IV Extension Sets / Y-Extension Lines
Description
The Safeflow Y Infusion Line Extension Set is a small-bore Y-shaped extension set for infusion lines, designed to extend existing IV systems via Luer or Luer-lock connections while providing two needle-free Safeflow access valves. Manufactured by B. Braun, it uses DEHP-free, PVC-free Neutrapur tubing with a small internal diameter to minimise priming volume, making it suitable for adults, paediatric and neonate patients. The set enables infusion, aspiration and intermittent injection away from the IV insertion site, supporting aseptic technique during line changes and repeated access. Each sterile, single-use set features two Safeflow valves, a rotating Luer-lock connector and small-bore tubing for efficient and safe infusion therapy.
Bnefits
- Y-shaped small-bore extension set with two Safeflow needle-free valves for dual access to an infusion line.
- Allows manipulation and access away from the injection site, improving ergonomics and reducing disturbance of the cannula.
- Supports infusion, aspiration and intermittent injection without the use of needles, reducing needlestick injury risk.
- Neutrapur tubing with no leachable plasticizer (DEHP-free and PVC-free) is particularly patient-friendly and supports ecological disposal.
- Small internal diameter minimises internal volume, ideal for paediatric and neonate patients where dead space must be reduced.
- Rotating Luer-lock connector provides safer, more convenient connection without twisting the tubing.
- DEHP-free, latex-free construction aligns with modern infusion safety and compatibility standards.
- Closed, needle-free system supports maintenance of aseptic technique when changing IV administration sets.
Indications
- Extension of intravenous infusion lines where dual needle-free access points are required.
- Repeated aspiration of blood samples and intermittent medication injections via a closed, needle-free system.
- Use in adult, paediatric and neonate patients receiving IV infusion or transfusion therapy.
- Situations where manipulation away from the IV insertion site is clinically advantageous (e.g. to reduce dislodgement risk or improve workflow).
Composition
- Neutrapur small-bore tubing (DEHP-free, PVC-free, no plasticizer leachables).
- Two Safeflow needle-free membrane valves integrated in a Y-configuration.
- Rotating Luer-lock connector compatible with Luer and Luer-lock systems.
- Latex-free materials in patient-contacting components.
- Sterile single-use plastic components designed for pressure resistance up to approximately 2 bar (per B. Braun extension set specifications).
Formulation
- Smallbore Y-extension set for infusion lines with two Safeflow needle-free valves.
- Tube length approximately 12 cm.
- Inner tubing diameter approximately 1.0 mm.
- DEHP-free, PVC-free Neutrapur tubing, latex-free.
- Compatible with standard Luer and Luer-lock IV systems and intravenous catheters.
Packaging
- Box of 100 Safeflow Y Infusion Line Extension Sets.
- Each extension set supplied individually sterile-packed in a peel-open blister or pouch.
- Outer carton labelled with B. Braun branding, reference number (REF 4097145N), lot number and expiry date.
Usage
- Use only if the sterile package is intact and within the expiry date.
- Open the sterile pack using aseptic technique immediately prior to use.
- Connect the rotating Luer-lock connector securely to the IV catheter hub or existing infusion line, ensuring a firm, leak-free connection.
- Prime the Y-extension line and both Safeflow valves with the prescribed infusion solution to remove air before connecting to the patient.
- Use the Safeflow needle-free valves for infusion, aspiration and intermittent injection according to local protocols, disinfecting the valve membrane before each access.
- Avoid exceeding the manufacturer’s recommended pressure limits during pressure infusions.
- Monitor the infusion site and extension set regularly for signs of leakage, occlusion or disconnection.
- After the infusion episode or when the set is no longer required, disconnect and dispose of the used extension set as clinical waste in accordance with local regulations.
- Single-use only; do not reprocess, resterilize or reuse.
Contraindications
- Do not use if the sterile packaging is damaged, opened or shows signs of contamination.
- Not intended for uses other than intravenous infusion, transfusion, aspiration and intermittent injection via compatible Luer systems.
- Use with caution in clinical situations where any added line resistance, priming volume or Y-configuration may compromise high-flow or critical infusions, according to clinical judgement.
- Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to any materials in the device if such sensitivity is identified.
Adverse Effects
- Risk of infection or sepsis if aseptic technique is not maintained during connection and access of the Safeflow valves.
- Risk of air embolism if the line and valves are not fully primed prior to connection.
- Potential extravasation or infiltration if connected to a malpositioned or dislodged IV catheter.
- Leakage or disconnection if Luer-lock connections are not properly secured.
- General risks associated with intravenous infusion therapy, including phlebitis and thrombosis, independent of the extension set.
Storage Conditions
- Store in the original packaging in a clean, dry environment at room temperature as specified on the carton.
- Protect from direct sunlight, excessive heat and freezing.
- Do not use after the expiry date indicated on the packaging.
- Keep out of the reach of children and unauthorised personnel.
Duration
Single-use disposable device intended for use for the duration of an infusion episode or as determined by local IV set change policies, after which it must be replaced.
Onset
Not applicable; mechanical extension and access device providing immediate functionality once connected and primed.
