Paraffin-based emollient and soap substitute
Description
Hydromol Ointment 500g is a highly occlusive, soft emollient ointment formulated with cetomacrogol emulsifying wax, yellow soft paraffin and liquid paraffin to hydrate, soften and protect very dry, itchy and eczema-prone skin. Free from added fragrances, colours, preservatives and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), it is suitable for sensitive skin and all ages. Hydromol Ointment can be used as a leave-on emollient, a bath additive, or a soap substitute to help restore the skin barrier and reduce trans-epidermal water loss in conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, ichthyosis and other dry skin disorders.
Bnefits
- Hydrates and softens very dry, rough and scaly skin.
- Forms a highly occlusive barrier on the skin surface to lock in moisture and reduce trans-epidermal water loss.
- 3-in-1 use: can be applied as a leave-on emollient, used as a bath additive, or as a soap substitute.
- Free from added fragrances, colours and preservatives, helping to minimise irritation for sensitive or allergy-prone skin.
- Does not contain Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), making it suitable for people who are sensitive or allergic to this surfactant.
- Steroid-free option for ongoing management in between or alongside prescribed anti-inflammatory treatments.
- Suitable for all ages, including children, where emollient therapy is required under appropriate supervision.
- Can be used under wet wraps or as a night-time treatment for very dry or thickened skin.
Indications
- General management of dry and very dry skin.
- Atopic eczema and other forms of dermatitis where dry skin is a feature.
- Psoriasis with associated dryness and scaling (as an emollient component of management).
- Ichthyosis and other ichthyotic conditions.
- Senile pruritus and age-related dry skin.
- Use as a soap substitute for cleansing when conventional soaps and detergents aggravate dry or sensitive skin.
- Adjunctive therapy to help maintain skin hydration and barrier function between flare-ups of inflammatory skin disease.
Composition
- Liquid paraffin 42.5% w/w
- Yellow soft paraffin 32% w/w
- Cetomacrogol emulsifying wax 25.5% w/w (contains cetostearyl alcohol and macrogol cetostearyl ether)
Formulation
- Pale yellow, translucent, soft ointment with an occlusive base.
- Paraffin-based emollient containing liquid paraffin and yellow soft paraffin in a cetomacrogol emulsifying wax base.
- Free from added fragrances, colours and preservatives.
- Free from Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS).
- Can be used as an all-purpose emollient, bath additive and soap substitute.
Packaging
- 500 g tub (pharmaceutical pack size).
- Also available in other sizes such as 125 g tubs and 100 g / 50 g packs, depending on supplier.
- Tub presentation with screw-top lid to protect product from contamination when stored and in use.
Usage
- For external use only.
- Leave-on emollient: Apply Hydromol Ointment directly to the affected areas of skin as often as required. Use clean hands and smooth gently in the direction of hair growth. Do not rub vigorously as this may irritate the skin.
- Soap substitute: Use Hydromol Ointment instead of conventional soap or shower gel. Apply to wet skin, gently massage over the area to be washed and rinse off with water. Pat skin dry rather than rubbing.
- Bath additive: Melt a small amount of Hydromol Ointment in warm water in a suitable container, then add the mixture to the bath. Take care entering and leaving the bath as surfaces will be slippery.
- Hydromol Ointment can be used under wet wraps or as an intensive night-time treatment where directed by a healthcare professional.
- Continue using regularly even when the skin appears improved, unless otherwise advised, to help maintain the skin barrier.
- Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes and broken skin unless directed by a healthcare professional.
- After application, clothing, dressings and bedding in contact with the product may present an increased fire risk; keep away from naked flames, candles, cigarettes and other ignition sources.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity or allergy to liquid paraffin, yellow soft paraffin, cetomacrogol emulsifying wax, cetostearyl alcohol or any other component of the product.
- Do not apply directly to acutely broken, heavily exudative or infected skin unless specifically directed by a clinician.
- Do not use on the eyes, mucous membranes or in body cavities.
- Use with caution and medical supervision in patients with a history of paraffin sensitivity or contact dermatitis to emollient components.
Adverse Effects
- Occasional mild skin reactions such as irritation, redness, burning or stinging at the application site.
- Rare allergic contact dermatitis or hypersensitivity reactions attributable to paraffin components or cetostearyl alcohol.
- Prolonged use of paraffin-based products on dressings, clothing or bedding may increase flammability; if these materials become impregnated with the product they can catch fire more easily in the presence of an ignition source.
- If any unexpected or severe skin reaction occurs, discontinue use and seek advice from a healthcare professional.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a cool, dry place at room temperature, away from direct heat and sunlight.
- Keep the tub tightly closed when not in use to avoid contamination and drying out of the ointment.
- Do not use after the expiry date printed on the original packaging.
- Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
- Do not store near open flames, lit cigarettes or other ignition sources due to paraffin content.
Duration
Intended for long-term, continuous use as part of ongoing emollient therapy. Apply regularly (often multiple times per day) and continue as needed to maintain skin hydration, or as advised by a healthcare professional.
Onset
Softening and moisturising effects are usually noticed shortly after application as the ointment forms an occlusive barrier and reduces water loss; sustained improvement in dryness, itch and scaling typically develops over days to weeks of regular use.
