High-Level Instrument Sterilant
Description
Perasafe Sterilising Solution is a fast-acting, aldehyde-free, biodegradable high-level sterilant designed for reprocessing reusable medical devices. Supplied as an 81g powdered concentrate in a resealable container, it is mixed with water to produce 5 litres of active sterilising solution. Perasafe provides broad-spectrum activity, including sporicidal, virucidal, bactericidal and fungicidal efficacy, making it suitable for sterilising heat-sensitive medical instruments. This listing reflects clearance stock with shortened expiry (07/2025).
Bnefits
- Provides high-level disinfection and sterilisation for reusable medical instruments.
- Fast-acting antimicrobial activity, including sporicidal, bactericidal, virucidal and fungicidal effects.
- Aldehyde-free formulation reduces risks associated with formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde exposure.
- Biodegradable powder that is safer for staff and the environment compared to aldehyde-based solutions.
- Convenient powdered format mixes to produce 5 litres of ready-to-use sterilising solution.
- Suitable for heat-sensitive devices and areas where steam sterilisation is impractical.
- Consistent, validated performance widely used across hospitals, clinics and dental practices.
Indications
- High-level sterilisation and disinfection of reusable medical devices and instruments.
- Suitable for heat-sensitive or thermolabile instruments requiring manual cold sterilisation.
- Appropriate for use in hospital, dental, surgical, emergency care, outpatient and clinical environments.
- Used when sporicidal activity is required, such as for instruments exposed to bloodborne pathogens or spore-forming organisms.
Composition
- Peroxygen-based powdered sterilant (typically peracetic-acid generating compound when dissolved).
- Activators and stabilisers to generate antimicrobial peroxygen species upon reconstitution.
- Aldehyde-free and biodegradable formulation.
- Exact proprietary formulation varies by manufacturer specification and regulatory region.
Formulation
- Powdered peroxygen-based sterilant supplied in an 81g container.
- Mixes with water to generate 5 litres of active sterilising solution.
- Solution remains active for a defined in-use period (refer to manufacturer’s IFU).
Packaging
- One 81g resealable container of Perasafe sterile powder.
- Packaged with clear instructions for dilution to produce 5L of sterilising solution.
- Outer product labelling includes batch number, expiry date (clearance batch 07/2025), and safety warnings.
- Supplied by Medisave as a CLEARANCE short-dated item.
Usage
- Wear appropriate PPE (gloves, eye protection, apron) when handling powdered sterilant.
- Dissolve the 81g powder in 5 litres of clean water as per manufacturer instructions to activate the solution.
- Mix until the powder is fully dissolved and solution is clear.
- Fully immerse cleaned, pre-washed medical instruments into the solution ensuring all surfaces are covered.
- Allow contact time according to the intended level of disinfection or sterilisation (follow IFU).
- After treatment, rinse instruments thoroughly with sterile or high-quality water to remove residual chemicals.
- Discard solution after its validated in-use period or if visibly contaminated.
- Store powder container tightly closed between uses and avoid moisture ingress.
Contraindications
- Do not use on instruments incompatible with peroxygen/peracetic-acid type sterilants.
- Not suitable for items that could be damaged by oxidative chemistry (check device IFU).
- Avoid contact with textiles, anodised surfaces or metals that may corrode with oxidising agents.
- Do not mix with other disinfectants or chemicals.
Adverse Effects
- May cause skin, eye or respiratory irritation if handled without PPE.
- Inhalation of powder may cause irritation to mucous membranes.
- Prolonged contact with solution may cause corrosion on incompatible metals.
- Accidental spills can bleach or damage surfaces.
Storage Conditions
- Store powder in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight.
- Keep container tightly sealed when not in use.
- Avoid high humidity to prevent premature activation of powder.
- Keep out of reach of children and unauthorised personnel.
Duration
Onset
Antimicrobial activity begins immediately upon proper reconstitution, with full sporicidal activity achieved within the validated contact time.
