Description

Savlon Antiseptic Cream 100g is a multi-purpose topical antiseptic cream used as a first-aid treatment for minor wounds and everyday skin problems. It contains the antiseptics cetrimide 0.5% w/w and chlorhexidine digluconate 0.1% w/w, which help cleanse the skin and prevent infection. The emollient cream base soothes and protects irritated skin, supporting the natural healing of minor cuts and grazes, insect bites and stings, minor burns and scalds, shaving cuts, blisters and sores, chapped skin, nappy rash, spots, blackheads and sunburn. It is for external use only and suitable for adults and children.

Indications

  • For the cleansing and prevention of infection in minor skin lesions and superficial wounds.
  • First-aid treatment for: cuts and grazes, insect bites and stings, minor burns and scalds, shaving cuts.
  • Relief and protection of skin problems such as: blisters and sores, chapped skin, nappy rash, spots and blackheads, sunburn.
  • May be used as an antiseptic hand cream on minor skin irritations.

Composition

  • Active ingredients (per 1 g cream):
  • Cetrimide 0.5% w/w (5 mg/g).
  • Chlorhexidine digluconate 0.1% w/w (1 mg/g).
  • Excipients:
  • Cetostearyl alcohol 10% w/w.
  • Liquid paraffin.
  • Methyl hydroxybenzoate (E218).
  • Propyl hydroxybenzoate (E216).
  • Disodium edetate.
  • Perfume (including limonene, linalool, benzyl benzoate, citral).
  • Purified water.

Formulation

  • Oil-in-water emollient cream containing cetrimide and chlorhexidine digluconate as topical antiseptics.

Packaging

  • Aluminium or laminate tube containing 100 g of Savlon Antiseptic Cream with screw cap.
  • Packed in an outer carton with patient information leaflet.
  • Also available in other tube sizes (15 g, 30 g, 60 g) in the same formulation.

Usage

  • For external use only.
  • Before application, clean and, if necessary, gently dry the affected area.
  • With clean hands, gently apply a small amount of Savlon Antiseptic Cream to the affected area.
  • Apply as often as required, usually several times a day, or as directed by a healthcare professional.
  • For nappy rash, ensure the area is clean and dry before applying a thin layer of cream at each nappy change.
  • Do not use on the eyes, ears, inside the mouth, or on large areas of broken skin.
  • If symptoms persist, worsen or there is no improvement after a few days, seek medical advice.
  • Always read the enclosed leaflet before use and follow the directions and warnings carefully.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity or known allergy to cetrimide, chlorhexidine digluconate, cetostearyl alcohol, parahydroxybenzoates (methyl or propyl hydroxybenzoate) or any of the other ingredients.
  • Do not use in or around the eyes, in the middle ear, on meninges or other nervous tissue.
  • Do not use on deep, large or serious wounds, severe burns or heavily contaminated injuries without medical supervision.
  • Not to be used in cases of known chlorhexidine-related allergic reactions or anaphylaxis.

Adverse Effects

  • Very rare but serious allergic reactions (including anaphylactic reactions) to chlorhexidine have been reported; signs include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, dizziness and severe skin reactions. Stop use and seek urgent medical help if these occur.
  • Local skin reactions such as irritation, redness, rash or itching at the application site may occur.
  • Cetostearyl alcohol may cause local skin reactions (e.g. contact dermatitis).
  • Parahydroxybenzoates (methyl and propyl hydroxybenzoate) may cause allergic reactions, which can be delayed.
  • Fragrance components (limonene, linalool, benzyl benzoate, citral) may cause allergic reactions in susceptible individuals.

Storage Conditions

  • Do not store above 25°C.
  • Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use.
  • Use within the period specified on the packaging after first opening (commonly 12 months).
  • Do not use after the expiry date printed on the end of the tube and carton.
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
