Dental unit waterline disinfectant (weekly treatment concentrate)
Description
Continu Disinfectant for Dental Unit Water Lines 5 Litres is a CE-marked, water-based disinfectant concentrate designed for weekly treatment of dental unit waterlines and bottles. Manufactured by Nuview Ltd, the solution is independently proven to achieve a 99.999% reduction in Legionella in accordance with EN 13623, and is highly effective at removing biofilm to provide long-term reduction in microbial contamination of dental unit water systems. The product is used at a 50:50 dilution with water; on a chair with a 1-litre bottle, a single 5-litre container provides approximately 10 weekly treatment cycles, offering a very cost-effective solution. Being gentle, non-corrosive and alcohol-free, Continu does not damage bottles, pipes or dental handpiece lines when used as directed, and is fully compliant with HTM 01-05 requirements for dental unit waterline disinfection.

Packaging
- Container size: 5 litre bottle of Continu Dental Unit Water Line Disinfectant
- Product format: liquid concentrate supplied in a robust plastic container with screw cap
- Manufacturer product code: USL 2005 (5 Litre)
- Typical content: 1 x 5 litre bottle per unit
- Supplied as a non-sterile solution for use in dental unit water bottles and lines only
Usage
- Ensure the dental unit is prepared for waterline maintenance and follow local infection-control and health-and-safety procedures, including use of appropriate personal protective equipment if required.
- At the start of the weekly disinfection procedure, remove the dental unit water bottle from the chair and empty any remaining water or previous solution safely, following local waste disposal guidelines.
- Prepare the Continu Dental Unit Water Line Disinfectant at a 50:50 dilution ratio by mixing equal volumes of concentrate and suitable water (for example, 500 ml of Continu with 500 ml of water for a 1 litre bottle), unless alternative instructions on the product label or local protocol state otherwise.
- Fill the clean dental unit bottle with the freshly prepared 50:50 Continu solution and securely reattach the bottle to the dental chair in accordance with the chair manufacturer’s instructions.
- Operate the dental unit to draw the diluted disinfectant through all relevant waterlines (e.g. handpieces, three-in-one syringes, scaler lines) until the solution has displaced the existing water and is present at each outlet, ensuring that all lines are filled with the disinfectant.
- Once all lines have been primed with the disinfectant solution, stop the flow and leave the solution standing in the bottle and lines for the manufacturer’s recommended contact period as part of the weekly treatment (typically an extended period such as overnight or between clinical sessions, as defined by local protocol).
- Before treating patients, remove the bottle containing the used disinfectant solution, empty any remaining solution and rinse the bottle thoroughly with clean water.
- Refill the bottle with clean water (for example, distilled or demineralised water as recommended by the chair or infection-control guidance) and reattach it to the unit.
- Flush the dental unit waterlines with clean water for the duration specified on the product label or in local protocols to ensure that disinfectant residues are removed from the bottle and tubing prior to patient use.
- Repeat the above steps as part of a weekly disinfection schedule for each dental chair, and do not mix Continu with other waterline chemicals or disinfectants in the same bottle or lines.
Contraindications
- Not for direct application to patients; do not use as a mouth rinse, skin antiseptic or surface disinfectant.
- Do not use on or in direct contact with patients’ oral tissues, eyes or skin.
- Do not mix with other chemicals, disinfectants or cleaners in the dental unit bottle or waterlines.
- Do not use in systems or equipment not compatible with quaternary ammonium compound-based disinfectants without confirming compatibility with the manufacturer.
- Do not use undiluted in dental unit bottles if the label or local protocol specifies a 50:50 dilution with water.
Adverse Effects
- When used according to instructions in dental unit waterlines, no significant adverse health effects are expected for staff or patients because the system is flushed with clean water prior to patient treatment.
- Direct eye contact with the concentrate or diluted solution may cause mild, transient irritation, redness or watering; rinse immediately with plenty of clean water and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
- Ingestion of the solution may cause mild irritation; rinse the mouth and seek medical attention if symptoms occur or persist.
- Prolonged or repeated skin contact with the concentrate may cause mild irritation in susceptible individuals; wash with soap and water if contact occurs.
Storage Conditions
- Store upright at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
- Keep container tightly closed when not in use to prevent contamination or spillage.
- Do not freeze and avoid exposure to extreme temperatures that could affect product performance.
- Keep out of reach of children and unauthorised personnel.
- Do not store near strong oxidising agents or strong acids, and do not mix with other chemicals.
- Dispose of partly used product and empty containers in accordance with local environmental and waste disposal regulations.
Duration
Used as a once-weekly dental unit waterline disinfectant; at a 50:50 dilution on a chair with a 1 litre bottle, a single 5 litre container provides approximately 10 weekly treatment cycles for one chair.
Onset
Antimicrobial activity begins during the contact period while the diluted solution is held within the dental unit bottle and lines, with long-term reduction in biofilm and Legionella achieved when used as part of a regular weekly protocol.
