Alcohol surface disinfectant wipes for non-invasive medical devices

Description

Medipal Alcohol Wipes (Tube of 200 wipes, 195mm x 190mm) are high-level surface disinfectant wipes designed for rapid cleaning and disinfection of hard, non-porous surfaces and non-invasive medical devices within healthcare and care environments. Each wipe is made from Medipal’s proprietary Tritex non-woven material and impregnated with a 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution in purified water, providing fast, broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. The ultra-low linting, high-strength wipe material ensures even wetness and efficient release of the active solution for optimum disinfection performance, while leaving no visible residue on compatible surfaces. The product is classified as a Class IIa medical device and has been independently tested to a wide range of European EN standards, including EN16615, EN1276, EN13727, EN14561, EN13697, EN14348, EN14563, EN1650, EN13624 and EN14476, demonstrating bactericidal (including TB), virucidal, yeasticidal and fungicidal efficacy.

Bnefits

  • Provides rapid, high-level disinfection of non-porous hard surfaces and non-invasive medical devices using 70% isopropyl alcohol.
  • Broad-spectrum efficacy, independently tested to multiple European EN standards (e.g. EN1276, EN13727, EN14561, EN13697, EN16615, EN14348, EN14563, EN1650, EN13624, EN14476) for bactericidal, mycobactericidal, yeasticidal, fungicidal and virucidal performance.
  • Tritex non-woven material offers high strength in both directions (across and along the wipe), helping to prevent tearing during use.
  • Ultra-low linting substrate minimises fibre shedding and risk of leaving contaminating fibres on disinfected surfaces.
  • Excellent solution retention in the wipe ensures consistent wetness across the entire canister and throughout each wipe.
  • Efficient solution release transfers active ingredients to the surface rather than trapping them in the wipe fibres, supporting reliable contact with pathogens.
  • Fast drying formulation leaves no visible residue on glass or stainless steel surfaces, helping maintain a clean visual finish.
  • Convenient tub presentation allows easy storage on trolleys, counters or wall-mounted brackets, with simple access for busy clinical environments.
  • Designed for use where there is a high risk of infection and trusted by infection prevention teams in healthcare settings.

Indications

  • Rapid cleaning and disinfection of non-porous hard surfaces in healthcare and care environments (e.g. worktops, trolley tops, counters, door handles, bed frames, bedside cabinets) that are not sensitive to alcohol.
  • Disinfection of non-invasive, non-alcohol-sensitive medical devices and equipment surfaces (e.g. monitors, stands, external surfaces of equipment) in hospitals, clinics, dental practices, GP surgeries, and aesthetic/dermatology treatment rooms.
  • Use in areas where a high level of infection risk is present and rapid turnaround of clean, disinfected surfaces is required.
  • General infection prevention and control protocols requiring IPA-based wipes with validated EN-standard efficacy.
  • Suitable for professional users only, in line with manufacturer and SDS labelling.

Composition

  • Propan-2-ol (isopropyl alcohol) ~70% (w/w or v/v as specified on local labelling)
  • Purified water (q.s. to 100%)
  • Tritex® non-woven wipe substrate (multi-layer spunbond and meltblown polypropylene with hydrophilic coating, 100% synthetic)
  • Impregnated liquid is colourless, with characteristic alcohol odour; pH of solution approx. 6.5–7.5

Formulation

  • Liquid-impregnated non-woven wipe (Tritex® technology) supplied in a sealed HDPE tub.
  • Active disinfectant solution based on 70% isopropyl alcohol in purified water for rapid broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity.
  • Wipe grade typically 18 gsm Tritex non-woven polypropylene, engineered to provide high tensile strength, ultra-low linting, excellent solution retention, and efficient release of active solution.
  • Fast-drying, residue-free formulation suitable for glass and stainless steel surfaces when used as directed.
  • PHMB-free and quaternary ammonium compound (quat)-free alcohol disinfectant system, as described in manufacturer literature for Medipal Alcohol Wipes.
  • Class IIa medical device under EU/UK medical device rules, intended for professional use on non-invasive medical devices and hard surfaces.

Packaging

  • Red HDPE canister/tub containing 200 pre-saturated wipes.
  • Approximate wipe size: 195mm x 190mm (large format).
  • Tritex non-woven material wound on a centre-roll within the tub, dispensed through a resealable dispensing cap to minimise drying.
  • Outer case: typically 10 tubs per case for bulk supply, as detailed in manufacturer literature (200-wipe canister, Product Code W600110MPCE/W600110CE).
  • Designed to be stored on trolleys, countertops or in compatible wall-mounted brackets for convenient access in clinical settings.

