Non-sterile gauze / non-woven swabs
Description
J&J Topper U/S Gauze Swabs 7.5 x 7.5cm 6PLY are non-sterile wound care swabs supplied in packs of 100. Each swab measures 7.5cm x 7.5cm and is constructed in 6-ply format to provide soft, highly absorbent cushioning for general wound care. Part of the Johnson & Johnson Topper range, these swabs are typically made from a unique non-woven rayon/polyester material that offers improved absorbency, strength and low linting compared with traditional woven gauze, making them suitable for wound cleansing, absorption of exudate, skin preparation and general clinical procedures. They are intended for external use only and must not be used as an implant or left in body cavities.
Bnefits
- Non-sterile, multi-purpose swabs suitable for a wide range of wound care and general clinical applications.
- 6-ply construction provides good absorbency and cushioning for exudate management and gentle cleansing.
- 7.5cm x 7.5cm size is versatile for small to medium wound areas and general use.
- Topper non-woven technology (rayon/polyester) offers enhanced absorbency, strength and scrubbing texture versus traditional woven gauze.
- Low-lint design helps minimise fibre shedding into wounds compared with standard woven gauze.
- Supplied as a bulk pack of 100 swabs for cost-effective, routine clinical use.
- Suitable for use in hospitals, clinics, GP surgeries, dental and aesthetic practices (e.g. injection site preparation, post-procedure cleansing).
- Compatible with common topical antiseptics and cleansing solutions used in wound and procedural care.
Indications
- General wound cleansing and absorption of exudate.
- Post-operative dressing changes (as a secondary dressing or absorbent pad).
- Skin cleansing and preparation prior to minor procedures, injections or infusions.
- Application or removal of topical antiseptics and solutions.
- General clinical and treatment room use where a non-sterile, absorbent swab is appropriate.
- Use in aesthetic and dermatology clinics for cleansing injection sites, managing small amounts of blood or exudate and general skin preparation.
Composition
- Non-woven rayon/polyester blend (as per Johnson & Johnson Topper swabs range).
- 6-ply construction for improved bulk and absorbency.
- Bleached and processed for medical use, low-linting design.
- Latex-free (no natural rubber latex in the swab material itself, according to typical Topper product information from Johnson & Johnson/Systagenix).
Formulation
- Non-sterile, soft, non-woven swab / sponge.
- Rayon/polyester non-woven web formed into 6-ply pads.
- Designed for single-use only.
- Supplied clean but not sterile; must not be used where sterile product is required unless sterilised in accordance with appropriate protocols (usually not recommended for end-users).
Packaging
- Pack of 100 non-sterile swabs.
- Each swab size: 7.5cm x 7.5cm.
- 6-ply thickness.
- Typically supplied in a clear or printed plastic pack inside an outer carton bearing Johnson & Johnson branding and product details.
- Packaging clearly marked as non-sterile and single-use.
Usage
- Inspect packaging and contents before use; do not use if the pack is visibly damaged or contaminated.
- Select the required number of swabs with clean or gloved hands, following local infection-prevention policies.
- Use swabs to cleanse the wound or skin with appropriate cleansing solution or antiseptic as per clinical protocol.
- Use as an absorbent pad to manage light to moderate wound exudate, typically as part of a layered dressing system.
- Dispose of used swabs as clinical waste according to local regulations and facility guidelines; do not re-use.
- For procedures where sterility is required, use an appropriate sterile swab product instead of these non-sterile swabs.
- Do not insert into body cavities or use as an internal packing material unless an appropriate radiopaque, indication-approved product is used in line with manufacturer guidance.
Contraindications
- Do not use on patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to rayon, polyester or any component of the swab material.
- Not suitable as a primary dressing for heavily bleeding wounds where specialised haemostatic dressings are indicated.
- Not indicated for use inside body cavities or as a surgical sponge/implantable material.
- Non-sterile product; do not use in situations where a sterile device is required (e.g. in open surgical fields) unless sterilised by an appropriate, validated process at facility level.
- Use with caution on very fragile or compromised skin where aggressive rubbing could cause trauma; gentle technique should be used.
Adverse Effects
- Mechanical irritation or friction trauma if swabs are used with excessive rubbing or on very delicate skin.
- Rare risk of contact sensitivity or allergic reaction in individuals sensitive to rayon/polyester or processing residues.
- If fibres are shed into a wound, there is a theoretical risk of foreign body reaction or delayed healing, although design aims to minimise linting.
- Improper use of non-sterile swabs in settings requiring sterility may increase risk of infection.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a clean, dry environment at room temperature.
- Protect from moisture, direct sunlight and excessive heat.
- Keep in original packaging until use to minimise contamination.
- Do not use if packaging is torn, wet or visibly contaminated.
- Keep out of reach of children and non-clinical personnel.
Duration
Single-use product; duration of use is limited to the dressing or procedure session during which the swab is applied. Swabs should be replaced at each dressing change or as soon as they become saturated or soiled, according to clinical judgement and local wound care protocols.
Onset
Provides immediate absorbency and cleansing action upon application to the wound or skin surface; there is no pharmacological onset of effect as this is a passive, non-medicated device.
