Professional PU work clogs for medical and food-industry use

Description

The Birkenstock Profi-Birki Clog - Polyurethane is a professional occupational shoe designed to deliver secure footing, comfort and hygiene in demanding work environments such as hospitals, clinics, kitchens and the food industry. Molded in a single piece from durable, skin-friendly polyurethane (PU), the clog features a raised heel section and extended front that enclose the whole foot and promote a natural rolling motion with every step. The nonslip PU outsole is optimised for smooth floor surfaces, while the oil- and grease-resistant upper and sole are washable at up to 80°C for outstanding hygiene. Inside, a removable, anatomically shaped PU footbed with fabric lining supports the foot’s natural anatomy, helping reduce fatigue and protect joints during long shifts. The footbed can be washed at up to 60°C and disinfected, and replaced when worn. All Profi-Birki models are certified as occupational footwear in accordance with EN ISO 20347:2012 OB E (SRB category), confirming slip resistance, energy absorption in the heel and suitability for professional use.

Usage

  • Select the correct size and width according to Birkenstock’s sizing guidance so that the foot is securely held without excessive pressure on the toes or sides.
  • Ensure the removable PU footbed is correctly seated inside the clog before wear.
  • Wear with appropriate work socks as required by workplace hygiene and comfort practices.
  • Use as everyday occupational footwear for shifts in healthcare, kitchens, food industry or similar environments, in line with workplace PPE and footwear regulations.
  • For cleaning the clog body: remove the footbed, then wash the PU clog under running water or in an appropriate washing system at temperatures up to 80°C using suitable mild detergent; rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry away from direct heat sources.
  • For cleaning the removable footbed: wash separately by hand or gentle machine cycle at temperatures up to 60°C; allow to dry completely at room temperature before reinserting into the clog.
  • Both clog body and footbed can be disinfected using disinfectants compatible with PU and textile materials, following manufacturer and infection-control guidelines.
  • Inspect the outsole regularly for wear or damage; replace the clogs or footbeds when the tread is significantly worn or when comfort and support are reduced.
  • Do not modify the clogs or replace the Profi-Birki footbed with non-compatible inserts if EN ISO 20347 certification and performance must be maintained.
  • Avoid exposing the clogs to strong heat sources (radiators, open flames) or aggressive chemicals (strong solvents, acids, alkalis) that may degrade the PU material.

Contraindications

  • Not suitable as safety footwear where EN ISO 20345-certified protective-toe or additional safety features (e.g. steel toe caps, puncture-resistant midsoles) are explicitly required.
  • May not be appropriate for individuals with significant foot deformities, very narrow or very wide feet, or complex orthotic requirements without professional fitting advice.
  • Users with known allergies or sensitivities to polyurethane, certain textiles or cleaning/disinfection agents should avoid use or seek specialist advice.
  • Use with caution in individuals with severe peripheral neuropathy, advanced diabetic foot complications or severe circulatory disorders without professional footwear assessment.
  • Do not use clogs that show visible damage (cracks, tears, sole separation) or severely worn outsoles, as protective and slip-resistant properties may be compromised.

Adverse Effects

  • If incorrectly sized, clogs may cause pressure, rubbing or blisters on toes, heel or instep.
  • Inadequate arch support for a specific individual’s biomechanics may contribute to foot, knee, hip or back discomfort over time.
  • Insufficient cleaning and drying may promote foot odour or superficial skin irritation.
  • Rarely, contact irritation or dermatitis may occur in users sensitive to PU, textile linings or cleaning products used on the shoes.
  • Reduced slip resistance due to worn or contaminated outsoles may increase the risk of slips and falls despite the shoe’s SRB classification.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight when not in use.
  • Keep away from strong heat sources such as radiators, heaters or open flames that may deform or damage the PU material.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to solvents, oils, strong acids, alkalis or aggressive cleaning chemicals that may degrade polyurethane or textile linings.
  • Allow clogs and footbeds to dry completely after washing or disinfection before storing or wearing again to prevent mould and material deterioration.
  • Do not stack heavy objects on top of the clogs to avoid distortion of the upper or permanent compression of the footbed.

Duration

Not applicable as a medical treatment; intended for continuous daily occupational use for as long as the clogs and footbeds remain in good condition and retain their certified safety and hygiene properties.

Onset

Comfort, support and nonslip performance are provided immediately upon correct fitting and first use; long-term benefits in terms of reduced fatigue and improved comfort develop with regular wear over extended working periods.
