Cardiology Stethoscope

Description

The 3M Littmann Cardiology IV Stethoscope (model 6168) with black-finish stainless steel chestpiece and navy blue tubing is a premium dual-head cardiology stethoscope designed for clinicians who require outstanding acoustic performance. Featuring tunable single-piece diaphragms on both adult and paediatric sides, double-lumen long-life tubing, an ergonomic high-profile chestpiece and a 7-year warranty, it provides exceptional versatility for advanced cardiac and pulmonary auscultation in both adult and paediatric patients.

Bnefits

  • Advanced dual-head cardiology stethoscope with superior acoustic performance for detailed cardiac and pulmonary assessment.
  • Improved high-frequency acoustics to help detect subtle heart sounds and murmurs for more precise clinical decision-making.
  • Tunable single-piece diaphragms on both adult and paediatric sides allow easy switching between low- and high-frequency sounds by adjusting pressure.
  • Double-lumen next-generation tubing design reduces external friction noise and improves sound transmission.
  • High-profile chestpiece construction with larger diameter and deeper bell compared with the Classic III for enhanced performance.
  • Dual-sided chestpiece provides both adult and paediatric auscultation surfaces, maximising versatility in one instrument.
  • Paediatric side can be converted to a traditional open bell using the supplied non-chill bell sleeve adapter.
  • Anatomically angled headset and soft-sealing Snap-Tight eartips ensure comfort and an excellent acoustic seal.
  • Latex-free construction and improved resistance of tubing to skin oils and alcohol contribute to durability and patient comfort.
  • Industry-leading 7-year warranty for long-term reliability and peace of mind.
  • Optional high-quality laser engraving service available from the distributor to personalise the stethoscope and help deter loss or theft.

Indications

  • Auscultation of heart sounds, murmurs and extra heart sounds in adult and paediatric patients.
  • Assessment of lung sounds and breath sounds across a wide range of frequencies.
  • Use in cardiology, internal medicine, emergency medicine, anaesthetics, intensive care and high-acuity settings.
  • General physical examination and monitoring in hospital wards, clinics and primary care settings where high acoustic performance is desired.
  • Teaching and training of medical students and residents in advanced auscultation.

Composition

  • Chestpiece material: stainless steel with black finish.
  • Chestpiece technology: double-sided, tunable adult and paediatric diaphragms.
  • Adult diaphragm: single-piece tunable diaphragm, diameter approximately 4.3 cm, epoxy/fiberglass.
  • Paediatric diaphragm: single-piece tunable diaphragm on the smaller side; removable to convert to an open bell with non-chill sleeve.
  • Bell side: finely tuned for instant low-frequency sound detection when used in bell mode.
  • Headset material: lightweight, wide-diameter aerospace alloy / anodised aluminium.
  • Tubing: next-generation, double-lumen long-life tubing, latex-free and designed to resist skin oils and alcohol.
  • Eartips: soft-sealing Snap-Tight eartips (large size fitted; small soft-sealing and large firm eartips in spare parts kit).
  • Non-chill rims and diaphragm edges for improved patient comfort.

Formulation

  • Mechanical acoustic stethoscope (no electronic amplification) with dual-head tunable chestpiece.
  • Tunable diaphragm technology that allows low-frequency sounds to be heard with light pressure and high-frequency sounds with firm pressure.
  • Double-lumen binaural tubing incorporating two sound paths in a single tube to minimise external rubbing noise.
  • Ergonomic headset with anatomically correct angle for optimal ear canal alignment and sound transmission.
  • High-profile chestpiece design approximately 40% larger and with a 60% deeper bell than the Littmann Classic III.
  • Latex-free and phthalate-free tubing composition for improved safety and durability.

Packaging

  • One Littmann Cardiology IV Stethoscope, model 6168 (black-finish chestpiece with navy blue tubing).
  • Spare parts kit including: small soft-sealing eartips, large firm grey eartips and a non-chill bell sleeve for converting the paediatric side to an open bell.
  • Instruction leaflet/user guide with care, cleaning and troubleshooting information.
  • Retail presentation box with Littmann branding and model identification.
  • Supplied by Medisave with optional laser engraving and supporting documentation such as invoice and warranty information.

Usage

  • Adjust the headset so that the eartips point slightly forward, aligning with the direction of the ear canals for optimal sound transmission.
  • Select the desired side of the chestpiece (adult or paediatric/bell) by rotating the stem until the visual indicator aligns with the active side.
  • Use light pressure on the tunable diaphragm to emphasise low-frequency sounds (bell mode) and firmer pressure to emphasise high-frequency sounds (diaphragm mode).
  • For paediatric or small-body auscultation, rotate to the smaller side of the chestpiece; optionally fit the non-chill sleeve to use it as a traditional open bell.
  • Place the chestpiece directly on the patient’s skin where possible to maximise acoustic quality and reduce clothing noise.
  • After use, wipe the stethoscope—especially the eartips and chestpiece—with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or a similar approved disinfectant; avoid immersion in liquids and exposure to extreme heat.
  • Periodically remove and clean or replace eartips to maintain hygiene and acoustic seal.
  • Avoid exposing the tubing to solvents, oils or prolonged direct sunlight to prolong its life.
  • Store the stethoscope in a cool, dry place, ideally in its box or a dedicated case when not in use.
  • Do not sterilise using high-temperature methods such as autoclaving, and do not subject the stethoscope to extreme temperatures.

Contraindications

Not publicly listed

Adverse Effects

  • Prolonged or excessive pressure on the patient’s skin may cause temporary discomfort or redness.
  • Improperly cleaned eartips or chestpiece surfaces may contribute to cross-contamination if infection-control procedures are not followed.
  • Use of excessive volume in noisy environments may encourage clinicians to press too firmly, potentially causing patient discomfort.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Avoid leaving the stethoscope in hot cars, near radiators or in environments with strong solvents or oils that may damage tubing.
  • Keep the stethoscope in its box or a protective case when not in use to prevent mechanical damage.
  • Ensure the stethoscope is clean and dry before storage.
  • Keep out of reach of children when not supervised by a healthcare professional.

Duration

Not applicable (diagnostic instrument used intermittently for auscultation during clinical assessment).

Onset

Immediate upon proper placement on the patient and use by the clinician.
