Packaging

  • Box of 100 sterile, individually packaged Infusomat® Space Line PVC 250 cm sets.
  • Each set supplied sterile in a peel-open blister or pouch suitable for aseptic handling.
  • Outer carton labelled with product name, brand, reference/article number (e.g. 8700036SP), lot number and expiry date.
  • Single-use device; intended for use on one patient and one continuous infusion course only.

Usage

  • Verify the integrity of the sterile packaging and check product label, length (250 cm), reference number and expiry date before use.
  • Open the sterile packaging using aseptic technique and remove the administration set.
  • Close the roller clamp and ensure the set-based free-flow protection clamp is in the correct position as per pump instructions.
  • Insert the sharp piercing spike into the IV fluid container port; open the drip chamber and fill it to the recommended level by gently squeezing.
  • Open the roller clamp to prime the line, ensuring the 15 µm fluid filter is fully wetted and all air is expelled from the tubing; then close the clamp.
  • Load the silicone pump segment into the B. Braun Infusomat® Space®, Infusomat® Spaceplus or Infusomat® fmS pump, aligning the printing pattern and pump clips according to the pump user manual to ensure correct loading.
  • Connect the patient end (Luer-lock connector) to the patient’s IV access device (e.g. cannula) using aseptic technique.
  • Program the infusion pump with the prescribed rate and volume, and start the infusion following the pump’s instructions for use. When used by gravity, adjust flow rate manually using the roller clamp and monitor using the drip chamber calibration (20 drops/ml).
  • Regularly monitor the infusion site, tubing, drip chamber and pump status throughout therapy, checking for kinks, disconnections, air bubbles or occlusions.
  • Do not exceed the recommended maximum continuous usage time of 96 hours in the pump; replace the set in accordance with hospital policy and manufacturer recommendations.
  • After completion of infusion or when the set is no longer needed, stop the pump, clamp the line, disconnect from the patient and container, and dispose of the entire set (including spike protector and line holder) as clinical waste according to local protocols.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if the sterile barrier is damaged, packaging is opened or compromised prior to use.
  • Do not use for administration of solutions that are incompatible with PVC or silicone, or that require specialised tubing or filters not provided with this set (e.g. certain chemotherapy, blood products or lipid emulsions unless specifically indicated by manufacturer).
  • Do not use with non-compatible infusion pumps; the set is specifically designed for B. Braun Infusomat® Space®, Infusomat® Spaceplus and Infusomat® fmS.
  • Not intended for reuse or resterilisation; reuse may lead to infection, pyrogenic reactions or device malfunction.
  • Do not use if the tubing, connectors, filter or drip chamber appear damaged, discoloured or occluded.
  • Use with caution and according to institutional policies when administering hazardous drugs; additional protective equipment or dedicated lines may be required.

Adverse Effects

  • The administration set itself does not have pharmacological effects; potential adverse events are related to IV therapy in general, such as infection, phlebitis, infiltration, extravasation or air embolism if not used correctly.
  • Use of a damaged or improperly primed set can lead to air entry into the line or inaccurate flow, potentially compromising patient safety.
  • Incorrect pump loading or failure of free-flow protection could theoretically result in unintended rapid infusion if the system is not checked and used according to instructions.
  • Particulate contamination risk is reduced by the integrated 15 µm filter, but inappropriate use or bypassing of the filter may increase the risk of particulate infusion.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a clean, dry place in its original packaging, protected from direct sunlight and excessive moisture.
  • Observe the storage temperature range indicated on the packaging (typically room temperature); avoid extreme heat or cold.
  • Do not freeze and do not expose cartons to crushing or mechanical damage that could compromise the sterile barrier.
  • Keep out of reach of children and unauthorised persons.
  • Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Duration

The administration set is intended for single use during one continuous infusion course and may be used in the pump for up to 96 hours, in line with B. Braun guidance and local infection-control policies. The clinical duration of therapy depends on the prescribed infusion and is determined by the treating clinician.

Onset

Immediate, as the set serves as a conduit for intravenous infusion; once correctly primed and connected, fluid delivery begins as soon as the pump or gravity flow is started.
