Oral dosing syringes

Description

Precision Purple Oral Syringes 5ml are reusable, CE-marked, latex-free oral dosing syringes designed for accurate administration of liquid medicines. Supplied in a box of 50 syringes, each with a purple barrel (as recommended by the National Patient Safety Agency) to clearly distinguish them from intravenous or enteral syringes. The syringes include a bung to fit medicine bottles and an illustrated instruction booklet, feature 0.02 ml graduations for precise measurement, and a tipped plunger that clears the whole barrel so the full dose is delivered. They are washable, dishwasher safe and suitable for use across all age groups, especially children.

Bnefits

  • Provides precise measurement of liquid medicines with clearly marked 0.02 ml graduations.
  • Purple barrel colour helps prevent confusion with intravenous and enteral syringes, as recommended by the N.P.S.A.
  • Reusable and washable, including dishwasher safe, supporting cost-effective and sustainable use.
  • CE-marked and latex-free, supporting safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Plunger design clears the entire barrel to ensure the complete prescribed dose is administered.
  • Supplied with bung to minimise drips and spills when drawing medication from bottles.
  • Comes with a pictorial instruction booklet for easy, user-friendly operation.
  • Durable construction with graduations that do not rub off during normal use and cleaning.
  • Range of Precision sizes and custom printing options available for different dosage and branding needs.

Indications

  • Measurement and administration of liquid oral medicines in community and hospital pharmacy settings.
  • Dispensing medicines to children, adults and older patients where accurate, small-volume dosing is required.
  • Use in place of medicine spoons or cups when greater dosing precision and reduced spillage are needed.
  • Use by pharmacies and healthcare providers supplying oral medication with clear dosing tools for home use.

Composition

  • Medical-grade plastic barrel (purple coloured) with moulded 0.02 ml graduations.
  • Plastic plunger with tipped end designed to clear the entire internal barrel volume.
  • Latex-free materials in all patient/contact components.
  • Bottle bung supplied to fit standard medicine bottle necks for drip-free withdrawal of medicine.
  • Ink/markings formulated to be durable so graduations do not rub off with normal washing and reuse.

Formulation

  • 5 ml non-luer oral dosing syringe with purple barrel for oral use only (not compatible with injection devices).
  • Reusable, washable and dishwasher-safe construction designed for repeated use over time.
  • CE-marked oral dosing device, latex-free and suitable for patients with latex allergy.
  • Available as part of the Precision oral syringe range in multiple sizes, with optional custom printing (design, colour and graduation scales).

Packaging

  • Box of 50 x 5 ml Precision Purple Oral Syringes.
  • Supplied with bungs to fit medicine bottles to help prevent drips and spills.
  • Pictorial instruction booklet included to illustrate correct use and cleaning.
  • Outer carton branded as Precision / Valley Northern with product and size identification.

Usage

  • Use only for oral administration of liquid medicines; do not use for intravenous, enteral or injection purposes.
  • Before first use, wash the syringe components (barrel and plunger) in warm soapy water or in a dishwasher as recommended, then rinse and dry.
  • Fit the supplied bung or appropriate bottle adapter firmly into the neck of the medicine bottle if required.
  • Insert the syringe tip securely into the bung to avoid leaks, then invert or tilt the bottle so the tip is submerged in the liquid.
  • Gently pull back the plunger to draw the required dose, using the 0.02 ml graduations to measure at eye level.
  • Remove any air bubbles by tapping the syringe and gently expelling air, then re-draw medicine to the correct graduation if needed.
  • Place the tip of the syringe carefully into the patient’s mouth (towards the side of the cheek) and depress the plunger slowly to administer the dose.
  • After use, pull the plunger fully out of the barrel, wash both parts with warm water (and detergent if needed), rinse and allow to dry thoroughly before reuse.
  • Do not share syringes between different patients; dedicate a syringe to a single patient where infection control policies require it.
  • Inspect regularly for damage, stiffness or faded graduations and replace if any defect is noted.

Contraindications

  • Not for parenteral (intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous) or enteral feeding use.
  • Do not use if components are cracked, warped, discoloured or if graduations have become illegible.
  • Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the syringe materials, although the device is latex-free.
  • Do not use for measuring or administering substances outside the recommended temperature or chemical compatibility of medical-grade plastic (e.g., highly corrosive or solvent-based liquids).

Adverse Effects

  • When used correctly as an oral dosing device, no direct adverse effects are expected.
  • Incorrect technique (e.g., squirting medicine too quickly towards the back of the throat) may increase risk of coughing or choking, particularly in young children.
  • Use of a damaged or contaminated syringe may increase risk of inaccurate dosing or cross-infection if shared between patients.

Storage Conditions

  • Store clean, dry syringes in a closed container or drawer away from dust and contaminants.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or excessive heat that may degrade plastic components or printed graduations.
  • Ensure syringes are fully dry before storage to minimise microbial growth.
  • Keep out of reach of children when not in supervised use.
  • Follow local infection-control policies regarding maximum recommended reuse period or replacement frequency.

Duration

Not applicable; the syringe is a reusable administration device and may be used for each prescribed oral dose as directed by a healthcare professional for as long as it remains in good condition.

Onset

Not applicable; onset depends on the medicine being administered, not the syringe.
