Description
The Terumo Obturator for I.V. Catheter (Green) - 18G, 1.3 mm, 45 mm is a sterile, single-use closure device designed for use with compatible Terumo I.V. catheters (e.g. Surflo, Versatus, Surshield series). Colour-coded green for 18G catheters, it is inserted into the catheter hub between intermittent infusions or aspirations to close the catheter lumen and help prevent blood reflux and clot formation. Each polypropylene obturator is supplied with a polyethylene protector, is latex-free and PVC-free, and is ethylene-oxide sterilised. Supplied as a case of 500 obturators for hospital, clinic and laboratory infusion therapy use.

Indications
- Closure of compatible Terumo intravenous catheters between intermittent infusions or aspirations

- Use with Terumo Surflo, Surflo S-Plus, Surflo-W, Versatus and Surshield IV catheter families where an 18G obturator is specified

Packaging

Usage
- Verify that the obturator size and colour (green, 18G, 1.3 mm, 45 mm) match the compatible IV catheter.
- Check the unit pack integrity; do not use if the blister or packaging is damaged.
- Perform hand hygiene and use appropriate aseptic technique before handling the device.
- Open the sterile blister immediately prior to use.
- Insert the obturator securely into the hub of the compatible IV catheter to close the lumen between intermittent infusions or aspirations.
- Ensure the obturator is fully seated and stable before leaving the catheter unattended.
- Remove the obturator before infusing fluids, administering medications or aspirating through the catheter.
- Do not reuse or resterilise; dispose of the obturator safely as clinical sharps/waste after single use.
- Store in original packaging until use and observe the expiry date printed on the pack.
Contraindications
- Do not use if the sterile blister pack or packaging is damaged or opened before use.
- Do not reuse or resterilise; single-use device only.
- Not intended for direct intravascular infusion, injection or drug delivery.
- Use only with compatible Terumo IV catheters of matching gauge and specification.
- Use with caution or avoid in patients with known hypersensitivity to polypropylene, polyethylene or ethylene-oxide-sterilised polymer devices.
Adverse Effects
- Potential local irritation or hypersensitivity reaction in patients with material allergies (e.g. to polypropylene, polyethylene or EO residues).
- Risk of catheter occlusion, malfunction or loss of patency if the obturator is not correctly selected or seated.
- Risk of infection or catheter-related complications if aseptic technique is not followed or if the device is reused contrary to instructions.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a clean, dry environment in the original packaging.
- Avoid storage at extreme temperatures and humidity.
- Observe the labelled expiry date; typical shelf life up to 5 years from manufacture.
- Protect from direct sunlight and physical damage to blister packs.
Duration
Used intermittently for as long as the compatible IV catheter remains in situ and requires closure between infusions; each obturator is single-use and should be discarded after one use.
Onset
Immediate mechanical closure of the IV catheter lumen and protection against blood reflux and clot formation upon correct insertion into the catheter hub.
