Pressure-activated single-use safety lancets

Description

Microdot Sure Safety Lancets - 23G / 1.8mm are sterile, single-use, pressure-activated safety lancets designed for capillary blood sampling in professional and community healthcare settings. Each lancet incorporates a smooth, auto-polished, tri-bevel stainless-steel needle (23 gauge) with a fixed penetration depth of 1.8 mm, engineered to provide an adequate capillary blood sample while maintaining patient comfort. The needle is fully enclosed before use and, after activation against the skin, automatically retracts and locks out inside the plastic housing to reduce the risk of needlestick injuries, cross infection and reuse. Supplied as a box of 200 individually sterile lancets under code GLU-204, Microdot Sure Safety Lancets form part of the wider Microdot safety lancet range used across NHS and private healthcare services.

Bnefits

  • 23G smooth, auto-polished, tri-bevel needle designed to balance sample volume with patient comfort.
  • Fixed 1.8 mm penetration depth suitable for routine adult capillary blood sampling when a moderate blood drop is required.
  • Pressure-activated mechanism that is simple to use and delivers consistent puncture depth without a separate trigger button.
  • Single-use retractable safety lock-out feature helps prevent accidental needle sticks and eliminates the possibility of reuse.
  • Needle remains fully shielded before and after use, supporting effective sharps safety and infection control.
  • Cost-effective safety lancet that can help reduce wastage and device-related costs for NHS and private medical providers.
  • Packaging and Instructions for Use supplied in English, Spanish, French and German to support multilingual clinical environments.
  • Designed to comply with EU Sharps Directive 2010/32/EU for safer sharps in healthcare settings.

Indications

  • Capillary blood sampling for blood glucose monitoring in people with diabetes.
  • Capillary blood sampling for other point-of-care diagnostics (e.g. certain HbA1c, lipid or rapid tests) where a 23G / 1.8 mm lancet is suitable.
  • Use in hospitals, GP practices, community clinics, pharmacies and screening settings where safety-engineered lancets are required.
  • Professional use in circumstances where safe, single-use sharps are preferred to minimise needlestick injury and cross infection risks.

Composition

  • Needle: medical-grade stainless steel, 23 gauge.
  • Needle tip: precision ground, auto-polished tri-bevel tip for smoother skin penetration.
  • Penetration depth: fixed 1.8 mm.
  • Needle coating: typically silicone-coated to reduce penetration force and enhance comfort (per Microdot safety lancet range specification).
  • Housing: moulded plastic body fully enclosing the needle before and after use.
  • Internal mechanism: spring-driven, pressure-activated firing system with automatic needle retraction and permanent lock-out after activation.
  • Device properties: sterile, single-use, non-reusable safety lancet, generally latex-free and non-pyrogenic.

Formulation

  • Medical device only – contains no medicinal product or active pharmaceutical ingredient.
  • Pre-assembled, ready-to-use pressure-activated safety lancet.
  • Designed specifically for capillary blood sampling from fingertip or other approved capillary sites in line with local protocols.

Packaging

  • Outer carton containing 200 Microdot Sure Safety Lancets (23G / 1.8mm).
  • Each lancet individually sterile-packed to maintain sterility until point of use.
  • Carton printed with product name (Microdot Sure Safety Lancets - 23G / 1.8mm - Box of 200), brand (Microdot), quantity (200), SKU/ordering code (GLU-204) and regulatory symbols including CE mark.
  • Supplied in a format suitable for clinical stockrooms, ward use and professional dispensing.

Usage

  • Confirm that the outer carton and individual sterile packaging are intact and that the product is within its expiry date.
  • Prepare the sampling site according to local infection control policy (e.g. wash and dry hands or clean site with appropriate antiseptic and allow to dry).
  • Remove one lancet from its sterile pack immediately before use.
  • Twist off the protective cap from the tip of the lancet; the needle remains enclosed within the housing.
  • Place the flat end of the lancet firmly against the side of the fingertip or other approved sampling site.
  • Apply firm pressure until the device activates; the pressure-activated mechanism will deploy and retract the needle automatically, producing a controlled puncture.
  • Allow a suitable blood drop to form and collect it according to the instructions for the test strip or point-of-care device being used.
  • Dispose of the used lancet immediately in an approved sharps container; do not attempt to recap, dismantle or reuse.
  • Use only by, or under the guidance of, trained healthcare professionals or appropriately trained personnel, in accordance with local policies on capillary blood sampling and sharps handling.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if the individual sterile pack is damaged, opened or shows signs of contamination.
  • Not intended for venous or arterial blood sampling; for capillary blood sampling only.
  • Do not reuse; reuse increases the risk of infection, pain, tissue damage, and inaccurate sampling.
  • Use with caution or consider alternative sampling methods in patients with known hypersensitivity to stainless steel or silicone.
  • Follow local clinical guidance when lancing patients with bleeding disorders, on anticoagulant therapy, or with significantly impaired peripheral circulation.
  • Do not use on sites with active infection, significant inflammation, burns, or compromised skin integrity.

Adverse Effects

  • Mild, transient pain or stinging at the puncture site.
  • Localised redness, minor bruising or small haematoma at the sampling site.
  • Rare risk of local infection if aseptic technique and aftercare are inadequate.
  • With repeated sampling from the same area, local skin thickening or callus formation may occur over time.
  • Occasional vasovagal responses (such as dizziness or faintness) associated with blood sampling in susceptible individuals.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a clean, dry environment at normal room temperature.
  • Protect from excessive heat, moisture and direct sunlight.
  • Keep in the original outer carton until use to protect individual sterile packs and preserve labelling.
  • Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
  • Keep out of reach of children and unauthorised users.

Duration

Single-use per lancet; each lancet is used once to obtain an immediate capillary blood sample.

Onset

Immediate blood sample obtained at the time of activation.
