Respiratory Protection / FFP2 Disposable Respirators

Description

The 3M™ Disposable Respirator Face Mask 8822 is a classic, cup-shaped FFP2 valved filtering half mask designed to provide effective protection against hazardous dusts and mists. It features a robust, collapse-resistant shell, 3M™ Cool Flow™ exhalation valve, adjustable nose clip and soft nose foam. Colour-coded blue headbands identify the FFP2 protection level (APF 10 / NPF 12). Supplied in a box of 10 masks and suitable for use in healthcare, laboratory, industrial and construction environments, as well as clinical and aesthetic settings where FFP2 respiratory protection is required.

Bnefits

  • Provides certified FFP2 particulate protection against medium levels of fine dusts and oil or water-based mists.
  • 3M™ Cool Flow™ exhalation valve helps reduce heat and moisture build-up inside the mask, improving comfort, especially in hot or humid conditions.
  • Durable, collapse-resistant inner shell and convex cup-shaped design maintain shape and fit during extended wear.
  • Adjustable nose clip and soft nose foam help achieve a close, comfortable seal across a broad range of face sizes and reduce fogging of eyewear.
  • Colour-coded blue headbands allow quick visual identification of FFP2 protection level (APF 10 / NPF 12).
  • Advanced electret filter media is designed to make breathing easier while maintaining filtration efficiency.
  • Lightweight twin-strap design with headbands positioned for a stable, secure fit.
  • Maximum usage level up to 12 × TLV (depending on national regulations and fit-testing), giving a wide operating range for many tasks.
  • Compatible with most 3M eyewear and hearing protection products, supporting integrated PPE solutions.
  • From a globally recognised PPE manufacturer with long-established performance and quality standards.

Indications

  • Respiratory protection for workers exposed to hazardous dusts and non-volatile liquid mists in industrial, construction, laboratory and maintenance environments.
  • Use in healthcare and clinical settings, including infection-prevention scenarios where FFP2-level respiratory protection is indicated.
  • Protection for staff in aesthetic and dermatology clinics performing aerosol-generating or close-contact procedures where enhanced respiratory protection is recommended.
  • Tasks such as sanding, grinding, cutting, drilling, mixing, or handling powdered materials within the certified limits of FFP2 protection.
  • Situations where single-use, maintenance-free respirators are preferred over reusable half masks.

Composition

  • Cup-shaped filtering facepiece constructed from multiple layers of non-woven polypropylene (advanced electret filter media).
  • Integrated 3M™ Cool Flow™ exhalation valve housing with plastic body and valve diaphragm.
  • Adjustable metal nose clip embedded in the mask shell.
  • Soft polyurethane or similar foam nose cushion on the inside of the nose area.
  • Elastic textile headbands (colour-coded blue for FFP2) attached via staple points to the mask body.

Formulation

  • FFP2 NR D disposable filtering half mask respirator with exhalation valve.
  • Meets FFP2 performance requirements for filtering half masks against particles under EN 149:2001+A1:2009.
  • Assigned Protection Factor (APF) typically 10; Nominal Protection Factor (NPF) 12 (regional guidance may vary).
  • Non-reusable (NR) design intended for single shift/use, subject to local regulations and contamination level.

Packaging

  • Box quantity: 10 individual 3M 8822 FFP2 valved respirators.
  • Each respirator individually packed or nested within the box (depending on production batch) with user information leaflet.
  • Case configuration (manufacturer): typically 24 boxes per case (240 respirators) for bulk distribution.
  • Medisave listing: Box of 10, regular price approximately £37.19 including VAT (pricing may vary over time and by retailer).

Usage

  • Before use, check the respirator and valve for any damage or deformation; do not use a damaged mask.
  • Cup the respirator in one hand with the nose clip at fingertips and straps hanging below.
  • Place the respirator under the chin with the nose clip over the nose, then pull the top strap over the head and position it high on the back of the head.
  • Pull the bottom strap over the head and position it around the neck, below the ears, ensuring straps are not twisted.
  • Using both hands, mould the nose clip to the shape of the nose to ensure a close seal; do not pinch with one hand only as this can compromise the fit.
  • Perform a fit check every time the respirator is worn (for example, cover the mask with both hands and exhale sharply; check for leakage around the nose or edges and readjust as needed).
  • Do not wear with facial hair or other conditions that prevent an effective seal between the face and the respirator.
  • Replace the respirator if it becomes damaged, visibly soiled, difficult to breathe through, or if you leave the contaminated area for a prolonged period.
  • Follow workplace procedures and national guidelines regarding maximum wear time and fit testing for tight-fitting respirators.
  • After use, remove the respirator by handling the straps only, avoiding contact with the potentially contaminated front surface, and dispose of it according to local regulations for contaminated waste.

Contraindications

  • Not suitable for individuals who cannot achieve an adequate fit (e.g., due to certain facial hair styles, facial deformities or incompatible PPE).
  • Not intended for use in atmospheres containing less than 19.5% oxygen or for protection against gases and vapours; only for particulate hazards as specified.
  • Not to be used in explosive atmospheres or where unknown or immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) concentrations of contaminants may be present.
  • Should not be used by persons with certain respiratory or cardiac conditions without medical advice, due to the additional breathing resistance.
  • Do not use beyond the assigned protection factor or maximum usage level (e.g., > 10 × WES or > 12 × TLV depending on local regulations).

Adverse Effects

  • Possible discomfort, heat build-up or increased breathing resistance during prolonged use.
  • Potential for pressure marks, irritation or redness on the nose or face from the nose clip, foam or headbands.
  • If not fitted correctly, leakage around the seal can reduce protection and may provide a false sense of security.
  • In rare cases, hypersensitivity or contact irritation to mask materials or nose foam.
  • Wearing tight-fitting respirators may exacerbate underlying respiratory or cardiovascular conditions in susceptible individuals.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a clean, dry environment away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures and high humidity.
  • Keep in original packaging until use to protect from dust, physical damage and contamination.
  • Recommended storage temperature and humidity should follow the manufacturer’s technical data sheet (typically within a moderate temperature range and below high relative humidity).
  • Do not store near solvents, oils or chemicals that could degrade plastic components or strap elasticity.
  • Observe the expiry date printed on the packaging; do not use respirators beyond their marked shelf life.

Duration

Single-use, non-reusable respirator typically worn for a single work shift or until it becomes damaged, soiled, or breathing resistance increases noticeably, in line with EN 149:2001+A1:2009 and local guidance.

Onset

Immediate respiratory protection is provided once the respirator is correctly fitted and an adequate face seal is achieved.
