Professional medical and work clogs
Description
The Birkenstock Kay SL Cat & Dog Clog in Birko-Flor is a professional Super Grip model that combines the key features of BIRKENSTOCK’s classic Tokio and Boston occupational clogs in a playful cat and dog print design. The dual-strap upper features an instep strap that can be folded back to act as a backstrap, providing additional rearfoot support and a secure fit when needed. The anatomically shaped cork-latex footbed, lined with soft suede, supports the natural anatomy of the foot and promotes proper posture, helping to protect joints and tendons during long shifts. The Super Grip two-component sole consists of a highly shock-absorbing EVA midsole and a nonslip rubber outsole that is oil- and grease-resistant and tested for slip resistance in accordance with EN ISO 20347:2012, rated in the top SRC category. Comfortable, supportive and secure, the Kay SL Cat & Dog clog is particularly popular in medical environments, practices, hospitals, kitchens and gastronomy where flexibility, sure-footedness and easy-care materials are essential.

- Retail packaging features Birkenstock branding, size, width, colour/pattern information and care instructions
Usage
- Select the appropriate size and width (narrow) using Birkenstock’s sizing guide to ensure the foot is well supported within the footbed without pressing against the raised edges.
- Adjust the metal pin buckles on the upper straps to achieve a secure yet comfortable fit over the instep.
- Wear the instep strap forward as a standard clog or fold it back to act as a heel strap when additional rearfoot security is required.
- Use as everyday occupational footwear during work shifts in medical, care, kitchen or gastronomy environments, following workplace PPE and footwear guidelines.
- Clean the Birko-Flor upper with a damp cloth and mild soap solution if necessary; avoid harsh solvents or scouring agents that could damage the finish.
- Allow shoes to air dry at room temperature; do not place them on radiators, near open flames or in direct intense sunlight, as excessive heat can damage cork, EVA and adhesives.
- Brush the suede footbed lightly with a soft brush to remove dust and help maintain texture; avoid soaking the footbed to prevent cork damage.
- Periodically inspect the tread on the rubber outsole for wear; replace the shoes when slip resistance is visibly compromised or the tread is significantly worn.
- If the cork edge appears dry, a suitable cork sealant may be used according to Birkenstock care recommendations to protect and prolong the life of the footbed.
- Store shoes in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area when not in use to preserve materials and footbed shape.
Contraindications
- Not suitable as safety footwear where EN ISO 20345-certified protective-toe or additional protective features (e.g. puncture-resistant midsoles) are specifically required.
- May not be appropriate for individuals with very wide feet or significant foot deformities without professional fitting advice, as this model is supplied in a narrow fit.
- Users with known allergies or sensitivities to synthetic materials (PVC/Birko-Flor), leather, adhesives or rubber components should avoid use.
- Use with caution in individuals with severe neuropathy, significant circulatory disorders or advanced diabetic foot problems without professional footwear assessment.
- Do not continue to wear clogs that are damaged, excessively worn or have significantly diminished tread, as safety and slip resistance may be compromised.
Adverse Effects
- If incorrectly sized or adjusted, the clogs may cause rubbing, pressure points or blisters on toes, instep or heel.
- Inadequate arch support relative to an individual’s specific biomechanical needs may contribute to foot, knee, hip or back discomfort over time.
- Insufficient sock hygiene or inadequate cleaning of the footbed can contribute to foot odour or superficial skin irritation.
- In rare cases, contact dermatitis or irritation can occur due to sensitivity to Birko-Flor, leather, rubber or cleaning agents used on the shoes.
- Worn or contaminated outsoles may reduce slip resistance and increase the risk of slips and falls in demanding environments.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight when not in use.
- Keep away from strong heat sources such as radiators, heaters or open flames that may deform the cork, EVA or rubber components.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to solvents, oils or aggressive chemicals that may degrade Birko-Flor, cork or rubber.
- Allow shoes to dry completely after exposure to moisture before storing to prevent mould growth and material deterioration.
- Do not stack heavy items on top of the clogs to avoid distortion of the upper or compression of the cork-latex footbed.
Duration
Not applicable as a medical treatment; intended for ongoing daily occupational use for as long as the clogs remain structurally sound and maintain adequate comfort and slip resistance.
Onset
Comfort, arch support and slip-resistant benefits are experienced immediately upon correct fitting and wear; longer-term benefits for reduced fatigue and joint strain depend on regular use during work shifts.
