IV Extension Sets

Description

The B. Braun Safeflow Extension Set with Safeflow valve is a small-bore infusion extension line with a needle-free valve, designed to extend infusion lines via a Luer or Luer-lock connection. The 10 cm Neutrapur tubing has a small internal diameter to minimise dead space, making it suitable for adults, paediatric and neonate patients. The set is DEHP-free, with the Safeflow single extension set also PVC-free, and incorporates a rotating Luer-lock connector for easy, twist-free attachment. An integrated back-check valve helps prevent backflow of blood and fluids, supporting safe parallel pressure and gravity infusions. Each device is supplied sterile and intended for single use.

Bnefits

  • Extends infusion lines to allow manipulation away from the injection site
  • Enables needle-free infusion, aspiration and intermittent injection via Safeflow valve
  • Small-bore tubing with low internal volume, suitable for paediatric and neonate patients
  • Rotating Luer-lock connector allows safer, more convenient connection without twisting the tube
  • Integrated back-check valve helps prevent backflow of blood and fluids during parallel infusions
  • Neutrapur tubing with no leachable plasticizers, DEHP-free and patient-friendly
  • Supports maintenance of aseptic technique when changing IV administration sets
  • Pressure-resistant design suitable for standard infusion therapy

Indications

  • Extension of intravenous infusion lines for patients receiving IV therapy
  • Frequent connection and disconnection for aspiration and intermittent injection without needles
  • Situations where manipulation away from the IV insertion site is desired
  • Use in adult, paediatric and neonate patients requiring IV infusion therapy

Composition

  • Neutrapur small-bore tubing (DEHP-free, no plasticizer leachables)
  • PVC-free tubing for the single Safeflow extension set variant
  • Rotating Luer-lock connector
  • Integrated Safeflow needle-free valve
  • Back-check valve (for prevention of backflow of fluids and blood)

Formulation

  • Small-bore extension line with integrated Safeflow needle-free valve and back-check valve
  • 10 cm Neutrapur tubing with approximately 1.0 mm internal diameter
  • Pressure resistance up to approximately 2 bar (as per B. Braun catalogue specifications)

Packaging

  • Box of 100 individually sterile-packed Safeflow extension sets
  • Each unit: 10 cm small-bore tubing with Safeflow valve and rotating Luer-lock connector

Usage

  • Use only if the sterile package is intact and within the stated shelf life.
  • Maintain aseptic technique when opening the package and handling the extension set.
  • Connect the rotating Luer-lock connector to the IV catheter or infusion system, ensuring a secure connection.
  • Prime the extension line with the prescribed infusion solution to remove air before connecting to the patient.
  • Use the Safeflow needle-free valve for infusion, aspiration and intermittent injection in accordance with local protocols.
  • Avoid excessive pressure beyond the manufacturer’s recommended limits during infusion.
  • After use, disconnect in accordance with local infection control policies and dispose of the device as clinical sharps/waste.
  • Single-use only; do not resterilize or reuse.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if the packaging is damaged or the sterility has been compromised.
  • Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to any materials in the device if identified by the manufacturer.
  • Not intended for use outside standard intravenous infusion therapy unless specifically authorised by a clinician.
  • Avoid use where the added line resistance or dead space may compromise critical high-flow or high-pressure infusions, according to clinical judgement.

Adverse Effects

  • Potential risk of infection or sepsis if aseptic technique is not followed.
  • Risk of air embolism if the line is not properly primed prior to connection.
  • Possible extravasation or infiltration if connected to a malpositioned IV catheter.
  • Potential for leakage or disconnection if Luer connections are not properly secured.
  • General risks associated with intravenous infusion therapy as per clinical practice.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in original packaging until use.
  • Keep in a clean, dry environment at room temperature.
  • Protect from excessive heat, freezing and direct sunlight.
