Venipuncture and IV injection training aid
Description
The Four-Vein Venipuncture Training Aid – Dermalike II™ Latex Free is a compact venipuncture and IV practice pad featuring four barely discernible blue veins embedded in VATA’s proprietary Dermalike II™ material. Three veins are of differing diameters and difficulty levels, while a fourth vein is more deeply placed to simulate challenging access. The soft, skin-like pad allows realistic vein palpation, skin rolling and needle insertion, providing lifelike tactile feedback. Users can practice vein location, cannulation, injection of fluids and withdrawal of simulated blood on a model that closely mimics human tissue. Made entirely latex free, with improved tear resistance and approximately 53% less needle drag than earlier Dermalike formulations, this trainer is designed for repeated use in hospitals, nursing schools, EMS programs, home health agencies and other clinical education settings. A snap-on cover protects the tissue pad during storage and transport, and the small, lightweight, non-staining design makes it a cost-effective alternative or complement to full-size IV arms.
Bnefits
- Four veins of three different sizes plus one deeper vein provide graduated difficulty, allowing learners to progress from easier to more challenging venous access.
- Realistic vein palpation and skin behaviour: the skin rolls under the fingers and a distinct "pop" can be felt as the needle enters the vein.
- Dermalike II™ material offers approximately 50–53% less needle drag and improved tear resistance, supporting a high number of successful needle sticks per pad.
- Permits both injection of fluids and withdrawal of simulated blood, enabling practice of venipuncture, IV starts and basic phlebotomy techniques.
- 100% latex-free construction reduces risk for users and learners with latex sensitivity.
- Compact, lightweight and non-staining design is easy to store, transport and set up in classrooms, skills labs and clinical environments.
- Cost-effective alternative to full IV training arms, with lower cost per use and quick setup.
- Supports objective assessment and maintenance of staff competency in venous access techniques.
- Available in lightly and darkly pigmented versions to support training on a range of skin tones.
Indications
- Training and practice in peripheral venipuncture and IV cannulation techniques for nurses, doctors, paramedics, EMTs, phlebotomists, vet techs and other clinical staff.
- Teaching and assessment of hand-eye coordination, vein palpation and needle insertion skills in nursing schools, medical schools and allied health education programs.
- Ongoing competency assessment and refresher training in hospitals, outpatient clinics, home health and infusion services.
- Skills practice for vascular access courses, simulation-based training sessions and OSCE-style assessments.
- Demonstration of venipuncture and IV techniques in in-service training, workshops and continuing education events.
Composition
- Tissue pad made from proprietary Dermalike II™ synthetic material designed to simulate the feel and mechanical properties of human skin and subcutaneous tissue.
- Four internal synthetic veins (tubing) of three different diameters, with one vein positioned deeper in the pad to simulate difficult access.

Usage
- Place the Four-Vein Venipuncture Training Aid on a stable, level surface with adequate lighting and workspace around the model.
- If using simulated blood or fluid, set up the fluid system according to the user manual, ensuring correct connection of tubing, reservoirs and stopcocks, and removal of air bubbles where applicable.
- Prior to needle insertion, palpate the surface of the Dermalike II™ pad to locate the underlying veins; note differences in vein size and depth and choose an appropriate practice site.
- Prepare the needle or IV catheter as you would for a real patient (e.g. select appropriate gauge such as 20–22G for training, check protective caps, ensure simulated blood supply is ready).
- Stabilise the model, apply traction to the skin surface if desired and insert the needle at an appropriate angle, feeling for the characteristic "pop" as you enter the vein.
- Upon correct entry into the vein (when plumbed to a simulated blood source), observe flashback of simulated blood to confirm proper needle placement, then practice advancing the catheter and securing as appropriate.
- Practice both injection of fluids and withdrawal (aspiration) of simulated blood to simulate real venipuncture and IV start procedures.
- Rotate practice sites across the different veins and portions of the pad to prolong pad life and to vary difficulty, progressing from larger superficial veins to smaller and deeper veins.
- After each training session, flush or drain any remaining simulated blood/fluids according to the user manual, and gently clean the pad surface with a soft cloth and mild detergent solution if needed; avoid harsh chemicals or sterilisation processes that could damage the Dermalike II™ material.
- Allow the model to dry fully, then attach the snap-on cover and store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Inspect periodically for excessive wear or tearing of the pad or veins and replace components as recommended by the manufacturer.
Contraindications
- Not for use on or in human or animal patients; the model is for simulation and training use only.
- Do not use with real medications, blood or other biological fluids; only use manufacturer-approved simulated blood or training solutions.
- Do not use needles larger or longer than those recommended by the manufacturer, as this may damage the Dermalike II™ pad or underlying veins.
- Do not expose the model to open flames, extreme heat sources, solvents or harsh disinfectants that may degrade the synthetic materials.
- Although the model is 100% latex free, users should still follow institutional policies for infection prevention and sharps safety.
Adverse Effects
- No direct patient adverse effects, as this is a training device not used on living subjects.
- Risk of sharps injury to learners or instructors if standard sharps-handling precautions are not observed during training.
- Damage to the model (tears, leaks, punctures through the base) may occur if inappropriate needle sizes, angles or excessive force are used.
- Spillage of simulated blood or training fluids may occur if the model is overfilled, handled incorrectly or if tubing connections are not secure; this may require local clean-up and can stain unprotected surfaces if non–stain-resistant fluids are used.
Storage Conditions
- Store in a cool, dry place at normal room temperature, away from direct sunlight and sources of excessive heat.
- Keep the snap-on cover in place when the model is not in use to protect the Dermalike II™ pad from dust, debris and accidental damage.
- Avoid storing heavy objects on top of the model or bending the pad, as this could deform the tissue surface or damage the internal veins.
- If the model has been used with simulated blood or fluids, ensure that internal tubing and reservoirs are drained and dry before long-term storage to minimise risk of microbial growth or staining.
- Store away from sharp instruments or edges that might puncture the pad, veins or fluid connections.
Duration
Not applicable; this is a reusable venipuncture training simulator. Individual training sessions typically last from a few minutes to an hour or more, and the model is designed to withstand many hundreds of needle insertions when used with appropriate gauge needles and correct technique.
Onset
Not applicable in a clinical therapeutic sense; realistic tactile feedback, vein flashback and skill acquisition occur immediately during use.
