Surface Disinfectant Spray
Description
Clinell Universal Disinfectant Spray 500ml is an alcohol-free, near-neutral pH surface detergent and disinfectant spray for routine cleaning and disinfection of hard surfaces and non-invasive medical devices. It contains a patented combination of quaternary ammonium compounds and a polymeric biguanide to provide broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, killing at least 99.99–99.999% of common healthcare pathogens from 10 seconds contact time, including bacteria, viruses (such as coronavirus), fungi and mycobacteria. Supplied in a convenient 500 ml trigger spray bottle, it is designed to reach large and hard-to-access areas and replaces the need for multiple separate surface cleaners and disinfectants.
Bnefits
- Cleans and disinfects in a single step, simplifying routine decontamination workflows.
- Broad-spectrum efficacy, killing at least 99.99–99.999% of bacteria, enveloped and many non-enveloped viruses, fungi and mycobacteria.
- Effective from as little as 10 seconds contact time for many organisms, with 30–60 seconds typically recommended for full virucidal activity including coronavirus.
- Alcohol-free formulation reduces the risk of drying or damaging sensitive materials and is suitable where alcohol is contraindicated.
- Near-neutral pH and excellent material compatibility, safe on a wide range of plastics, metals, rubbers and other common healthcare surfaces.
- Patented mix of multiple biocides with different mechanisms of action to minimise the risk of antimicrobial resistance developing.
- Designed as a universal product for both general hard surfaces and non-invasive medical devices, reducing the need for multiple surface products.
- Trigger spray format makes it ideal for large areas and hard-to-reach or complex surfaces such as keyboards, trolleys, bed frames and door handles.
- Residual activity on surfaces for extended protection (often cited up to 72 hours in marketing claims, depending on conditions).
- Dermatologically tested and marketed as skin-friendly when used as directed on intact skin contact areas, while still not intended as a hand disinfectant.
Indications
- Routine cleaning and disinfection of non-invasive medical devices (e.g. blood pressure cuffs, monitors, ultrasound probes used non-invasively, stethoscopes) according to local infection-prevention policies.
- Disinfection and cleaning of hard, non-porous environmental surfaces in clinical and dental settings, including couches, trolleys, worktops and treatment chairs.
- Decontamination of frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, light switches, bed rails, keyboards, telephones and hand rails.
- Use in aesthetic, dermatology and cosmetic clinics to disinfect treatment couches, trolleys and other shared equipment between patients.
- Surface disinfection in other professional environments such as care homes, ambulances, laboratories and office clinical rooms.
- Situations requiring a rapid-acting, ready-to-use, alcohol-free surface disinfectant effective against common healthcare-associated pathogens including MRSA, VRE, norovirus and coronaviruses.
Composition
- Benzalkonium chloride (~0.45% w/w) – quaternary ammonium compound biocide.
- Didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (~0.40% w/w) – quaternary ammonium compound biocide.
- Polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) – polymeric biguanide biocide present at low concentration.
- Non-ionic surfactants and detergents to aid soil removal and cleaning.
- Chelating and sequestering agents to enhance performance in hard water and on soiled surfaces.
- Fragrance and other minor formulation excipients.
- Purified water (aqua) as the main carrier (typically >75% of the formulation).
Formulation
- Ready-to-use, water-based, alcohol-free surface detergent and disinfectant solution.
- Quaternary ammonium and biguanide-based biocidal system with near-neutral pH.
- Supplied as a trigger spray for direct application to surfaces or onto a cloth.
Packaging
- 500 ml plastic bottle with trigger spray nozzle.
- Typically supplied as individual bottles and also in trade outer packs / cases (e.g. 12 x 500 ml) for clinics.
- Labelled with full instructions for use, safety information, batch number and expiry date.
Usage
- Check the product label and local infection-prevention policy before use; wear appropriate personal protective equipment if required.
- Ensure the target surface or non-invasive medical device is visibly clean; if heavily soiled, remove gross contamination before disinfection.
- To open, pull the trigger slightly and twist the nozzle from the closed position to the spray position as indicated on the nozzle head.
- Spray the Clinell Universal solution evenly onto the surface from a short distance, ensuring complete coverage; alternatively spray onto a clean cloth and wipe the surface.
- Wipe the surface in an S-shaped pattern from clean to dirty areas, avoiding re-contaminating cleaned sections and changing cloths if they become visibly dirty or dry.
- Ensure the surface remains visibly wet for at least the recommended contact time (commonly 1 minute to cover full virucidal claims, although many bacteria are killed from 10 seconds).
- Allow the surface to air-dry after the contact time; do not rinse unless specifically directed by local protocol or manufacturer guidance.
- Do not mix with other cleaning agents or disinfectants and avoid simultaneous use with anionic detergents which may inactivate quaternary ammonium compounds.
- Not intended as a hand or skin disinfectant; avoid deliberate application to broken skin, mucous membranes or eyes.
- After use, turn the nozzle back to the closed or off position and store the bottle upright with cap and trigger securely closed.
Contraindications
- Not for injection, ingestion or any internal use.
- Not intended for direct application to eyes, mucous membranes or broken skin.
- Not suitable for sterilising invasive or critical medical devices that require high-level disinfection or sterilisation processes.
- Avoid use on surfaces known to be incompatible with water-based quaternary ammonium disinfectants (e.g. certain unsealed or delicate materials) without testing on a small inconspicuous area first.
- Do not use in combination with other cleaning or disinfectant chemicals that may react or reduce efficacy, particularly anionic detergents and strong oxidising agents.
- Individuals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to quaternary ammonium compounds or PHMB should avoid direct contact with the wet product.
Adverse Effects
- May cause eye irritation if splashed; can result in redness, watering and discomfort.
- May cause mild skin irritation or allergic contact dermatitis in sensitised individuals due to PHMB or quaternary ammonium compounds.
- Inhalation of mist or spray in poorly ventilated areas may cause transient respiratory irritation or coughing.
- Ingestion may cause irritation of the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract and should be treated as an exposure requiring medical advice.
- Prolonged or repeated contact without appropriate protective measures (e.g. gloves) may increase the risk of irritation or sensitisation.
Storage Conditions
- Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place.
- Keep away from extremes of temperature; do not freeze and avoid prolonged storage above approximately 25–30°C.
- Protect from direct sunlight and sources of heat to preserve product stability and efficacy.
- Keep out of reach of children and unauthorised persons.
- Avoid storing in close proximity to strong oxidising agents or incompatible chemicals.
- Do not decant into unlabelled or inappropriate containers; always retain original labelling and batch / expiry information.
Duration
Used as a one-step surface cleaner and disinfectant during each decontamination episode; there is no fixed treatment course. Surfaces should be re-cleaned and disinfected as often as indicated by local infection-control protocols (e.g. between patients and at regular intervals during the day).
Onset
Rapid onset; begins killing many bacteria from around 10 seconds contact time, with full label claims for viruses such as coronaviruses typically achieved within 30\u201360 seconds when the surface is kept wet.
