Pre-admission chlorhexidine patient bathing wipes

Description

Clinell Chlorhexidine Wash Cloths - Pack of 8 are skin-friendly, one-step antimicrobial bathing cloths impregnated with 2% chlorhexidine gluconate. They are designed for whole-body, rinse-free patient cleansing prior to surgery or invasive procedures and for routine ITU/ICU bed bathing. The chlorhexidine not only provides rapid bactericidal action against a broad spectrum of microorganisms but also binds to the skin, offering up to six hours of residual protection and creating an invisible antibacterial barrier during the patient’s hospital stay.

Bnefits

  • Provides a complete, rinse-free whole-body wash in a single patient pack of 8 large cloths.
  • Contains 2% chlorhexidine gluconate to reduce harmful skin flora and help prevent infections.
  • Chlorhexidine binds to the skin, forming an invisible antibacterial barrier that can last for up to six hours.
  • Offers rapid bactericidal action against a wide range of microorganisms relevant to healthcare-associated infections.
  • Ideal for pre-admission patient washing prior to surgery or invasive procedures.
  • Suitable for intensive care and high-dependency settings as an alternative to traditional bed baths.
  • Single-patient packs help reduce the risk of cross-contamination between patients.
  • Can be used warm or at room temperature; compatible with Clinell warmers or a microwave for enhanced patient comfort.
  • Cloths are large (approximately 20 x 30 cm) and heavy (about 60 gsm) to ensure thorough skin coverage and durability.
  • Rinse-free formulation saves time and water and avoids the need to move or shower vulnerable patients.

Indications

  • Pre-admission whole-body cleansing before surgery or invasive procedures, as directed by local protocol.
  • Routine antiseptic bed bathing in intensive care and high-dependency units.
  • Antiseptic cleansing of patients at increased risk of infection or colonisation with multidrug-resistant organisms, as part of a chlorhexidine bathing protocol.
  • Use in hospital wards, surgical units and other clinical environments where enhanced skin decontamination is required.
  • For use on intact skin only, as an adjunct to standard infection prevention measures.

Composition

  • Chlorhexidine digluconate (providing 2% chlorhexidine gluconate in the impregnating solution; average concentration of chlorhexidine digluconate up to approximately 2.65% w/w).
  • Benzalkonium chloride (<0.5% w/w) as an additional quaternary ammonium antimicrobial agent.
  • Propane-1,2-diol (propylene glycol) as a humectant and solvent.
  • Water and other excipients, including surfactants, moisturisers and stabilisers.
  • Non-woven airlaid wipe substrate (white, moist cloth) with a clear, colourless eluate.

Formulation

  • Rinse-free, water-based antiseptic solution impregnated into airlaid non-woven wash cloths.
  • Active antiseptic system based on 2% chlorhexidine gluconate, with benzalkonium chloride as a secondary biocidal agent.
  • Mildly acidic to neutral pH (approximately 4–7), designed for skin compatibility.
  • Non-flammable, water-based product with characteristic mild odour.
  • Designed as a one-step cleansing and disinfecting formulation that does not require rinsing after use.

Packaging

  • Pack of 8 large wash cloths intended for use on a single patient.
  • Cloth size approximately 20 x 30 cm.
  • Wipe weight approximately 60 gsm for robust, high-capacity wiping.
  • Individual patient packs designed to deliver a full-body cleanse (one pack per patient).
  • Supplied as part of the Clinell chlorhexidine bathing range; outer cases typically contain multiple 8-cloth packs for hospital use.

Usage

  • Ensure the patient’s skin is visibly clean of heavy soiling before use; if necessary, remove gross contamination first.
  • Open one pack for a single patient only; do not share packs between patients.
  • Cloths may be used at room temperature or warmed in a Clinell-approved warmer or microwave according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Use all 8 cloths to cleanse the entire body, using a new cloth for each area in the recommended sequence (for example: 1) neck and torso, 2) back, 3) left arm and axilla, 4) right arm and axilla, 5) left leg and foot, 6) right leg and foot, 7) buttocks, 8) groin and surrounding area – avoiding genital mucosa).
  • Wipe each area thoroughly, ensuring complete coverage of the skin with the chlorhexidine solution.
  • Do not rinse off after use; allow the skin to air dry completely so that the chlorhexidine can remain on the skin and provide residual protection.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, inside the ears, mouth, mucous membranes and open wounds.
  • Dispose of used cloths and the empty pack in the appropriate clinical or domestic waste stream as per local policy; do not flush.
  • For patients unable to wash themselves, nursing staff or caregivers should assist with the full-body cleanse following local infection prevention procedures.

Contraindications

  • Do not use on patients with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to chlorhexidine, benzalkonium chloride, propylene glycol or any other listed ingredients.
  • Not for use on mucous membranes, including eyes, inside the ears, mouth or genital mucosa.
  • Do not apply to open wounds, broken skin or extensively damaged skin unless specifically directed by a healthcare professional.
  • Use with caution in neonates and very young infants, following local clinical guidance on chlorhexidine use.
  • Discontinue use if significant skin irritation, redness or signs of an allergic reaction occur, and seek medical advice.

Adverse Effects

  • Product is intended for skin use and is generally well tolerated when used as directed.
  • May cause eye irritation if the solution comes into contact with the eyes.
  • Mild, transient skin irritation or dryness may occur, particularly with repeated use on sensitive skin.
  • Rarely, hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to chlorhexidine or other components (such as benzalkonium chloride or propylene glycol) may occur; these can manifest as rash, itching, erythema or, very rarely, more serious reactions.
  • If signs of irritation or allergy occur, use should be stopped and medical advice sought.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight.
  • Do not allow the product to freeze.
  • Keep packs tightly closed until use to prevent the cloths from drying out.
  • Avoid exposure to excessive heat and sources of ignition; follow manufacturer guidance when warming cloths.
  • Store out of reach of children and in accordance with local regulations for biocidal/antiseptic products.

Duration

Single pack provides one complete full-body wash for a single patient; typically used once prior to procedures or once daily in ITU/ICU as part of a chlorhexidine bathing protocol, with residual antibacterial effect lasting for up to six hours after application.

Onset

Rapid onset of antiseptic action upon application to the skin, with persistent activity and an antibacterial barrier maintained for several hours (up to approximately six hours) while chlorhexidine remains bound to the skin.
