General/Monitoring Stethoscope

Description

The 3M Littmann Classic III Monitoring Stethoscope in Turquoise (model 5835) is the next-generation upgrade of the iconic Littmann Classic line. Designed for general physical assessment and monitoring of both adult and paediatric patients, it features a precision-machined, dual-sided stainless steel chestpiece with tunable diaphragms on both sides, a paediatric side that converts to a traditional open bell, next-generation long-life tubing and a 5-year warranty. It combines trusted Littmann acoustic performance with modern materials, improved durability and easy-to-clean single-piece diaphragms.

Bnefits

  • Dual-sided chestpiece with tunable diaphragms on both adult and paediatric sides for versatile auscultation.
  • Tunable diaphragm technology enables easy switching between low- and high-frequency sounds by varying chestpiece pressure.
  • Paediatric side converts to a traditional open bell by replacing the diaphragm with the supplied non-chill rim.
  • Precision-machined, less angular chestpiece design for improved aesthetics and comfort.
  • Single-piece diaphragms are easier to attach and clean, improving infection-control practices.
  • Next-generation tubing offers longer life and improved resistance to skin oils, alcohol and staining.
  • Latex-free, phthalate-free construction to help protect patient and clinician health.
  • High acoustic sensitivity (Littmann performance rating 7/10) suitable for general physical assessment and monitoring.
  • Anatomically designed headset and larger ear tubes for better sound transfer and comfort.
  • Soft-sealing Snap-Tight eartips provide an excellent acoustic seal and help reduce ambient noise.
  • 5-year warranty with free repair for manufacturing and material defects.
  • Wide range of colour and finish combinations, with this model supplied with turquoise tubing and stainless steel chestpiece.
  • Optional laser engraving service available to personalise the scope and help deter loss or theft.

Indications

  • General physical assessment of adult and paediatric patients.
  • Routine monitoring of heart, lung and other internal sounds in primary care, hospital and community settings.
  • Use by doctors, nurses, medical students, paramedics and other healthcare professionals.
  • Diagnostic aid as part of the overall clinical examination of a patient.

Composition

  • Chestpiece: dual-sided stainless steel chestpiece with precision-machined design.
  • Diaphragms: single-piece tunable diaphragms on both adult and paediatric sides.
  • Tubing: next-generation single-lumen PVC-free tubing (turquoise, 69 cm / 27.2" length).
  • Headset: adjustable, anatomically angled metal binaurals with larger diameter ear tubes.
  • Eartips: soft-sealing Snap-Tight eartips (large size fitted) with additional eartips in spare parts kit.
  • Non-chill materials on rim and bell sleeve for patient comfort.
  • Materials specifically manufactured without natural rubber latex or phthalate plasticisers.

Formulation

  • Mechanical acoustic stethoscope with no electronic amplification.
  • Dual-head chestpiece providing adult and paediatric/secondary side functions.
  • Tunable diaphragm technology on both sides: light pressure for low-frequency sounds (bell mode) and firm pressure for high-frequency sounds (diaphragm mode).
  • Paediatric side convertible to a traditional open bell by replacing the diaphragm with the supplied non-chill rim.
  • Single-lumen binaural tubing with increased wall thickness to reduce external noise and improve sound transmission.
  • Stem with open side indicator for visual identification of the active diaphragm side.

Packaging

  • One Littmann Classic III Monitoring Stethoscope, model 5835, with turquoise tubing and stainless steel chestpiece.
  • Spare parts kit typically including small soft-sealing eartips, large firm eartips and a non-chill bell sleeve.
  • Instruction leaflet/user guide including care, cleaning and troubleshooting information.
  • Retail presentation box branded by 3M Littmann and labelled with the model and colour.
  • Distributor (Medisave) packaging and documentation, with optional laser engraving if ordered.

Usage

  • Adjust the headset so that the eartips point slightly forward, aligning with the ear canals for optimal acoustic transmission.
  • Select the active chestpiece side (adult or paediatric/bell) by rotating the stem until the open side indicator aligns with that side.
  • For low-frequency sounds on the adult side, apply light pressure with the diaphragm (bell mode); for high-frequency sounds, apply firm pressure (diaphragm mode).
  • For paediatric auscultation, rotate to the small side; use light pressure for low frequencies and firm pressure for high frequencies.
  • To use a traditional open bell, remove the paediatric diaphragm and fit the supplied non-chill rim.
  • Place the chestpiece directly on the patient’s skin where possible to minimise clothing noise and improve sound quality.
  • After each use, clean chestpiece and eartips with 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes or other approved disinfectant; do not immerse in liquid or subject to extreme temperatures.
  • Periodically remove, clean and inspect eartips and tubing; replace worn parts as needed using Littmann-approved components.
  • Store the stethoscope in a cool, dry location, preferably in its box or a dedicated case, away from extreme heat, cold or solvent exposure.
  • Do not autoclave, expose to high heat or use aggressive solvents that may damage tubing or plastic components.

Storage Conditions

  • Store at room temperature in a clean, dry environment away from direct sunlight.
  • Avoid exposure to extreme heat (e.g., car dashboards, radiators) or cold, which may damage tubing or other components.
  • Keep away from solvents, oils or plasticisers that may degrade tubing.
  • Ensure the stethoscope is dry and clean before storage; preferably store in its original box or a protective case.
