Children\u2019s reusable hot and cold gel pack

Description

Elly the Elephant Hot & Cold Gel Pack is a reusable children’s hot and cold therapy pack from Koolpak, designed in a fun elephant character shape to help comfort and distract young patients while providing effective relief from minor injuries. The compact 11 × 12 cm gel pack can be used either chilled or warmed to quickly relieve pain and swelling from everyday bumps and bruises, minor soft tissue injuries, headaches or minor burns. The non-toxic gel (carbomer, glycerol and water) is sealed in a flexible, child-friendly plastic pouch that conforms to smaller limbs, making it suitable for home, school, sports and general first-aid use when supervised by an adult.

Bnefits

  • Quickly relieves pain and swelling from minor injuries such as bumps and bruises.
  • Ideal for soothing discomfort caused by headaches or minor burns when used as directed.
  • Dual-purpose design – can be used either cold (from fridge/freezer) or warm (after heating in hot water).
  • Reusable pack offers an economical and environmentally friendly alternative to single-use cold packs.
  • Child-friendly elephant design helps to distract and comfort children, encouraging them to keep the pack in place.
  • Compact size (approximately 11 × 12 cm, ~100 g) is designed for smaller limbs and easy handling by children and carers.
  • Non-toxic gel formulation (carbomer, glycerol and water) when used as directed and kept inside the intact pouch.
  • Suitable for use in a wide range of settings, including home first aid kits, schools, nurseries, sports clubs and clinics.

Indications

  • First aid treatment of minor bumps and bruises in children.
  • Relief of pain and swelling associated with minor soft tissue injuries such as small sprains or strains when cold therapy is appropriate.
  • Soothing relief of headaches or minor head bumps (with appropriate assessment and supervision).
  • Adjunctive relief for minor burns or scalds once appropriate initial first-aid cooling has been carried out and as advised by a healthcare professional.
  • General hot and cold therapy for minor aches and pains where local temperature therapy is recommended.

Composition

  • Internal gel: carbomer, glycerol, water (non-toxic gel formulation as stated for Koolpak children’s gel packs).
  • Outer pouch: flexible, sealed plastic outer in an elephant character shape (exact polymer not specified; designed to be soft against the skin when used with a cloth cover).
  • Pack weight: approximately 100 g.
  • Pack size: approximately 11 × 12 cm.

Formulation

  • Type: reusable hot and cold gel pack for external use only.
  • Design: child-friendly elephant character graphic to encourage use and reduce anxiety.
  • Physical properties: flexible when chilled or warmed so it can conform to the contours of small body areas.
  • Therapy modes: can be used as a cold compress after pre-chilling or freezing, or as a warm compress after heating in hot water according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Intended user group: children, when used under adult supervision.

Packaging

  • Supplied as a single Elly the Elephant gel pack per retail unit.
  • Pack dimensions: approximately 11 × 12 cm (children’s size).
  • Trade/carton quantity from manufacturer: cartons of 80 units (code ELL80) for wholesale customers.
  • Retailers typically supply individual packs for inclusion in first-aid kits or as standalone items.

Usage

  • Use only under adult supervision and for external use only.
  • For cold use: store the pack in a refrigerator or freezer before use so it is ready to apply quickly after a minor injury. If frozen solid, allow the pack to soften slightly before application so it remains flexible.
  • For hot use: heat the pack by immersing it in hot (not boiling) water for several minutes, following the time and temperature guidance on the pack/leaflet. Do not overheat and do not heat in a microwave unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically permit it.
  • Always check the temperature of the pack before applying to a child’s skin to ensure it is comfortably warm or cool, not extreme.
  • Never apply the pack directly to bare skin; wrap it in a clean cloth, paper towel or protective cover to avoid thermal injury, especially on children’s more sensitive skin.
  • Apply to the affected area for short intervals, typically up to around 20 minutes at a time, then remove and allow the skin to return to normal temperature before reapplying, in line with general hot and cold therapy guidance printed on Koolpak packs.
  • Cease use immediately if the pack causes pain, excessive discomfort, numbness or skin changes such as whitening, blistering or marked redness, and seek medical advice if necessary.
  • People with circulatory disorders, reduced sensation, diabetes or other medical conditions affecting skin or circulation should consult a healthcare professional before using hot or cold packs.
  • Do not puncture, cut or open the pack. If the pack is damaged, leaking or shows signs of wear, discard it safely.
  • If gel contents accidentally contact eyes, rinse thoroughly with clean water. If swallowed, drink plenty of water and seek medical advice if any concerns arise.
  • Always read and follow the specific instructions and warnings printed on the product packaging before use.

Contraindications

  • Do not use on broken or open wounds unless specifically advised by a healthcare professional.
  • Not suitable for individuals with known hypersensitivity to cold or heat, or with conditions where cold/heat therapy is contraindicated (e.g. certain circulatory disorders or cold urticaria) unless under medical advice.
  • Use with caution, and seek medical advice before use, in children or adults with impaired circulation, reduced skin sensation, diabetes, Raynaud’s disease or similar conditions.
  • Do not use if the pack is punctured, leaking, or damaged.
  • Do not apply for prolonged periods or at extreme temperatures, as this may cause frostbite-like injury or heat burns.
  • Not intended for ingestion or internal use.

Adverse Effects

  • Transient redness or mild skin irritation at the site of application, especially if the pack is overly hot, excessively cold or applied for too long.
  • Discomfort, numbness or tingling if the pack is too cold or if applied without a protective cloth layer.
  • Rarely, cold burns, frostbite-like injury or heat burns if used incorrectly (e.g. applied directly to skin, overheated or left in place for excessive durations).
  • Allergic-type skin reactions are unlikely but may occur with very sensitive individuals; discontinue use if a rash or significant irritation develops.
  • If the pack is punctured and contents contact eyes or are swallowed, local irritation, nausea or discomfort may occur; follow first-aid advice on the pack and seek medical attention if necessary.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not being used chilled or heated.
  • For ready cold use, the pack may be stored in a refrigerator; it can also be kept in a freezer according to the manufacturer’s guidelines, ensuring it is allowed to soften slightly before application so it remains flexible.
  • Do not expose the pack to naked flames, ovens, grills or direct boiling water, and do not overheat beyond the times/temperatures stated on the packaging.
  • Keep out of the reach of unsupervised children; the pack should only be used with adult supervision.
  • Do not place heavy or sharp objects on top of the pack and avoid puncturing or cutting the outer pouch.
  • Check the pack periodically for signs of damage or leakage and dispose of it safely if compromised.

Duration

Typically used for short treatment sessions of up to around 20 minutes at a time, with sufficient intervals between applications to allow the skin to return to normal temperature. Frequency and overall duration of use should follow the printed instructions on the pack and general hot/cold therapy guidance, or the advice of a healthcare professional.

Onset

Cooling or warming relief is usually felt within minutes of applying the pack to the affected area. Reduction in pain and swelling from minor injuries is typically noticeable during or shortly after each application when used as directed.
