Reusable cooling compression bandage
Description
The Physicool Cooling Bandage Small (Bandage A) is a reusable, pre-treated cooling and compression bandage measuring 10cm x 2m, designed for use on smaller limbs such as the wrist, elbow, calf, ankle and foot. It uses rapid evaporation technology from a medically formulated coolant held in a 100% woven cotton bandage to draw heat out of injured tissues, providing deep-tissue cooling without the need for ice or refrigeration. When wrapped around the affected area, it delivers 360° cooling and compression to reduce pain, swelling and inflammation and to speed up recovery and patient mobility. Each bandage provides approximately 2–3 hours of cooling and can be recharged multiple times with Physicool Coolant, making it a practical, portable alternative to traditional ice-based treatments.
Bnefits
- Rapid evaporation cooling technology draws heat out of the injury, with no need for ice or refrigeration
- Clinically proven to reduce swelling and inflammation and to shorten recovery time from soft-tissue injuries and surgery
- Provides immediate pain reduction by lowering the temperature of the skin and underlying tissues and helping to numb nerve endings
- Combines cooling and compression in one product to support and stabilise the injured area while treating inflammation
- Delivers 360° coverage and even cooling/compression around joints such as the ankle, wrist and elbow
- Long-lasting effect: each pre-treated bandage typically provides 2–3 hours of cooling before requiring recharge
- Reusable and rechargeable using Physicool Coolant, offering a cost-effective alternative to single-use ice packs and cryotherapy devices
- 100% woven cotton with no elastic content, providing natural elasticity and support while remaining breathable and comfortable
- Self-grip strap/Velcro-style fastening allows the bandage to be secured without clips and helps avoid pressure spots
- Easy to apply, including one-handed application, and portable for use in clinics, sports settings, workplaces and at home
- Outperforms traditional ice-based treatments in reducing pain and swelling in comparative clinical evaluations
Indications
- Acute soft-tissue injuries such as sprains, strains and contusions affecting small limbs and joints
- Swelling and inflammation of the wrist, elbow, calf, ankle and foot
- Sports injuries requiring cold compression therapy and rapid recovery support
- Post-operative or post-traumatic pain and swelling management around small joints and limbs
- Chronic inflammatory joint or tendon conditions (e.g. tendonitis, repetitive strain injuries) where local cooling and compression are beneficial
- General musculoskeletal pain where cold therapy and compression are indicated
Composition
- Bandage: 100% woven, undyed cotton with an open-cell weave to retain and slowly release coolant
- Impregnated with a proprietary medically formulated coolant solution based on rapidly evaporating alcohols and cooling agents (exact proprietary formula not publicly disclosed)
- Reusable cotton bandage that can be recharged using Physicool Coolant (500ml or similar recharge products)
Formulation
- Pre-treated cotton cooling bandage, size A (Small): 10cm width x 2m length
- Open-cell cotton weave designed to hold coolant and allow controlled evaporation for sustained cooling
- Single bandage per retail pack, supplied saturated with coolant and ready to use directly from the foil sachet
- Self-grip/Velcro-type strap integrated into the bandage to secure it in place without additional clips
- Intended for use with Physicool Coolant for repeated recharges once the bandage has dried
Packaging
- Individual Physicool Cooling Bandage Small (10cm x 2m) supplied pre-treated in a sealed, resealable foil pack to prevent evaporation before use
- Outer retail packaging/box or labelled sachet with product name, size, usage instructions, storage information and manufacturer details
- Compatible with separate Physicool Coolant recharge bottles (e.g. 500ml) sold as accessories for multiple reuses
Usage
- Remove the pre-treated bandage from its sealed foil pack immediately before use.
- Gently squeeze out any excess coolant over a sink or towel if the bandage feels overly saturated, while keeping it evenly moist.
- Apply the bandage directly to the affected area (e.g. wrist, elbow, calf, ankle or foot), starting distally and wrapping proximally, overlapping each turn to provide even coverage.
- Apply firm but comfortable compression without restricting circulation; check distal circulation (colour, warmth, sensation) after application.
- Secure the bandage using the integrated self-grip/Velcro-style fastening so it stays in place without clips or additional tape.
- Leave in place for a typical application period of around 30 minutes at a time, with each fully charged bandage providing 2–3 hours of total cooling capacity; follow local clinical protocols for duration and frequency of cold therapy.
- Once the bandage has dried out and cooling is no longer felt, remove it and either leave it in place as a dry support bandage or take it off and recharge using Physicool Coolant.
- To recharge: re-roll the dry bandage, place it back into its resealable foil pack and add sufficient Physicool Coolant to saturate (approximately 70–80 ml for a full recharge), seal the pack, shake for about 30 seconds and leave for a few minutes to absorb, then squeeze out excess before the next use.
- Alternatively, Physicool Coolant can be sprayed directly onto the bandage while it is in place on the body to extend or restore cooling, following the coolant product instructions.
- Do not cover the bandage with occlusive materials while in use, as Physicool relies on air flow and evaporation; covering will reduce the cooling effect.
- Reuse the bandage multiple times as long as the cotton remains intact and clean; wash as a normal cotton bandage when necessary and allow to dry fully before recharging.
- Discontinue use and seek medical advice if pain or swelling worsens, if signs of significant injury (e.g. suspected fracture) are present, or if any skin irritation or adverse reaction occurs.
Contraindications
- Do not apply to broken skin, open wounds, active skin infections or ulcerated areas unless specifically directed by a healthcare professional.
- Not suitable for individuals with known hypersensitivity or allergy to any component of the coolant formulation (e.g. alcohols or other cooling agents).
- Use with caution in patients with impaired circulation, peripheral vascular disease, severe diabetes-related neuropathy or conditions where cold therapy may be contraindicated; seek medical advice before use.
- Avoid prolonged or excessive use in individuals with reduced sensation in the treated area, as they may not adequately perceive cold or pressure.
- Not a substitute for appropriate medical assessment in suspected fractures, severe injuries or unexplained pain and swelling.
Adverse Effects
- Potential for transient skin redness, cooling-related discomfort or mild irritation at the application site.
- Over-tight application may impair circulation and cause pain, numbness or tingling distal to the bandage; if this occurs, remove and reapply more loosely.
- Rare risk of contact dermatitis or allergic reaction to coolant components; discontinue use if rash, itching or persistent irritation develops and consult a healthcare professional.
- Excessive or prolonged cold exposure without breaks may cause cold-related skin reactions in sensitive individuals; follow recommended application times.
Storage Conditions
- Store unopened bandages in their original sealed foil packaging in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat.
- Keep the pack tightly sealed when not in use to minimise evaporation of the coolant.
- Store Physicool Coolant recharge bottles (if used) according to their label instructions, typically at room temperature away from open flames or high heat due to alcohol content.
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Do not freeze; refrigeration is not required and may be counterproductive to the evaporation mechanism.
Duration
Typically used in 20–30 minute sessions, with each fully saturated bandage providing around 2–3 hours of cooling effect before needing recharge; can be reused and recharged multiple times over the course of an acute injury or post-operative recovery period as directed by a healthcare professional.
Onset
Cooling and pain relief begin within minutes of application as the coolant evaporates and heat is drawn out of the tissues; many users experience noticeable relief within the first several minutes, with sustained cooling for up to approximately 2–3 hours per charge.
