Reusable outer packaging for Biological Substance \u2013 Category B (UN3373) diagnostic specimens
Description
The DANIELS® Diagnostic Specimen Container 30 Litre is a robust, reusable transport container designed as the outer packaging for Biological Substance – Category B (UN3373) diagnostic specimens. With a nominal capacity of 30 litres, it is intended for larger collections of samples from clinics, GP surgeries and community settings to be transported on the public highway to hospitals or laboratories for analysis. The container features a double hinged lid secured by latches at the front corners, allowing it to be kept open for loading and then closed securely by pushing down on the lid when ready for transport. Tested to UN drop-test requirements and compliant with UN Packaging Instruction 650, it provides UN-approved packaging for diagnostic specimens assigned to UN3373, making it ideal for transport departments or carriers offering specimen collection and delivery services.

- Containers are supplied empty; internal secondary packaging (specimen bags, tubes, racks, absorbent material) is not included
Usage
- Ensure users are trained in local policies and in the handling and transport of UN3373 diagnostic specimens.
- Prepare specimens in accordance with applicable regulations (triple packaging principle): place the primary specimen receptacle (e.g. blood tube, sample pot) into a leak-proof secondary packaging, such as a sealed plastic bag or secondary container with absorbent material.
- Verify that all secondary packages are sealed correctly and appropriately labelled before loading into the Diagnostic Specimen Container.
- Open the container by releasing the front corner latches and lifting the double hinged lid. The lid can be kept open during loading.
- Place the sealed secondary packages inside the polypropylene container, arranging them in a stable configuration to minimise movement during transit. Do not overfill.
- Once all specimens are loaded, close the lid fully and secure it by engaging both front corner latches, ensuring it is firmly closed for transport.
- If using the in-car bracket (DD507), place or lock the container into the bracket in the vehicle boot or designated load area to prevent tipping or sliding during travel.
- Transport the container on the public highway in accordance with local and national regulations for UN3373 Biological Substance – Category B, ensuring appropriate vehicle signage and documentation if required.
- On arrival at the laboratory or receiving facility, open the container in a designated area, remove the secondary packages and process them according to laboratory procedures.
- After unloading, inspect the container for contamination; clean and disinfect surfaces with products compatible with polypropylene if required, then allow to dry before re-use.
- Routinely inspect the container (body, lid, hinges, latches) for damage or wear and remove from service if its integrity is compromised.
Contraindications
- Not suitable for transporting substances outside the scope of UN3373 regulations (e.g. infectious substances of Category A such as UN2814 or UN2900) unless formally assessed and approved by relevant authorities.
- Not intended for use as a primary specimen receptacle or secondary leak-proof packaging; it is designed solely as the rigid outer packaging in the triple-packaging system.
- Should not be used if the container body, lid, hinges or latches are cracked, deformed or otherwise damaged so that secure closure cannot be guaranteed.
- Not designed for autoclaving or high-temperature sterilisation cycles which could deform polypropylene unless explicitly validated.
- Use outside of UN Packaging Instruction 650 and local Carriage of Dangerous Goods regulations without appropriate risk assessment is contraindicated.
Adverse Effects
- No direct patient adverse effects are expected, as this product is a non-contact transport container.
- Improper use (e.g. failure to use suitable leak-proof secondary packaging, overfilling, incomplete closure of the lid latches) may increase the risk of specimen leakage or spillage, with potential exposure for staff and contamination of vehicles or premises.
- Using a damaged or compromised container could lead to loss of structural integrity during transport and potential release of specimens.
- Inadequate cleaning after contamination may increase infection control risks or cross-contamination between consignments.
Storage Conditions
- Store the container in a clean, dry indoor environment when not in active use, away from direct sunlight and excessive heat to prevent UV or heat-related degradation of polypropylene.
- Avoid placing heavy objects on top of the container that could deform the lid or sides.
- When carried in vehicles, secure the container using the appropriate in-car bracket or other approved restraint system to prevent movement and damage.
- Clean with compatible detergents and disinfectants recommended for polypropylene surfaces; avoid highly aggressive solvents that may weaken or craze the plastic.
- Inspect regularly for signs of damage, discolouration, cracking or latch wear and remove any compromised containers from service.
Duration
Not applicable \u2013 this is a reusable diagnostic specimen transport container rather than a medical treatment. It is intended for repeated long-term use, subject to regular inspection, cleaning and replacement if damaged or worn.
Onset
Not applicable in a clinical sense. Compliance and safety benefits (secure, UN3373-compliant outer packaging for diagnostic specimens) are realised immediately when the container is correctly packed, closed and used in accordance with UN Packaging Instruction 650 and local transport regulations.
