Usage
- Before first use, clean and, if required by local policy, steam sterilize the tray (up to 134°C) according to the facility’s decontamination procedures and manufacturer guidance.
- Place the appropriate Sharpak Compact or Sharpak 18 PLUS sharps container into the shaped recess of the tray, ensuring it is stable and correctly seated.
- Arrange the required procedure materials (e.g., syringes, needles, swabs) within the tray so that used sharps can be disposed of directly into the container at the point of use.
- During procedures at the bedside or in treatment rooms, keep the tray positioned close to the patient to minimize the distance sharps are carried prior to disposal.
- After the procedure, ensure all used sharps are safely deposited into the sharps container and that the container is secured in accordance with local sharps policy (e.g., temporary or final closure).
- Transport the tray with the sharps container carefully, making use of the deep sides and stable base to reduce the risk of spillage or tipping.
- After use and once the sharps container has been removed, clean and disinfect the tray using an approved detergent/disinfectant or reprocess according to local infection prevention and manufacturer recommendations.
- Inspect the tray regularly for cracks, warping or other damage; remove from service and replace if structural integrity is compromised.
Contraindications
- Not intended for use with sharps containers other than compatible Sharpak Compact and Sharpak 18 PLUS units where a secure fit cannot be assured.
- Do not use if the tray is cracked, warped, or otherwise damaged, as this may compromise stability and safety.
- Not designed to support loads significantly in excess of typical sharps container and procedure materials; avoid overloading the tray.
Adverse Effects
- No direct clinical adverse effects are associated with the tray itself when used as intended.
- Improper use, overloading, or use with incompatible sharps containers could increase the risk of spills or dropped sharps, potentially contributing to needlestick injuries.
Storage Conditions
- Store the tray in a clean, dry environment when not in use.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to excessive heat (outside sterilization processes), direct sunlight, or harsh chemicals that may degrade the material.
- Do not stack heavy objects on top of trays in a way that could cause warping or physical damage.
Duration
Not applicable; the tray is a reusable accessory used during procedures and for transport and handling of sharps rather than a time-limited treatment.
Onset
Immediate; once the tray is set up with the compatible sharps container and procedure materials, it provides a safe surface for near-patient sharps handling and disposal.
