiene after the procedure.
  • For catheter removal, use the removal pack: perform hand hygiene, open the pack and set up the aseptic field, apron and waste bag as above.
  • Apply sterile gloves, attach the supplied 10 ml syringe to the catheter valve and fully deflate the retention balloon, following the catheter manufacturer’s guidance.
  • Gently withdraw the catheter, stopping if the patient experiences significant pain or resistance, and seek clinical advice if this occurs.
  • Cleanse the meatus with swabs if required, then dispose of the catheter and used equipment according to local policy and wash hands after completing the procedure.

Contraindications

  • Not to be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to any material contained in the pack (despite being latex-free, other material sensitivities may exist).
  • Not suitable as a stand-alone treatment for urinary retention or incontinence; it must be used in conjunction with an appropriate catheter, drainage system and clinical assessment.
  • Not appropriate where a different specialist catheterisation technique or bespoke pack is required (e.g. certain suprapubic or complex urological procedures) unless specifically approved by local policy.
  • Do not use if the sterile packaging is open, damaged or wet, or if the expiry date has passed.

Adverse Effects

  • No direct adverse pharmacological effects are expected because the pack contains non-medicinal devices and consumables.
  • If aseptic technique is not followed correctly, there is a potential risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infection or local infection at the urethral meatus.
  • Skin irritation or contact sensitivity may rarely occur from drapes, gloves or non-woven materials in susceptible individuals.
  • Improper use (e.g. inadequate balloon deflation before removal, or poor catheter insertion technique) can lead to urethral trauma, bleeding or pain, which are related to the catheter procedure rather than the pack itself.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat or humidity.
  • Keep packs in their original packaging until use to maintain sterility and protect from physical damage.
  • Avoid crushing, bending or stacking in a way that could damage the sterile seals or contents.
  • Observe the manufacturer’s expiry date and rotate stock so that older packs are used first.

Duration

Single-use procedure pack intended for use during one catheter insertion and one catheter removal episode. A fresh pack should be used for each catheter change or removal in line with local catheter-care protocols.

Onset

Provides the necessary sterile accessories to undertake catheter insertion or removal as soon as the pack is opened and the aseptic field is established.
