Disposable instant ice pack for first aid and sports injuries

Description

The Relief Mini Instant Ice Pack is a compact, single-use cold pack designed to provide fast, on-the-spot ice therapy without the need for refrigeration. Manufactured by Reliance Medical under the Relief brand, this 100 g mini pack is free from ammonium nitrate, very economical in use and sized perfectly for inclusion in first aid kits and sports bags. Once activated by twisting or squeezing to rupture the internal sachet, the pack rapidly becomes ice-cold and is applied over a protective barrier to bruising, sports sprains, muscle injuries and minor soft-tissue trauma. It is widely used in sports, workplace first aid, schools and clinics to help reduce pain and swelling immediately after injury, and can also be used post-procedure where cold therapy is recommended by a healthcare professional.

Bnefits

• Provides instant cold therapy without the need for prior refrigeration or freezing.
• Mini 100 g format is compact and economical, ideal for first aid kits and sports bags.
• Free from ammonium nitrate, offering a safer alternative to older instant cold pack formulations.
• Single-use, disposable design ensures hygienic, low-maintenance first aid use.
• Helps reduce pain, swelling and inflammation following acute soft-tissue injuries such as sprains, strains and bruises.
• Ideal for sports environments, schools, workplaces and general first aid applications.
• Simple activation by twisting or squeezing, allowing rapid response in emergencies.
• Suitable for supplementing post-procedure care where cold therapy is recommended by clinicians (e.g. minor aesthetic or dermatologic treatments).

Indications

• Immediate cold therapy for acute soft-tissue injuries, including sprains and strains.
• Bruising and contusions following minor trauma or sports injuries.
• Muscle injuries, knocks and overuse soreness requiring short-term cooling.
• First aid treatment of sprains and abrasions as part of RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) principles.
• General first aid situations where localised cooling is appropriate and recommended.
• Adjunctive cooling after minor medical or aesthetic procedures when directed by a healthcare professional.

Composition

• Outer flexible plastic pouch with dual internal chambers (liquid and solid components) that mix on activation.
• Non-toxic cooling medium specifically formulated to be free from ammonium nitrate (exact chemical formulation not publicly disclosed by the manufacturer).
• Water-based solution within the main compartment (exact composition not specified).
• Durable plastic laminate film designed to resist puncture and minimise risk of leakage during normal use.

Formulation

• Single-use chemical cold pack that activates via an endothermic reaction when the inner sachet is ruptured.
• Mini 100 g pack providing a compact cooling area suitable for smaller injury sites or paediatric use.
• Designed to deliver short-term local cold therapy when applied over an appropriate barrier to protect the skin.
• Free from ammonium nitrate to enhance safety in storage, transport and disposal.
• Optimised for rapid activation and reliable cooling performance for first aid applications.

Packaging

• Individually sealed mini instant ice pack, labelled as Relief Mini Instant Ice Pack, 100 g (SKU 7710 / RM7710).
• Pack dimensions commonly listed as approximately 15 cm × 13 cm, suitable for covering common injury areas such as ankles, wrists and small joints.
• Retail and distribution formats include single units and packs of 10 (e.g. 100 g – Pack of 10) supplied to clinics, workplaces and sports clubs.
• Bulk orders shipped in outer cartons for stockrooms and medical supply stores; single units sized for easy inclusion in BS-style first aid kits and sports first aid bags.

Usage

• Inspect the pack before use; do not use if the outer pouch is damaged or leaking.
• To activate, twist, squeeze or firmly press the pack until the inner sachet ruptures and contents mix (you may feel or hear the inner bag burst).
• Shake the pack well to ensure the chemicals mix thoroughly and the cooling reaction is fully activated.
• Always place a thin cloth, gauze or other protective barrier between the pack and the skin to reduce the risk of cold burns or frostbite.
• Apply to the affected area (e.g. bruising, sprain, strain or muscle injury) for around 10–20 minutes, or as advised by a first aider or healthcare professional.
• Check the skin regularly during application; discontinue use if there is excessive redness, numbness, pain or discomfort.
• Do not apply directly to broken skin, open wounds, active skin conditions or areas with impaired circulation unless specifically instructed by a clinician.
• Use only once; after use, dispose of the pack in normal household or clinical waste according to local policies.
• Keep out of reach of children and ensure that use on children is supervised by an adult or trained first aider.
• If the pack leaks and contents contact skin, eyes or mucous membranes, rinse thoroughly with clean water and seek medical advice if irritation persists.

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity or intolerance to cold (e.g. cold urticaria, cold-induced wheals).
• Use on patients with severe circulatory problems or peripheral vascular disease without medical supervision.
• Application to areas with significantly reduced or absent sensation where the patient cannot feel excessive cold.
• Use directly on broken, infected or extensively damaged skin without a protective dressing and medical guidance.
• Patients with cryoglobulinaemia, Raynaud’s phenomenon or other cold-sensitivity disorders should only use under medical advice.
• Prolonged or repeated application without adequate breaks or skin monitoring, which may increase risk of cold injury.

Adverse Effects

• Transient skin redness, numbness or discomfort at the application site.
• Cold burns or frostbite if applied directly to the skin without a barrier or used for excessive duration.
• Local skin irritation or mild contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals, especially if contents leak.
• Rare hypersensitivity-type reactions to pack materials or leaked contents.
• Eye or mucosal irritation if the contents accidentally leak and come into contact with eyes, mouth or nose (requiring thorough rinsing and medical assessment if symptoms persist).

Storage Conditions

• Store at room temperature in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
• Do not refrigerate or freeze; the pack is designed for chemical activation at ambient temperature.
• Keep in its original packaging or designated first aid kit compartment to avoid accidental activation or puncture.
• Do not pierce, crush or tamper with the pack before intended use.
• Keep out of the sight and reach of children except when being used under appropriate supervision.

Duration

Commonly applied for 10–20 minutes per session, repeated every 1–2 hours during the first 24–48 hours after an acute injury as part of standard first aid practice, or according to the advice of a healthcare professional.

Onset

Cooling effect begins within seconds to a minute after activation and shaking, providing rapid local cold therapy once applied.
