Blood transfusion set

Description

The BD Gravity Blood Set (VH-94-UK) is a single-use, sterile gravity blood administration set designed for the transfusion of blood and blood components. It features a 282 cm polyvinyl chloride (PVC) primary line with a 20-drop/mL unvented spiked drip chamber incorporating a 200 µm filter, an auxiliary set of 120 cm with a blue-handled stopcock, a ball-valve drip chamber, one roller clamp for flow control, priming cap, and two rotating male luer connectors. The set is latex-free and lipid-resistant and is supplied in a case quantity of 50 individually packaged sets.

Bnefits

  • Designed specifically for gravity administration of blood and blood components using a dedicated blood filter.
  • Long 282 cm primary line and 120 cm auxiliary set provide flexibility in positioning blood bags and infusion sites.
  • 200 µm drip chamber filter helps remove clots and particulate matter from blood products during transfusion.
  • 20 drops per mL drip chamber supports standardised manual calculation and adjustment of flow rates.
  • Roller clamp allows fine control of transfusion rate during gravity administration.
  • Ball valve drip chamber and blue stopcock handle facilitate efficient priming and flow management.
  • Two rotating male luer connectors support secure, tangle-free connection to vascular access devices and auxiliary lines.
  • Latex-free, lipid-resistant PVC construction reduces risk of latex allergy and is compatible with lipid-containing solutions.
  • Single-use, sterile device supports infection prevention and patient safety.

Indications

  • Gravity administration of whole blood, packed red cells and other blood components where a 200 µm blood filter is appropriate.
  • Use in hospital wards, theatres, emergency departments and other clinical settings requiring blood transfusion via gravity sets.
  • Situations requiring a long blood line and auxiliary set for flexible placement of blood bags and infusion points.

Composition

  • Primary tubing: polyvinyl chloride (PVC), lipid-resistant, approximately 282 cm in length.
  • Auxiliary set: PVC tubing approximately 120 cm in length.
  • Drip chamber: unvented, 20 drops/mL, with integrated 200 µm blood filter and ball valve design.
  • Spike: single, non-vented spike for connection to blood bags or compatible containers.
  • Flow control: one roller clamp on the primary line.
  • Stopcock: blue-handled stopcock on auxiliary set for flow direction control.
  • Connectors: two male luer connectors, rotating, for secure attachment to IV access devices and auxiliary lines.
  • Priming cap: provided to facilitate priming and maintain sterility before connection.
  • Material safety: natural rubber latex is not part of the material formulation.

Formulation

  • Sterile, single-use gravity blood administration set.
  • Primary line length: 282 cm.
  • Auxiliary set length: 120 cm.
  • Bore: 4.1 mm.
  • Drip chamber: unvented spiked chamber, 20 drops/mL, 200 µm filter.
  • Tubing material: PVC, lipid-resistant, latex-free.

Packaging

  • Supplied as a pack of 50 gravity blood sets.
  • Each set is individually sterile wrapped for single use.
  • Outer case/box labelled with product name, brand (BD), reference VH-94-UK, and quantity 50.
  • Intended for professional healthcare use in clinical environments.

Usage

  • For use only by trained healthcare professionals familiar with blood transfusion procedures.
  • Check the packaging before use; do not use if the sterile pack is damaged, open, or past the expiry date.
  • Close the roller clamp before spiking the blood bag.
  • Using aseptic technique, insert the spike fully into the blood bag port.
  • Invert and gently squeeze the drip chamber to fill it to the recommended level, ensuring the 200 µm filter is fully covered.
  • Prime the entire line and auxiliary set with blood, expelling all air from the tubing and connectors.
  • Connect the rotating male luer to the patient’s venous access device securely.
  • Open the roller clamp and adjust to achieve the prescribed transfusion rate, monitoring the drip rate and patient response throughout the transfusion.
  • Use the blue stopcock and auxiliary set as required for flow control according to local protocol.
  • Dispose of the entire set as clinical waste immediately after the transfusion; do not re-use or re-sterilise.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if the sterile packaging is damaged, opened, or beyond the labelled expiration date.
  • Do not reuse or re-sterilise; re-use may result in infection, device failure, or patient harm.
  • Not suitable for patients with known hypersensitivity to any material in the set, such as PVC, if clinically relevant.
  • Do not use for fluids or blood products that are contraindicated for administration via standard PVC gravity blood sets.
  • Do not use without an appropriate blood filter where clinically indicated; only use in accordance with institutional transfusion policies.

Adverse Effects

  • Risk of infection or sepsis if aseptic technique is not followed or if the device is reused.
  • Risk of air embolism if the line is not properly primed and air remains in the tubing.
  • Potential for haemolysis or under-/over-transfusion if flow rate is not correctly controlled.
  • Potential local complications at the vascular access site (e.g., infiltration, phlebitis, extravasation) related to IV access rather than the set itself.
  • Possible hypersensitivity or intolerance reactions related to materials in the device in susceptible patients.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
  • Keep in original packaging until immediately before use to maintain sterility.
  • Protect from moisture and mechanical damage to packaging.
  • Observe and adhere to the manufacturer’s labelled expiry date.
  • Keep out of reach of unauthorised persons and children.

Duration

Used only for the duration of a single blood or blood component transfusion and then discarded. It is not intended for prolonged or repeated use on the same patient.

Onset

Not applicable; this is a medical device used to administer blood products and has no pharmacological onset of effect itself.
