Gauze Swabs / X-Ray Detectable Swabs
Description
Sterile Rocialle XRD gauze swabs are 10 x 7.5cm, 32-ply, 100% cotton gauze swabs incorporating an X-ray detectable (XRD) barium sulphate thread. They are supplied tied in packs of five swabs, double wrapped for sterile presentation. Designed as single-use, latex-free, highly absorbent surgical swabs for use in operating theatres and wound care where intra-operative swab counting and radiographic detectability are required.
Bnefits
- 10 x 7.5cm 32-ply construction provides high absorbency for blood and wound exudate.
- Incorporated X-ray detectable thread helps enable radiographic identification of retained swabs.
- XRD thread contains barium sulphate to provide strong radio-opacity on X-ray imaging.
- 100% cotton gauze for softness, strength and fluid handling.
- Manufactured to BP/EN 14079 standard for surgical gauze swabs.
- Low-linting design helps minimise fibre shedding and foreign body contamination.
- Double-wrapped sterile packs support aseptic presentation in theatre.
- Latex-free materials reduce the risk of latex-related hypersensitivity reactions.
- Single-use, sterile product reduces cross-contamination risk compared with reusable materials.
- Suitable for use in swab-counting protocols during surgical procedures.
Indications
- Absorption of blood and body fluids during surgical and invasive procedures.
- Packing and protection of surgical and traumatic wounds and/or cavities during procedures.
- Use in operating theatres where X-ray detectable swabs are required as part of retained-surgical-item prevention protocols.
- General wound care in hospital and theatre settings where a sterile, highly absorbent gauze swab is required.
- Situations where accurate swab counting and the ability to detect retained swabs radiographically are required.
Composition
- 100% cotton gauze.
- X-ray detectable thread containing a minimum proportion of barium sulphate (radio-opaque).
- Latex-free materials.
Formulation
- Sterile Raytec-type X-ray detectable gauze swabs.
- 32-ply cotton gauze, size 10cm x 7.5cm.
- Tied in packs of 5 swabs.
- Double wrapped for sterile presentation.
- White colour gauze with XRD thread.
Packaging
- Immediate packaging: 5 swabs tied together and double wrapped in sterile packaging (pack of 5).
- Retail/clinic unit: single sterile pack of 5 XRD swabs (Medisave/Acana SKU RML122-101/SINGLE).
- Bulk supply example: boxes/cases containing multiple packs of 5 swabs (e.g. 100 swabs per case = 20 inner packs of 5; product code RML122-101 as listed by distributors).
- Manufacturer case quantities for 7.5cm x 10cm XRD swabs are listed as large case packs for hospital supply.
Usage
- Check the sterile pack for integrity and expiry date before use; do not use if packaging is damaged or opened.
- Open the outer and inner wrap aseptically to maintain sterility of the swabs.
- Count swabs in accordance with local swab-counting procedures before use.
- Apply swabs to the surgical field or wound to absorb blood and exudate or to pack cavities as directed by the clinician.
- Ensure the X-ray detectable thread remains intact and is not removed or cut from the swab.
- Maintain an accurate running count of all XRD swabs used during the procedure.
- At the end of the procedure, confirm that the number of swabs accounted for matches the pre- and intra-operative counts; if a discrepancy is suspected, follow local policy which may include radiographic imaging.
- Dispose of used swabs as clinical/infectious waste in line with local protocols.
- Do not reuse; product is intended for single use only.
- Store remaining unopened packs in a clean, dry environment until required.
Contraindications
- Do not use if the sterile packaging is damaged, open, or past the expiry date.
- Not intended for permanent implantation; swabs must be removed at the end of the procedure in accordance with local swab-counting and retained-item-prevention policies.
- Use with caution in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to cotton or to any component of the product.
- Do not remove or cut away the X-ray detectable thread, as this may impair radiographic detectability and compromise safety checks.
- Not intended for use as an external dressing left in situ without appropriate monitoring and scheduled dressing changes.
Adverse Effects
- If a swab is inadvertently retained, there is a risk of foreign body reaction, infection, or other serious complications.
- Local irritation or sensitivity reactions may occur in rare cases in patients with cotton or material hypersensitivity.
- Improper use (e.g. failure to follow swab-counting procedures, re-use, or use after packaging compromise) may increase the risk of infection or retained-surgical-item incidents.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a cool, dry place.
- Protect from moisture, direct sunlight and excessive heat.
- Keep in original packaging until point of use to maintain sterility.
- Avoid crushing or compressing packs to prevent damage to packaging and swabs.
Duration
Single-use during a procedure only; swabs are not intended for long-term implantation or prolonged in situ use.
Onset
Not applicable; this is a non-pharmacological, mechanical wound management and fluid-absorption device.
