Skin cleansing and pre-injection wipes
Description
Clinell Alcoholic 2% Chlorhexidine Skin Wipes are individually wrapped, pre-saturated skin wipes containing 2% chlorhexidine gluconate in 70% isopropyl alcohol. They are designed for cleaning small areas of intact skin, particularly after dressing or plaster removal where dirt and adhesive residue may have accumulated, and may be used as a pre-injection skin wipe in some countries according to local regulations. The wipes are dermatologically tested, latex free and regulated as a biocidal product.

- Propan-2-ol (isopropyl alcohol) 68–75% w/w
- Chlorhexidine digluconate 2–2.5% w/w (equivalent to 2% chlorhexidine gluconate)
- Purified water 22.5–30% w/w
- Non-woven wipe substrate

Usage
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment as required by local policy (e.g. disposable gloves).
- Tear open one sachet and remove the wipe.
- Remove any plasters, dressings or medical equipment from the area to be cleaned.
- Wipe the area of intact skin to be cleaned thoroughly, ensuring full coverage.
- Do not use the wipe on open wounds or broken skin.
- If the wipe becomes dry or heavily soiled, discard and use a fresh wipe.
- Allow the skin to air dry; do not blow dry or wipe off the solution before the contact time has elapsed according to local protocol.
- Discard used wipes and sachets in the appropriate clinical waste stream; do not flush or macerate.
Contraindications
- Do not use on open wounds or broken skin.
- Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
- Not for ingestion or internal use.
- Do not use on large body surface areas or for prolonged repeated applications without following local risk assessment and protocols.
- Do not use near sources of ignition due to flammable alcohol content.
Adverse Effects
- May cause eye irritation if the solution comes into contact with the eyes.
- Vapours from the alcohol component may cause drowsiness or dizziness in poorly ventilated areas with heavy exposure.
- Prolonged or repeated exposure to the liquid may cause mild skin irritation in some individuals.
- Ingestion of significant amounts of the liquid can cause intoxication and gastrointestinal discomfort.
- Contains chlorhexidine, which is known in general to be associated with rare hypersensitivity reactions; monitor patients for signs of irritation or intolerance during use.
Storage Conditions
- Store below 25°C in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place.
- Keep away from direct sunlight and sources of heat or ignition.
- Do not allow the product to freeze.
- Keep the outer carton closed when not in use and protect sachets from damage.
- Store in accordance with local regulations for flammable, alcohol-containing products.
Duration
Single-use application per sachet; used once per cleaning episode immediately before or after the relevant procedure (e.g. dressing removal or pre-injection skin preparation).
Onset
Rapid antimicrobial action during the contact period while the alcohol-based solution remains wet on the skin.
