Description

The VACUETTE Luer Adapter 20G is a sterile, single-use, non-invasive medical device used as a connector in venous blood collection. Supplied as a pack of 100, each 20G luer adapter is designed for use with VACUETTE tube holders and compatible winged or luer needles to allow safe and reliable venous blood collection into one or multiple blood collection tubes for in vitro diagnostic testing in hospitals, clinics and laboratories. The adapter is manufactured from stainless steel and polypropylene, is not made with natural rubber latex or DEHP, and incorporates a safety valve and perforated integrity seal to help prevent leakage and maintain sterility.

Packaging

Larger manufacturer packing configurations available (up to 6000 units per shipping carton), but the Medisave retail pack is 100 adapters.

Usage

For use by properly trained healthcare professionals only and in accordance with the VACUETTE instructions for use and local facility protocols.
Before use, inspect the packaging and perforated label: do not use if the label is broken, packaging is damaged or unintentionally opened, or if the product is past its expiry date.
Grasp both ends of the luer cover and carefully twist to break the perforated label seal.
Remove the shorter end of the cover and thread the luer adapter securely into a compatible VACUETTE tube holder, ensuring it is firmly seated.
Remove the longer end of the cover from the luer adapter and attach a compatible winged needle or luer needle as per facility procedure.
Select and prepare the venipuncture site using appropriate antiseptic; apply a tourniquet for no longer than recommended (typically up to 1 minute).
Perform venipuncture and collect blood according to facility procedures, inserting blood collection tubes into the holder and maintaining sufficient pressure to ensure full vacuum draw.
Follow facility guidance regarding use of discard tubes for tests sensitive to underfilling.
After blood collection is complete, remove the device and promptly dispose of the luer adapter (and associated needle set) in an approved sharps/biohazard container.
Do not reuse or resterilise the luer adapter under any circumstances.

Contraindications

Do not use in patients or staff with known hypersensitivity to any component of the device (e.g., stainless steel, polypropylene) where such exposure is clinically relevant.
Not validated for use with arterial or venous catheters; should not be used for these applications.
Do not use if packaging is damaged, if the perforated label is broken before intended use, or if storage conditions have been exceeded.
Do not use after the indicated expiration date.
Device is specifically designed for use within the VACUETTE system; safety and performance are not confirmed when used with non-Greiner components.

Adverse Effects

As a blood collection accessory, potential indirect risks include needlestick injury and exposure to bloodborne pathogens (e.g., HIV, hepatitis viruses) if not handled and disposed of correctly.
Improper use may result in blood leakage or incomplete tube filling, which can lead to erroneous laboratory results and possible inappropriate clinical decisions.
Very rare risk of local reactions associated with venipuncture (e.g., bruising, haematoma, pain) related to the blood collection procedure rather than the adapter itself.
Reuse or resterilisation, contrary to instructions, may lead to cross-contamination and transmission of infectious diseases.

Storage Conditions

Store at 4–36 °C (40–97 °F).
Avoid exposure to direct sunlight.
Keep dry and within the recommended temperature range to avoid impairment of product performance.
Do not use if storage conditions have been exceeded or if packaging shows signs of damage.
Keep in original packaging until point of use and store out of reach of unauthorised personnel.
