Intraosseous access training needles

Description

SAM IO® Training Needles - Pack of 15 are 15g intraosseous (IO) training needles designed exclusively for simulated use with the SAM IO® Training Driver and SAM IO® Training Kit. Supplied as a mixed pack of 15 needles (5 x 15 mm pink, 5 x 25 mm blue, 5 x 45 mm yellow), they replicate clinical intraosseous access in training environments without being used on patients. Each needle consists of a stylet/catheter assembly with a snap-fit hub that locks securely into the SAM IO® Driver. The unique 5-point grind and optimised needle-tip geometry enable smooth penetration of cortical bone in training models, allowing realistic practice of fast, stable IO access when IV access is difficult or impossible. These needles are non-sterile and for training use only.

Bnefits

  • Specifically designed for intraosseous access training, enabling realistic simulation of IO procedures when vascular access is difficult or impossible.
  • 15g stylet/catheter combination with secure snap-fit hub provides a stable connection to the SAM IO® Driver during insertion.
  • Unique 5-point grind and optimised needle-tip geometry promote smooth, efficient penetration of simulated cortical bone for rapid, accurate access in time-critical training scenarios.
  • Supplied as a mixed pack of three colour-coded lengths (15 mm pink, 25 mm blue, 45 mm yellow) to support site- and patient-size-specific placement practice.
  • Compatible with the SAM IO® Training Kit and training “sawbones” or other simulation models used in education and skills labs.
  • Non-sterile, reusable in accordance with local training and simulation protocols (not for clinical use on patients).

Indications

  • Simulation and skills training in intraosseous (IO) access using the SAM IO® Driver and training models.
  • Education of clinicians, paramedics, military medics, and students in gaining fast, stable IO access when IV access is difficult or not possible.
  • Practice of IO placement at recommended training sites such as proximal tibia (adults), humeral head (adults) and distal tibia (paediatrics, on models only).

Composition

  • 15g intraosseous training needles comprising a stylet and catheter (needle assembly) with snap-fit hub designed to interface with the SAM IO® Driver.
  • Metal needle shaft (training-grade metal alloy, typically stainless-steel) with 5-point cutting grind, and plastic hub components.
  • Non-sterile training construction (not intended for clinical, in-patient use).

Formulation

  • Mechanical intraosseous training needle (no medicinal or pharmaceutical formulation).
  • Stylet/catheter assembly with snap-fit connection for use with the manually actuated SAM IO® Driver.

Packaging

  • Pack of 15 SAM IO® Training Needles.
  • Mixed set containing 5 x 15 mm pink needles, 5 x 25 mm blue needles and 5 x 45 mm yellow needles.
  • Supplied in manufacturer packaging suitable for storage and transport within training and education environments.

Usage

  • For training and simulation use only. Do NOT use on human or animal patients.
  • Use only with the SAM IO® Training Driver and compatible SAM IO® Training Kit components, following the training kit instructions and institutional protocols.
  • Select needle length based on the simulated patient size and insertion site: 15 mm (pink) for paediatric or small anatomy, 25 mm (blue) for standard adult use, 45 mm (yellow) for bariatric or high soft-tissue depth training scenarios.
  • Attach the training needle to the SAM IO® Driver using the snap-fit hub, ensuring it is fully seated and locked before use.
  • Identify the appropriate simulated insertion site (e.g. proximal tibia, humeral head, distal tibia on training models) and follow standard IO landmarking and technique as taught in training.
  • Actuate the SAM IO® Driver according to its instructions (repeated trigger compression while applying controlled pressure) to advance the needle through the simulated cortical bone into the medullary space of the training model.
  • Once correct depth is achieved in the model, stabilise the needle and follow the training scenario requirements (e.g. attach extension tubing, confirm flow, etc., using training equipment only).
  • After the training session, carefully remove the needle from the model and handle as a sharp device; dispose of or re-use only in accordance with local training policies and manufacturer guidance.
  • Store needles safely between sessions to prevent damage or accidental injury. Replace needles that become visibly bent, damaged or excessively worn.

Contraindications

  • Not intended for clinical use on human or animal patients.
  • Do not use in any situation where sterile, clinically approved intraosseous access is required.
  • Should not be used in magnetic resonance (MRI) environments, as the needle assembly is not MRI-compatible.
  • Do not use if any part of the needle assembly is visibly damaged, bent, or unable to lock securely into the SAM IO® Driver.

Adverse Effects

  • Because the product is for simulation and training only, there are no direct patient adverse effects; however, there is a risk of sharps injury to users if the needles are mishandled.
  • Potential for damage to training models or manikins if needles are inserted incorrectly, excessively forced, or reused beyond recommended limits.
  • Improper training use (e.g. incorrect landmarking technique) may lead to poor skill acquisition, which could indirectly affect real-world clinical performance if not corrected through proper instruction and supervision.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a clean, dry environment at room temperature.
  • Keep in original packaging or a suitable sharps-safe training container when not in use to protect needle tips and prevent accidental injury.
  • Avoid exposure to moisture, corrosive environments or extreme temperatures that may degrade materials or performance.
  • Keep out of reach of unauthorised personnel and children.