Usage

  • Ensure hands are clean and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn according to local risk assessment and infection control policy.
  • Open the tub lid and pull the first wipe through the dispensing aperture; close the lid securely between uses to prevent wipes from drying out.
  • If the surface is visibly soiled, use wipes to remove gross contamination first; more than one wipe may be required to ensure the surface is physically clean before final disinfection.
  • Lay the wipe flat on the surface rather than scrunching or folding, to maximise contact area and minimise hand contact with the surface.
  • Wipe using an S-shaped motion, working from the cleanest area towards the dirtiest area and avoiding overlap of already-wiped areas with the same wipe.
  • Ensure the entire target surface is thoroughly wiped and remains visibly wet for the full, required contact time specified by local protocols and relevant EN-standard efficacy data (typically around 30 seconds to 5 minutes depending on the microorganism).
  • Use additional wipes if the surface dries before the required contact time has elapsed, or if the wipe becomes visibly soiled or dry.
  • Allow the surface to air dry completely; do not manually dry the surface as this may reduce disinfection efficacy.
  • Dispose of used wipes in the appropriate clinical or domestic waste stream in accordance with local guidelines. Do not flush wipes down toilets.
  • Close the tub lid firmly after use to maintain wipe moisture. Replace tub if wipes become dry or contaminated.
  • Follow local infection control policies and device manufacturer guidance regarding compatibility with alcohol-based disinfectants.

Contraindications

  • Not for use on invasive medical devices or instruments that penetrate the skin or enter sterile body cavities.
  • Not intended for direct application to large areas of human skin as a primary skin antiseptic (these are surface and non-invasive device wipes).
  • Avoid use on alcohol-sensitive materials and surfaces (e.g. certain plastics, acrylic screens, lacquered or painted surfaces, some rubber components) unless compatibility has been confirmed.
  • Do not use on surfaces or devices designated as alcohol-free only by the manufacturer.
  • Should not be used on electrical equipment where liquid ingress may pose a safety risk, unless specifically approved and used with care according to device manufacturer guidelines.
  • Contraindicated in situations where flammable vapours present a major hazard (e.g. near open flames, sparks, very hot surfaces).
  • Individuals with known hypersensitivity to isopropyl alcohol should avoid prolonged direct contact with the wetted wipe or vapours.
  • Use restricted to professional or trained users as noted in the SDS and technical data.

Adverse Effects

  • Repeated or prolonged skin contact with the impregnated liquid may cause dryness, redness and irritation (EUH066: repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking).
  • Eye contact with solution can cause serious eye irritation, redness and pain (H319).
  • Inhalation of high concentrations of vapour (especially in poorly ventilated areas) may cause headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea and drowsiness or other central nervous system effects (H336: may cause drowsiness or dizziness).
  • Ingestion of the solution can cause nausea and vomiting and requires medical attention.
  • Flammable: vapours may form explosive mixtures with air; inappropriate storage or use near ignition sources can present a fire hazard (H225: highly flammable liquid and vapour).
  • Allergic or idiosyncratic reactions to isopropyl alcohol are rare but possible; discontinue exposure and seek medical advice if significant irritation or systemic symptoms occur.
  • Misuse (e.g. using wipes on inappropriate surfaces, insufficient ventilation, or mixing with other chemicals) may increase the risk of irritation or damage to materials.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in the original, tightly closed tub in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place.
  • Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other sources of ignition. No smoking near stored product.
  • Do not store together with strong oxidising agents or self-igniting products.
  • Recommended storage temperature approximately -10°C to +40°C, as indicated in the safety data sheet.
  • Keep container closed when not in use to prevent evaporation of alcohol and drying of wipes.
  • Store out of reach of children and unauthorised persons.
  • Do not puncture or incinerate the tub; dispose of empty packaging according to local regulations after thorough emptying.
  • Protect from direct sunlight and extremes of temperature during transport and storage.

Duration

Single-use, as-needed surface disinfection product. Each application involves wiping the surface and leaving it wet for the required contact time (often 30 seconds to 5 minutes depending on the target organism and EN test conditions). There is no fixed overall treatment course; use frequency is determined by local infection control protocols and environmental cleaning schedules.

Onset

Rapid action; antimicrobial activity begins immediately upon application to the surface. EN-standard testing demonstrates effective kill within contact times as short as 30 seconds for many bacteria and fungi, and typically within 1\u20135 minutes for mycobacteria and enveloped viruses when the surface remains visibly wet for the specified duration.
