Safety blood collection needle (butterfly)

Description

The Safety-Multifly® Needle 21G x 3/4'', green, is a sterile, single-use safety butterfly blood collection needle with integrated Multi-adapter and 80 mm length tubing. The set is DEHP-free, non-pyrogenic/endotoxin-free and gas sterilised, with a membrane screw-cap connection designed for use with evacuated blood collection systems. The short 80 mm tube length minimises dead volume, making it particularly suitable for paediatric and low-volume venous blood collection while maintaining patient and user safety via an integrated safety mechanism. Supplied as 1 needle per sterile blister, 120 pieces per box.

Bnefits

  • Integrated safety mechanism (safety product) designed to reduce needlestick injury risk after blood collection.
  • Short 80 mm tubing minimises dead volume and blood loss, particularly useful for paediatric or low-volume blood draws.
  • Sterile, non-pyrogenic/endotoxin-free construction to support infection prevention during venous blood collection.
  • DEHP-free plasticiser in the tubing and components to reduce exposure to potentially harmful plasticisers.
  • CE-certified medical device (CE 0124 – DEKRA) with documented batch control for traceability.
  • Pre-assembled Multi-adapter and membrane screw cap simplify connection to standard evacuated blood collection systems.
  • Individually blister packed, single-use design helps ensure sterility and convenient clinical handling.

Indications

  • Venous blood collection using evacuated blood collection systems (e.g. for diagnostic laboratory testing).
  • Paediatric and low-volume venous blood sampling where reduced dead volume is required (80 mm tube length).
  • Situations where a safety butterfly needle is preferred to minimise the risk of accidental needlestick injury.
  • Short-term infusion when used as part of a compatible Safety-Multifly-based set according to manufacturer instructions.

Composition

  • Winged venous blood collection needle with metal needle cannula (21G / 0.8 mm external diameter) and plastic hub.
  • Flexible DEHP-free polymer tubing, 2.3 mm diameter, 80 mm length.
  • Plastic Multi-adapter with membrane screw-cap connection compatible with evacuated blood collection systems.
  • Supplied sterile, non-pyrogenic/endotoxin-free (gas sterilised).

Packaging

  • 1 needle set per sterile blister pack.
  • 120 pieces per inner box (box of 120).
  • Inner box dimensions approximately 214 mm (width) x 224 mm (depth) x 171 mm (height).
  • Cases and pallet quantities available from manufacturer (multi-box packaging for bulk supply).

Usage

  • Use only if the sterile blister packaging is intact and within the labelled expiry date.
  • Connect the Multi-adapter with membrane screw cap to the appropriate evacuated blood collection system or holder according to institutional protocol.
  • Perform venepuncture using standard aseptic technique, positioning the butterfly wings to stabilise the needle at the puncture site.
  • Collect the required blood volume using evacuated tubes in the recommended order of draw.
  • After blood collection (and any short-term infusion where applicable), activate the integrated safety mechanism as described in the Instructions for Use while keeping hands behind the needle tip.
  • Dispose of the locked safety needle immediately in an approved sharps container; do not attempt to disengage the safety mechanism once activated.
  • Single use only; do not resterilise or reuse.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if the sterile blister pack is damaged or opened prior to use.
  • Do not reuse; re-use of single-use venous blood collection needles can lead to infection, loss of sterility, or device malfunction.
  • Not intended for long-term vascular access; for short-term blood collection or short-term infusion only as per manufacturer guidance.

Adverse Effects

  • As with any venepuncture, there is potential for local pain, bruising or haematoma at the puncture site.
  • Incorrect use may increase the risk of needlestick injury if the safety mechanism is not activated according to instructions.
  • Improper handling or reuse can increase the risk of infection or cross-contamination.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a cool, dry place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
  • Keep in original packaging until point of use to maintain sterility.
  • Protect from excessive moisture and mechanical damage.
