Latex-free single-use venipuncture tourniquet
Description
The BD Vacutainer Stretch Latex-Free Single-Use Tourniquet (box of 25) is a disposable, latex-free tourniquet designed for safe and efficient venipuncture and IV access. Made from a soft, thermoplastic elastomer material, it provides reliable stretch, elasticity and patient comfort while eliminating the risk of natural rubber latex–induced allergic reactions in sensitive patients and staff. The tourniquets are supplied in a compact dispenser box with a perforated design that allows easy, one-at-a-time dispensing and supports a single-use policy to help reduce cross-contamination between patients and healthcare workers.
Bnefits
- Latex-free construction helps prevent latex-induced allergic reactions in latex-sensitive patients and healthcare workers.
- Single-use design supports infection-prevention protocols by reducing the risk of cross-contamination between patients.
- Soft, stretchable material provides reliable elasticity and patient comfort during venipuncture and IV procedures.
- Perforated strip and dispenser box enable easy, one-at-a-time dispensing, encouraging consistent single-use practice.
- Compact packaging fits conveniently on phlebotomy trays or in treatment rooms, saving space and improving workflow.
- Textured, thermoplastic elastomer surface provides improved grip for practitioners when tightening and releasing the tourniquet.
- Scent-free material helps maintain patient comfort, particularly in enclosed clinical environments.
- Recognised BD Vacutainer brand for venous blood collection, compatible with standard phlebotomy workflows in hospitals, GP surgeries and aesthetic clinics.
Indications
- Temporary venous constriction during venipuncture for blood sampling.
- Facilitating vein location and cannulation for peripheral IV access.
- Use in phlebotomy, infusion therapy and outpatient blood-draw settings.
- Suitable for use in hospitals, clinics, GP practices, diagnostic laboratories and aesthetic clinics performing blood draws (e.g., PRP or lab work).
Composition
- Latex-free thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) band.
- Scent-free formulation (no added fragrances).
- Does not contain natural rubber latex.
Formulation
- Single-use, non-sterile, latex-free stretch tourniquet strip.
- Thermoplastic elastomer band designed to stretch and return to shape for consistent tension.
- Perforated at regular intervals to allow separation of individual tourniquets from the roll.
- Typically supplied as flat strips approximately 2.5 cm wide and about 43–45 cm long, suitable for adult limb circumference (exact dimensions may vary slightly by lot).
Packaging
- Box of 25 single-use latex-free stretch tourniquets.
- Perforated continuous band stored within a compact cardboard dispenser box.
- Dispenser slot allows easy one-at-a-time withdrawal and tearing of individual tourniquets along perforations.
- Outer box clearly labelled with BD Vacutainer branding, product description, latex-free designation, quantity (25) and reference number (e.g., 367204).
Usage
- Remove one tourniquet from the dispenser box, pulling along the perforations to separate a single strip.
- Inspect the tourniquet before use; do not use if the strip is torn, excessively stretched or damaged.
- Apply the tourniquet 7–10 cm above the intended venipuncture or cannulation site, wrapping it around the limb and securing with a simple knot or tuck to achieve adequate venous engorgement without compromising arterial flow.
- Confirm that a distal pulse remains palpable and that the patient is not experiencing undue discomfort.
- Perform venipuncture or IV cannulation according to institutional protocols.
- Release the tourniquet as soon as blood flow is established or cannulation is complete, taking care not to leave it in place longer than necessary.
- Dispose of the used tourniquet immediately as clinical waste in accordance with local infection-prevention and waste-disposal policies; do not reuse.
- Store the dispenser box in a clean, dry area close to the phlebotomy or treatment station for easy access.
- Follow any additional instructions for use provided on the BD packaging or product literature.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity or allergy to components of the thermoplastic elastomer material (non-latex) used in the tourniquet.
- Do not apply over areas of broken skin, open wounds, infection or severe dermatological conditions.
- Use with caution or avoid prolonged application in patients with severe peripheral vascular disease, fragile veins, lymphedema or compromised circulation in the limb.
- Do not leave the tourniquet in place for extended periods; prolonged occlusion may increase risk of haemoconcentration, nerve injury or circulatory compromise.
- Not intended for use as a device for bleeding control in trauma or as a prolonged arterial tourniquet.
Adverse Effects
- Transient discomfort or pain at the application site if the tourniquet is applied too tightly.
- Localised skin indentation or temporary marks following removal.
- Potential for bruising or petechiae if veins are fragile or if tourniquet pressure/time is excessive.
- Rare risk of nerve irritation or circulatory compromise if applied with excessive tension or for too long.
- Very rare allergic or sensitivity reactions to non-latex synthetic material in susceptible individuals.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
- Keep in the original dispenser box until use to protect from dust and contamination.
- Avoid exposure to oils, solvents or chemicals that may degrade the thermoplastic elastomer.
- Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
- Keep out of reach of children and unauthorised persons in clinical areas.
Duration
Not applicable \u2013 this is a temporary mechanical aid applied only for the duration of venipuncture or cannulation and then discarded.
Onset
Immediate venous constriction and vein engorgement upon appropriate tightening and application of the tourniquet.
