Incontinence and pressure sore prevention barrier cream (infection control, continence care)
Description
Cytolax Barrier Cream (Pack of 20 x 10 g sachets) is a hypoallergenic, pH-balanced barrier cream designed to protect intact and mildly damaged skin from irritation caused by body fluids, particularly in patients with urinary or faecal incontinence and those at risk of pressure sores. The transparent, non-greasy cream forms a durable protective layer on the skin that resists wash-off and provides up to 24-hour protection while allowing the skin to breathe. Enriched with Aloe Vera extract, Shea Butter and vitamins, it helps prevent sores and skin irritation, repairs damaged skin and moisturises dry skin. The 10 g single-use sachets are convenient for travel, home care, community nursing and hospital use, helping to support infection control and continence care protocols.

Usage
- For external use only.
- Clean and gently pat dry the affected area of skin before application, ensuring that urine and/or faeces have been thoroughly removed.
- Tear open one 10 g sachet and dispense a small amount of cream onto a gloved finger or applicator.
- Apply a thin, even layer of cream to the area requiring protection (e.g. perineal, peri-anal or buttock area, or other at-risk skin), ensuring complete coverage of skin likely to be exposed to body fluids.
- Use the minimum amount of cream necessary to create a thin yet continuous protective film; excessive thickness is not required.
- Reapply as needed, particularly after cleansing the skin following further episodes of incontinence, or as directed by local protocols or a healthcare professional.
- Can be used on intact and mildly damaged skin; if skin breakdown is severe, infected or deteriorating, seek medical assessment.
- Avoid contact with eyes; if contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
- Dispose of used sachets in accordance with local clinical waste policies; do not reuse opened sachets.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity or allergy to any component of the cream (including Aloe Vera, Shea Butter or any excipients).
- Do not apply to heavily broken, bleeding or acutely infected skin unless advised by a healthcare professional.
- Avoid use on deep pressure ulcers or open wounds where a different wound-care regimen is indicated.
- Not for ophthalmic use; avoid contact with eyes.
- If a rash, worsening irritation or signs of allergic reaction (e.g. redness, swelling, itching) occur, discontinue use and seek medical advice.
- Use in infants, children or other specific patient groups should follow local clinical guidance and professional judgement, as explicit age indications are not detailed in publicly available information.
Adverse Effects
- Most users tolerate Cytolax Barrier Cream well; adverse effects are uncommon.
- Possible mild local reactions at the application site such as transient redness, itching or irritation in sensitive individuals.
- Rarely, allergic or hypersensitivity reactions may occur to one or more ingredients (e.g. plant extracts, Shea Butter or preservatives), presenting as persistent erythema, swelling, pruritus or dermatitis.
- If significant irritation or suspected allergy occurs, discontinue use, gently cleanse the area to remove residual cream and seek medical advice.
- No systemic side effects are expected when used topically as directed.
Storage Conditions
- Store at room temperature in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
- Keep sachets in their original carton until use to protect from contamination and physical damage.
- Ensure sachets are intact and within expiry date before use; do not use if packaging is damaged.
- Once opened, each 10 g sachet is intended for single-patient use and should be discarded after use; do not attempt to reseal or reuse.
- Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
Duration
Provides up to 24 hours of barrier protection per application under typical use, depending on the degree and frequency of exposure to urine/faeces and cleansing routines. In practice, the cream is usually reapplied after episodes of incontinence or routine skin care, forming part of an ongoing daily continence and pressure-area management regimen rather than a fixed-duration course.
Onset
Barrier effect begins immediately upon application as the cream forms a transparent protective layer on the skin. Soothing and moisturising benefits are typically felt shortly after application, with continued protection and comfort lasting for many hours (up to approximately 24 hours) until the cream is removed or gradually worn off.
