Safety hypodermic needles
Description
The Safety Hypodermic Needle EasyPoint® Retractable Needle 23G x 1\ is a sterile, single-use safety hypodermic needle designed to reduce needlestick injuries and enhance injection safety. It features automated needle retraction and a clear safety chamber that encloses the contaminated needle after use. The 23-gauge, 1-inch (25 mm) stainless steel needle has a regular wall and a triple-beveled, lubricated tip for patient comfort. EasyPoint needles are compatible with standard Luer-lock and Luer-slip syringes, including pre-filled syringes of 3 mL and smaller. The automated pre-removal or post-removal activation allows single-handed use while keeping the clinician’s fingers behind the exposed sharp at all times, and once activated the safety mechanism automatically covers the syringe Luer tip, helping to prevent exposure to blood, body fluids or medication. The product is not made with natural rubber latex and is supplied in boxes of 50 sterile retractable safety needles.
Bnefits
- Automated retractable safety mechanism that encloses the needle in a clear safety chamber after activation, reducing needlestick injury risk.
- Single-handed activation with minimal change in injection technique, keeping the clinician’s fingers behind the exposed sharp at all times.
- Can be activated either before or after removal from the patient, providing flexibility according to clinical practice and policy.
- Triple-beveled, lubricated stainless steel needle for smoother penetration and improved patient comfort during injection.
- Automatic coverage of the syringe Luer tip after retraction, helping to reduce exposure to medication, blood and other body fluids.
- Color-coded hub and activation tab for easy gauge identification (blue for 23G) and intuitive use.
- Compatible with Luer-lock and Luer-slip syringes, including pre-filled syringes of 3 mL and smaller.
- Single-use, sterile and not made with natural rubber latex, supporting infection prevention and allergy risk reduction.
- Remains safe through disposal, eliminating the need for needle recapping and supporting sharps safety protocols.
Indications
- Administration of injectable medications and vaccines via intramuscular, subcutaneous or other hypodermic routes where a 23G x 1" needle is clinically appropriate.
- Use in general medical, surgical, outpatient, emergency and primary care settings requiring a safety-engineered hypodermic needle.
- Situations where reduction of needlestick injury risk is required by policy or regulation, such as hospital and clinic environments.
- Use with compatible Luer-lock and Luer-slip syringes, including certain pre-filled syringes up to 3 mL capacity, following manufacturer guidance.
Composition
- Stainless steel 23G x 1" (25 mm) hypodermic needle with regular wall and triple-beveled, lubricated tip.
- Plastic needle hub with standard Luer connection compatible with Luer-lock and Luer-slip syringes.
- Integrated clear plastic safety chamber that houses the needle after retraction.
- Color-coded activation tab and hub (blue for 23G) for gauge identification and safety mechanism activation.
- Not made with natural rubber latex.
Formulation
- Non-medicated, mechanical medical device consisting of a 23G x 1" stainless steel hypodermic needle with an integrated retractable safety mechanism.
- Designed for use with Luer-lock and Luer-slip syringes, including compatible pre-filled syringes up to 3 mL, for injection of liquids such as medications or vaccines.
Packaging
- Box of 50 individually sterile-packed EasyPoint® retractable safety hypodermic needles (23G x 1").
- Each unit supplied in a peel-open sterile blister or pouch with labelling indicating gauge, length, lot number and expiry date.
- Outer carton carries EasyPoint® and Retractable Technologies branding, product description, catalog number (82031 for 23G x 1"), sterility symbols and regulatory markings.
Usage
- Inspect the packaging before use; do not use if the sterile pack is damaged or the expiry date has passed.
- Open the sterile package immediately before use using aseptic technique.
- Securely attach the EasyPoint® needle hub to a compatible Luer-lock or Luer-slip syringe containing the prescribed medication, ensuring a tight fit.
- Prime the needle if required, following institutional policy, taking care to avoid accidental activation of the safety mechanism.
- Prepare and disinfect the injection site according to local guidelines and allow to dry.
- Administer the injection using standard technique appropriate for the route (e.g. intramuscular, subcutaneous) while maintaining control of the syringe and needle.
- After the injection, either before or after removing the needle from the patient (according to local policy), activate the safety mechanism by squeezing or pressing the color-coded activation tab and safety chamber as shown in the manufacturer’s instructions, allowing the needle to retract automatically into the clear safety chamber.
- Visually confirm that the needle has fully retracted into the chamber and that the syringe Luer tip is covered by the safety mechanism.
- Do not attempt to recap, bend or otherwise manipulate the used needle; immediately dispose of the entire needle-syringe assembly into an approved sharps container.
- Do not reuse. Single use only.
Contraindications
- Do not use if the sterile packaging is damaged or compromised, or if the product is past its expiry date.
- Not intended for arterial puncture, spinal/epidural procedures or any use other than hypodermic injection as directed by clinical guidelines.
- Do not use for infusion as an indwelling device; designed for single, brief injections only.
- Do not use if the needle, hub or safety chamber appears bent, cracked, deformed or if the safety mechanism has been pre-activated.
- Use with caution in patients with bleeding disorders or those on anticoagulant therapy, following appropriate clinical judgement and guidelines.
Adverse Effects
- Local pain, redness, bruising or haematoma at the injection site, similar to other hypodermic needle procedures.
- Bleeding at the injection site, particularly in patients with clotting abnormalities or on anticoagulant medication.
- Rare risk of infection at the injection site if aseptic technique is not followed.
- Vasovagal reactions such as dizziness, nausea or fainting in susceptible individuals during or after injection.
- Very rare risk of needle or device malfunction; if retraction fails or is incomplete, handle using sharps precautions and dispose safely according to local protocol.
- Potential allergic or hypersensitivity reactions to needle or hub materials, though the device is not made with natural rubber latex.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a clean, dry environment in the original packaging until use.
- Keep at room temperature within the range specified by the manufacturer; avoid extremes of heat, cold or humidity.
