Blood & Body Fluid Spill Disinfectant Granules
Description
Haz-tab disinfectant granules (500g tub) are high-absorbency, chlorine-releasing NaDCC (sodium dichloroisocyanurate) granules designed for the rapid absorption, disinfection and safe disposal of blood and blood-stained body fluid spillages, providing effective protection against a broad spectrum of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi and viruses (such as HIV and hepatitis).
Bnefits
- Provides combined absorption and disinfection of blood and blood-stained body fluid spillages in a single step.
- Granules rapidly absorb liquid, containing the spill and making it easier and safer to collect and dispose of.
- Contains NaDCC (sodium dichloroisocyanurate), a powerful chlorine-releasing agent proven effective against bacteria, fungi and viruses.
- Recommended for the disinfection of blood and blood-stained body fluid spills in healthcare and similar professional environments.
- Reduces risk of operator exposure to infectious material during spill clean up.
- Eliminates the need to mop up spills with paper towels, which can spread contamination, drip and are difficult to handle, particularly where broken glass or sharps are present.
- Chlorine release during absorption ensures the spill area is disinfected while being contained.
- Supplied in an easy-to-handle 500g shaker tub suitable for multiple spill incidents.
Indications
- Disinfection and absorption of blood and blood-stained body fluid spills on hard, non-porous environmental surfaces.
- Use in hospitals, clinics, surgeries, laboratories, care homes and other professional healthcare or institutional settings.
- Management of biohazard spills where protection against blood-borne viruses (e.g., HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C) is required.
- Use as part of blood and body fluid spillage kits and infection-control protocols for environmental decontamination.
Composition
- Active chlorinating agent: NaDCC (sodium dichloroisocyanurate), also referred to as troclosene sodium, as the disinfectant component.
- Inert absorbent carrier granules formulated to rapidly absorb blood and other body fluids.
- Fragrance-free, non-effervescent, chlorine-releasing absorbent granule blend (exact proprietary formulation as per manufacturer’s safety data sheet).
Formulation
- Dosage form: high-absorbency, non-effervescent disinfectant granules.
- Active ingredient: NaDCC (sodium dichloroisocyanurate/troclosene sodium) in a solid granular matrix.
- Presentation: 500g plastic shaker tub for controlled sprinkling over spills.
- Type: chlorine-releasing biocidal product for professional use on environmental surfaces.
- Mode of action: combines physical absorption of liquid with release of available chlorine for chemical disinfection.
Packaging
- 500g tub of Haz-tab disinfectant granules with closure suitable for secure storage and controlled dispensing.
- Clearly labelled with product name, intended use (disinfection and absorption of blood and blood-stained body fluids), hazard information and basic directions for use.
- Supplied as a non-sterile product for external environmental use only; typically boxed or shipped within outer cartons by distributors.
Usage
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as disposable gloves, apron and eye/face protection according to local infection-control policy before dealing with any body fluid spill.
- cordon or isolate the affected area to prevent access and accidental spread of the spill.
- Sprinkle Haz-tab disinfectant granules liberally over the entire surface of the blood or blood-stained body fluid spill, ensuring full coverage of the liquid.
- Allow sufficient contact time for the granules to absorb the fluid fully and for available chlorine to disinfect the spill area (typically several minutes, or in accordance with local policy/manufacturer guidance).
- Once absorption is complete and the spill is safely contained within the granules, use a suitable scoop and scraper or other dedicated disposable tools to collect the contaminated granules and any sharps or debris.
- Place all collected waste, including used granules, disposable tools and other contaminated materials, into an appropriate clinical/biohazard waste bag or container for disposal according to local regulations.
- After removal of the absorbed spill, clean the affected surface with a suitable detergent or disinfectant solution if required by local protocols, and remove PPE safely, performing hand hygiene immediately afterwards.
- Do not mix Haz-tab granules with acids, ammonium-containing products or other chemicals, as this may release hazardous gases; follow all hazard and precautionary statements on the label and safety data sheet.
Contraindications
- Not for use on skin, wounds or any form of direct patient treatment.
- Not for ingestion or internal use.
- Do not use on delicate or chlorine-sensitive surfaces, fabrics or materials that could be damaged or discoloured by strong oxidising agents.
- Do not mix with acids, ammonium compounds or other cleaning chemicals, as this may liberate toxic chlorine-containing gases.
- Not recommended for use in confined spaces without adequate ventilation when large quantities are applied.
Adverse Effects
- Harmful if swallowed; ingestion may cause irritation or injury to the gastrointestinal tract.
- Causes serious eye irritation; contact with eyes may result in redness, pain and possible corneal injury.
- May cause respiratory irritation if dust or aerosols are inhaled, especially in poorly ventilated areas.
- Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause irritation or dryness in sensitive individuals.
- Very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects; spillage of concentrated granules or solutions into watercourses should be avoided.
- Contact with acids can release toxic chlorine gas, posing inhalation and respiratory hazards.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
- Keep the tub tightly closed when not in use to protect from moisture and maintain product stability.
- Store in original container and keep away from acids, reducing agents, combustible materials and ammonium-containing products.
- Avoid contamination with organic materials and other chemicals that may react with chlorine-releasing agents.
- Store out of reach of children and unauthorised persons and in accordance with local regulations for oxidising and hazardous substances.
Duration
Used as a single-episode intervention applied for the duration of spill containment and disinfection, typically over several minutes until absorption and safe removal are complete.
Onset
Begins to act immediately upon contact with the spill as the granules absorb liquid and release available chlorine; effective disinfection is achieved following the recommended contact time.
