Disposable instant ice pack for first aid and sports injuries

Description

Relief Instant Mini Ice Pack 30cm x 13cm is a single-use, disposable cold pack designed to provide immediate on-the-spot ice therapy without the need for pre-cooling. Manufactured by Reliance Medical under the Relief brand, this compact pack is free from ammonium nitrate and is very economical in use, making it ideal for inclusion in first aid kits, workplace safety stations and sports bags. Once activated by twisting and squeezing to break the inner pouch, the pack rapidly becomes ice-cold and is applied directly over a protective layer to bruises, sprains, strains, muscle injuries and minor soft-tissue trauma. It is commonly used in sports, occupational first aid and post-procedure settings to help reduce pain, swelling and inflammation.

Bnefits

• Provides instant cold therapy without the need for refrigeration or pre-cooling.
• Single-use, disposable design for quick and hygienic first aid response.
• Free from ammonium nitrate, providing a safer and more environmentally considerate alternative to older cold pack formulations.
• Very economical in use, making it suitable for stocking in first aid kits, sports clubs and clinics.
• Helps reduce pain, swelling and inflammation following sprains, strains, bruises and minor soft-tissue injuries.
• Ideal sports product for pitch-side or training use where immediate cold therapy is required.
• Compact and lightweight, allowing easy storage and transport in first aid bags and kit boxes.
• Simple activation (twist and squeeze) allows rapid application by both trained first aiders and lay users under guidance.

Indications

• Immediate cold therapy for acute soft-tissue injuries such as sprains and strains.
• Bruising and contusions from minor trauma or sports injuries.
• Muscle injuries and overuse-related soreness requiring short-term cooling.
• First aid management of minor bumps, knocks and abrasions where cooling is appropriate.
• Supportive cold therapy after some minor medical or aesthetic procedures, as directed by a healthcare professional.
• Inclusion in general first aid kits for workplaces, schools, sports clubs and home use.

Composition

• Outer flexible plastic pouch containing an inner liquid compartment and a separate compartment with solid cooling agent.
• Non-toxic cooling medium free from ammonium nitrate (exact chemical composition not publicly specified by the manufacturer).
• Water-based solution within the main chamber (exact formulation not specified).
• Plastic laminate film for leak-resistant, durable construction.

Formulation

• Single-use, disposable chemical cold pack activated by rupturing an internal sachet and mixing contents.
• Instant endothermic reaction provides rapid cooling for local cold therapy.
• Pack size approximately 30cm x 13cm, suitable for covering common injury areas such as ankles, knees, wrists and forearms.
• Designed for short-duration, localised application over an appropriate barrier (such as a cloth or sleeve) to reduce risk of cold injury.
• Free from ammonium nitrate to align with modern safety and transport requirements.

Packaging

• Individually sealed disposable ice pack labelled as Relief Instant Mini Ice Pack 30cm x 13cm (product code 710).
• Supplied as single units via retail channels (e.g. Medisave) and also available in multi-pack or case quantities through wholesale and first aid catalogue suppliers.
• Robust outer carton or shipping packaging used for bulk orders to medical and first aid distributors.
• Suitable size for inclusion in BS-compliant first aid kits and sports first aid bags.

Usage

• Check the pack for any visible damage or leaks before use; do not use if damaged.
• To activate, twist or firmly squeeze the pack until the inner sachet breaks and the contents mix; you may hear or feel the inner bag rupture.
• Shake the pack vigorously to ensure thorough mixing and full activation of the cooling reaction.
• Wrap the activated pack in a thin cloth, sleeve or dressing cover before applying to the skin to prevent cold burns or frostbite.
• Apply to the affected area (e.g. bruising, sprain, strain or muscle injury) for approximately 10–20 minutes at a time, or as directed by a healthcare professional.
• Monitor the skin frequently; discontinue use if excessive redness, numbness, pain or discomfort occurs.
• Do not apply to broken or diseased skin, open wounds, or areas with poor circulation unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional.
• Dispose of the pack responsibly as general waste after single use; do not attempt to re-freeze or reuse.
• Keep out of reach of children and ensure use is supervised when applied to paediatric patients.
• In the event of leakage, avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes; rinse thoroughly with water and seek medical advice if irritation persists.

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity or adverse reaction to cold therapy (e.g. cold urticaria or cold-induced wheals).
• Patients with severe circulatory problems, peripheral vascular disease or conditions where reduced blood flow may be harmful, unless advised by a clinician.
• Application over areas of impaired skin sensation where the patient cannot feel excessive cold.
• Use directly on broken skin, open wounds, active dermatitis or infected areas.
• Use in individuals with cryoglobulinaemia, Raynaud’s phenomenon or other cold-intolerance conditions without medical guidance.
• Prolonged continuous application without adequate skin monitoring, which may increase the risk of cold injury.

Adverse Effects

• Temporary skin redness, numbness or discomfort at the application site.
• Cold burns or frostbite if applied directly to the skin without a protective barrier or used for excessive duration.
• Skin irritation or contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals, particularly if leaking contents contact the skin.
• Rare local allergic-type reactions to pack materials or leaked contents.
• If the pack leaks and contents contact eyes or mucous membranes, irritation or stinging may occur and require rinsing and medical assessment.

Storage Conditions

• Store at room temperature in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
• Do not puncture, crush or expose the pack to sharp objects prior to use.
• Do not freeze or refrigerate, as the product is designed for chemical activation at ambient temperature.
• Keep in original packaging or first aid kit compartment until required to protect from accidental activation or damage.
• Keep out of the reach of children except when being used under adult supervision.

Duration

Typically used for 10–20 minutes per application, repeated as needed every 1–2 hours during the first 24–48 hours after an acute injury, or as directed by local first aid protocols or a healthcare professional.

Onset

Cooling effect begins within seconds to a minute after activation and shaking, providing rapid cold therapy to the applied area.
