Open Suction Catheter
Description
The Open Suction Catheter, Graduated, 8ch x 48cm, Two Side Eyes - Box of 100 is a Pennine Healthcare Oppo-Cath suction catheter designed for oral, tracheal and endobronchial suction procedures. It is a sterile, single-use, medical grade PVC catheter with a clear Prestrol vacuum-control connector, 1 cm graduations along the 48 cm tube, a terminal distal opening and two small opposed side eyes (Oppo eyes) to reduce tissue trauma. The catheter is colour-coded for size identification (8ch, approx. 2.7 mm diameter) and supplied individually wrapped in peel pouches, with 100 catheters per box.
Bnefits
- Designed specifically for oral, tracheal and endobronchial suction procedures to maintain airway patency.
- Medical grade PVC construction provides flexibility, kink resistance and atraumatic insertion characteristics.
- Clear Prestrol vacuum-control connector allows fingertip suction control for safer, more controlled suctioning.
- Graduations every 1 cm along the 48 cm tube assist with accurate depth placement and documentation.
- Terminal distal eye with two small opposed side eyes (Oppo eyes) helps reduce mucosal trauma and improves suction efficiency.
- Colour-coded connector facilitates rapid identification of catheter size (8ch) in clinical settings.
- Sterile, single-use, individually peel-packed catheters support infection prevention and reduce cross-contamination risk.
- Compatible with standard suction tubing and suction sources commonly used in ward, theatre, ICU and emergency settings.
Indications
- Oral, tracheal and endobronchial suction procedures to remove respiratory secretions.
- Airway clearance in intubated or tracheostomised patients in intensive care, theatre, emergency or ward environments.
- Maintenance of airway patency in patients unable to clear their own secretions effectively.
- Use during anaesthesia and post-operative care to remove blood, mucus or other fluids from the airway.
- General respiratory suctioning where an 8ch (2.7 mm) catheter is clinically appropriate for patient size and airway device.
Composition
- Tube: medical grade PVC suction catheter, 48 cm length.
- Connector: clear Prestrol vacuum-control funnel connector with colour coding for size identification.
- Distal configuration: terminal distal eye plus two small opposed side eyes (Oppo eyes) at approximately 180° orientation.
- Size: 8ch (French), approximate outer diameter 2.7 mm.
Formulation
- Single-use sterile medical device – PVC suction catheter with Prestrol vacuum-control connector and two opposed side eyes, graduated every 1 cm along the tube.
Packaging
- Each catheter is supplied sterile in an individual peel pouch.
- Box of 100 catheters (inner box) with product code OSC-1208/48 and size/length clearly marked.
- Outer carton suitable for storage in clinical supply areas.
Usage
- Use only by trained healthcare professionals familiar with suctioning techniques and airway management.
- Select the appropriate catheter size (8ch) based on patient size, airway device and clinical requirements.
- Open the sterile peel pouch using aseptic technique and connect the Prestrol vacuum-control connector to compatible suction tubing and suction source.
- If required, pre-measure the insertion depth using the 1 cm graduations on the catheter to avoid advancing too deeply into the airway.
- Gently insert the catheter into the patient’s mouth, tracheal tube or tracheostomy tube without applying suction, advancing to the predetermined depth.
- Apply suction by occluding the vacuum-control port on the Prestrol connector with a gloved finger while slowly withdrawing or intermittently advancing and withdrawing the catheter, following local protocol.
- Limit suction time per pass (commonly 10–15 seconds or less) and allow the patient to rest and re-oxygenate between passes, in accordance with local guidelines.
- Monitor the patient’s oxygen saturation, heart rate and overall clinical status throughout the procedure.
- After use, disconnect the catheter and dispose of it immediately as clinical waste in accordance with local infection prevention and control policies; do not reuse.
- Do not use if the sterile packaging is opened, damaged or contaminated, or if the catheter shows signs of damage or manufacturing defect.
Contraindications
- Relative contraindication in patients with significant coagulopathy or thrombocytopenia due to increased risk of mucosal bleeding, unless clearly indicated and performed with caution.
- Use with caution in patients with raised intracranial pressure, unstable cardiovascular status or severe hypoxia, where suctioning may exacerbate clinical instability.
- Do not use where the required catheter size differs from 8ch; select an appropriate size based on patient and airway characteristics.
- Do not reuse; single-use device only. Reuse may increase risk of infection, loss of performance and patient harm.
- Do not use if catheter or packaging appears damaged, contaminated or past expiry date.
Adverse Effects
- Local mucosal irritation or trauma, including minor bleeding, due to mechanical contact with airway tissues.
- Transient coughing, gagging or discomfort during suction catheter insertion and suctioning.
- Potential for hypoxia, bronchospasm, arrhythmias or hemodynamic instability if suctioning is prolonged, too frequent or performed without adequate oxygenation and monitoring.
- Rare risk of airway damage if the catheter is inserted too forcefully or beyond safe depth.
- Infection risk if aseptic technique is not followed or if catheters are reused contrary to instructions.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a clean, dry environment away from direct sunlight and excessive heat or humidity.
- Keep in original packaging until point of use to maintain sterility and protect from physical damage.
- Observe any temperature and storage recommendations given on the manufacturer’s packaging (typically ambient room temperature).
- Do not use after the expiry date printed on the box or individual pouch.
- Avoid compressing or sharply bending boxes to prevent deformation of the catheters and packaging.
Duration
Used for short, intermittent suctioning episodes; each catheter is intended for a single suction procedure and should be discarded immediately after use.
Onset
Immediate removal of secretions during suctioning, with rapid improvement in airway clearance when the catheter is used correctly.
