Biohazard spill kit \u2013 midi (up to 10 spills)

Description

The Biohazard Spill Kit (Midi / 10 Spills) is a multiple-use kit from GV Health designed for the safe containment, clean-up and disinfection of up to 10 biohazard spillages. Supplied in a robust, bright yellow hard case with wall mount, it contains SoChlor NaDCC chlorine-release absorbent granules and SoChlor TAB chlorine tablets, along with PPE and tools, to manage spills of blood and other high-risk body fluids. The granules rapidly absorb the spill and release chlorine disinfectant to inactivate pathogens on contact, while the tablets are diluted to a 10,000 ppm chlorine solution for thorough area disinfection, fully effective against blood-borne pathogens and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB). The kit is intended for high-risk environments such as emergency departments, larger clinical areas and other busy settings where biohazard spillages may occur frequently, and is safe for use by non-specialist staff and first-aiders. GV Health spill kits hold the NHS Supply Chain contract for biohazard kits and are widely used throughout NHS hospitals, clinics, laboratories, ambulances, dental and veterinary practices, nursing homes, schools, offices, transport and other public or commercial environments.

Composition

  • SoChlor NaDCC chlorine-release absorbent granules (active ingredient: Sodium dichloroisocyanurate, NaDCC).
  • SoChlor TAB 2.5 g chlorine tablets (NaDCC) for preparation of 10,000 ppm chlorine disinfectant solution.
  • Nitrile examination gloves (approx. 10 pairs).
  • Disposable protective aprons (approx. 10).
  • Cardboard scoops and scrapers (approx. 10 sets).
  • Clinical waste bags (approx. 10) for safe disposal of contaminated materials.
  • SoChlor dilution bottle (1 litre) with fill line for tablet solution preparation.
  • Paper towels or absorbent tissues (in some distributor configurations).
  • Illustrated step-by-step instruction poster and record/incident card.
  • Hard-sided, bright yellow plastic case with integrated or supplied wall-mount bracket.

Formulation

  • Multi-use spill-response kit combining chlorine-based biocidal chemistry (NaDCC granules and tablets) with single-use PPE and clean-up tools.
  • SoChlor NaDCC granules: high-absorbency carrier granules impregnated with NaDCC that absorb liquid and release chlorine disinfectant directly into the spill.
  • SoChlor TAB: 2.5 g NaDCC tablets designed to be dissolved in water in the supplied diluter to specified concentrations (e.g. 10,000 ppm) for surface disinfection.
  • Chlorine chemistry meets a wide range of European efficacy test standards for bactericidal, fungicidal, virucidal, mycobactericidal and sporicidal activity when used as directed.
  • Kit design follows best-practice infection-control protocols to minimize user exposure and cross-contamination during spill management.

Packaging

  • Hard-sided, lightweight bright yellow case designed for portability and easy storage.
  • Case sized to contain all components securely, with clear external labelling for quick identification as a biohazard spill kit.
  • Supplied with wall-mount bracket or compatible with wall mounting for prominent placement in clinical or public areas.
  • Internal layout accommodates SoChlor tablet tube, 500 g SoChlor granule shaker, diluter bottle, PPE, tools and documentation.
  • Outer shipping cartons used for bulk supply to hospitals, distributors and NHS Supply Chain depots.

Usage

  • Assess the spill area and restrict access; don the supplied PPE (apron and nitrile gloves) before approaching the spill.
  • Sprinkle SoChlor NaDCC absorbent granules evenly over the spill to cover the liquid completely and leave in contact for at least 2 minutes (or as instructed) to absorb and disinfect.
  • While the granules are acting, prepare the SoChlor TAB disinfectant solution: place the specified number of tablets in the diluter bottle according to the dilution chart (e.g. to achieve 10,000 ppm), fill with water to the marked fill line and allow tablets to dissolve fully (do not shake).
  • Using the cardboard scoop and scraper, collect the saturated granules and other solid contaminated material and place them into the clinical waste bag provided.
  • Use paper towels and the prepared SoChlor TAB solution to clean the affected area thoroughly, removing any remaining residues and smears, and ensuring sufficient contact time for disinfection.
  • Place all used towels, scoops, scrapers, PPE and other disposable items into the clinical waste bag; remove gloves last, tie or seal the bag securely and dispose of it via the appropriate clinical waste stream in line with local policy.
  • Complete the enclosed record card with incident details according to local infection-control and health-and-safety procedures.
  • Wash or sanitize hands after removal of PPE.
  • Use biocides safely: always read the SoChlor product labels, safety data sheets and the illustrated instruction poster before use.
  • Do not use the kit on chemical spills or urine/vomit spills (separate chemical or urine/vomit spill kits should be used for those).

Contraindications

  • Not to be used on chemical spills, or on urine and vomit spills (dedicated chemical or urine/vomit spill kits are required).
  • Not suitable for direct application to skin, wounds or mucous membranes; avoid contact with eyes.
  • Do not ingest granules, tablets or prepared solution.
  • Do not mix chlorine solutions with acids, ammonia or other incompatible chemicals, as this may release hazardous gases.
  • Individuals with known hypersensitivity to chlorine, NaDCC or components of the PPE (e.g. nitrile) should avoid use or use alternative PPE as per local policy.
  • Use only in well-ventilated areas and avoid breathing dust from granules or vapours from concentrated solutions.

Adverse Effects

  • Contact with skin may cause irritation, dryness or, in sensitised individuals, allergic contact reactions; prolonged or repeated exposure should be minimized.
  • Eye contact with granules, tablets or solution may cause irritation, redness or pain and requires immediate rinsing with plenty of water and medical advice if symptoms persist.
  • Inhalation of dust from NaDCC granules or aerosols from solution may cause respiratory irritation in sensitive individuals.
  • Accidental ingestion can cause irritation of the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract and requires prompt medical attention.
  • Improper use or inadequate PPE may increase risk of exposure to infectious material or chlorine-based disinfectants.

Storage Conditions

  • Store the kit in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
  • Keep SoChlor NaDCC granules and tablets tightly closed in their original containers within the case to protect from moisture.
  • Keep away from acids, ammonia and other incompatible chemicals.
  • Ensure the kit is mounted or stored in an easily accessible but secure location, out of reach of unauthorised persons and children.
  • Follow any additional storage recommendations given in the SoChlor Safety Data Sheets and on the product labels.

Duration

Each kit is designed to treat and safely disinfect up to 10 individual biohazard spill events. For each spill, granules should remain on the spill for at least a few minutes (typically around 2 minutes or as per instructions) before removal, and the chlorine solution should be left on surfaces for the recommended contact time according to local protocols and product guidance.

Onset

SoChlor NaDCC granules begin absorbing and releasing active chlorine disinfectant immediately upon contact with the spill, with effective microbial kill typically achieved within minutes of appropriate contact at 10,000 ppm. The prepared SoChlor TAB solution provides rapid high-level disinfection of treated surfaces within the contact times validated in EN test standards.
