Ampoule Openers / Sharps Accessories
Description
The Safe Snap Amp Snapper is a reusable plastic ampoule opener designed to safely open glass ampoules while protecting the user from cuts and glass splinters. The plastic case completely encloses the neck of the ampoule (with the colour dot facing out), holding it securely so the top can be broken off with a simple snap action. After snapping, the device can be opened to remove the ampoule or locked in the open position so the contents can be drawn up in situ. It is suitable for standard small ampoules and also for larger 10 ml ampoules. Precision engineered for durability, the hinges are designed to last for at least 100 uses when handled correctly. The Safe Snap reduces the risk of injury, contamination and ampoule shattering in clinical, pharmacy and harm-reduction settings.
Bnefits
- Simple and effective method for safely opening glass ampoules without direct hand contact with glass.
- Plastic case completely encloses the ampoule neck, reducing risk of cuts and glass splinters.
- Reusable device with durable hinges designed to last for at least 100 opening cycles.
- Compatible with both small ampoules and larger 10 ml ampoules when positioned correctly in the body of the snapper.
- Lockable open position allows the ampoule to remain within the device while contents are drawn up, improving safety.
- Clear guidance (blue dot facing outwards) supports correct positioning and helps prevent shattering inside the device.
- Compact and lightweight; easily carried in a pocket for routine clinical use.
- Helps reduce blood-borne virus transmission risk associated with accidental injury from ampoule opening.
Indications
- For safe opening of scored or unscored glass ampoules in clinical, pharmacy, community and harm-reduction settings.
- Use by nurses, doctors, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals handling injectable medicines in ampoules.
- Use by harm-reduction services and clients to reduce risk of cuts and blood-borne virus transmission when opening water or medication ampoules.
- Situations where standard manual ampoule opening methods pose an increased risk of injury or contamination.
Composition
- Rigid plastic body and lid (hinged ampoule holder).
- Integral plastic hinges designed for repeated opening and closing.
- Moulded internal cavity to accommodate small glass ampoules and the neck of 10 ml ampoules.
- Locking clip on the back to hold the snapper in an open position when required.
Formulation
- Reusable hand-held ampoule opener constructed from durable plastic.
- Hinged clamshell design completely enclosing the ampoule neck during snapping.
- Locking feature to keep device open to allow aspiration of ampoule contents in situ.
- Available in several colours (commonly blue, pink, green, orange, purple) depending on supplier.
Packaging
- Supplied as a single Safe Snap Amp Snapper unit in simple retail or bulk packaging, depending on distributor.
- May be supplied loose or in a small bag/box with usage instructions printed on outer packaging or included leaflet.
Usage
- Ensure hands are clean and dry before use and inspect the ampoule and snapper for cracks or damage.
- Place the glass ampoule into the snapper so that the coloured dot on the ampoule neck is facing outwards, aligned with the instruction to ALWAYS HAVE THE BLUE DOT FACING OUT.
- Close the snapper fully so that the neck of the ampoule is enclosed within the hinge region of the device.
- Holding the base of the snapper firmly, apply a quick, firm bending motion to snap off the top of the ampoule at the scored neck.
- After snapping, open the device to remove the ampoule, or lock the snapper in the open position using the clip on the back and draw up the ampoule contents while it remains held in the device.
- For 10 ml ampoules, place only the top of the ampoule in the body section of the snapper, hold the lower part of the ampoule in your hand, and break with a snapping action.
- Always ensure correctly scored ampoules are positioned as instructed; incorrect placement increases the risk of the ampoule shattering inside the device.
- If the plastic has become cold and brittle (e.g. in winter or outdoor use), warm the snapper in a pocket or warm environment before use to reduce the risk of hinge breakage.
- Discard the snapped ampoule top and empty ampoule into an appropriate sharps or glass waste container in line with local policies.
- Replace the snapper if there are signs of hinge damage, cracking, or if it no longer closes or locks securely.
Contraindications
- Not intended for use with non-ampoule containers, vials or bottles.
- Do not use on ampoules that are visibly cracked, chipped or otherwise structurally compromised prior to insertion.
- Do not use if the snapper itself is cracked, deformed, has damaged hinges or fails to close/lock properly.
- Use with caution in extremely cold environments, as cold plastic may become more brittle and prone to hinge failure.
Adverse Effects
- If the ampoule is incorrectly positioned, there is a risk of the glass shattering within the device; care must be taken when opening and disposing of glass.
- If hinges fail due to damage or cold brittleness, the ampoule may not be fully enclosed, increasing the risk of glass cuts.
- Potential minor skin injury if user inserts fingers too close to the ampoule neck when snapping or when handling broken glass.
- Improper use contrary to instructions may not adequately reduce the risk of ampoule-related injury.
Storage Conditions
- Store at room temperature in a clean, dry environment.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme cold, which can make plastic brittle and increase the risk of hinge breakage.
- Keep away from direct heat sources and open flames.
- Store where it will not be crushed or distorted by heavy objects.
- Keep out of reach of children and individuals not trained or instructed in its safe use.
Duration
Reusable device; used for a single snapping action per ampoule and then reused for subsequent ampoules until wear or hinge damage requires replacement (hinges typically last at least 100 uses under normal conditions).
Onset
Immediate \u2013 provides safer ampoule opening at the moment of use.
