Cardiology Stethoscope

Description

The 3M Littmann Master Cardiology Stethoscope in Plum (model 2167) is the flagship acoustic stethoscope in the Littmann range, offering the highest level of acoustic performance in a single-sided design. It features a handcrafted solid stainless steel chestpiece with a patented tunable diaphragm, double-lumen tubing that eliminates external rubbing noise, and an anatomically designed headset with soft-sealing eartips. With a Littmann performance rating of 10 out of 10, it is engineered for clinicians who require outstanding auscultation quality for cardiac, pulmonary and abdominal assessment.

Bnefits

  • Top-of-the-line Littmann acoustic stethoscope with maximum performance (10/10 Littmann performance rating).
  • Single-sided, handcrafted solid stainless steel chestpiece provides exceptional acoustic sensitivity and durability.
  • 3M tunable diaphragm technology allows quick switching between low- and high-frequency sounds by varying pressure on the chestpiece.
  • Double-lumen tubing design (two sound paths in one tube) improves sound transmission and virtually eliminates rubbing noise.
  • Anatomically designed, adjustable headset optimises sound transmission and clinician comfort.
  • Soft-sealing Snap-Tight eartips create an excellent acoustic seal and help reduce environmental noise.
  • Durable, latex-free tubing designed to withstand repeated flexing (tested to be flexed up to one million times).
  • Plum-coloured tubing (approximately 68.5 cm / 27" length) offers a distinctive, professional appearance.
  • Supplied with a non-chill rim/diaphragm for improved patient comfort during examination.
  • Supported by a 7-year warranty covering manufacturing and material defects.
  • Optional high-quality laser engraving available from the distributor to personalise the chestpiece and deter theft or loss.

Indications

  • Advanced auscultation of heart sounds, murmurs and extra heart sounds in adult and paediatric patients where clinically appropriate.
  • Detailed assessment of lung and respiratory sounds in high-acuity settings.
  • Auscultation of abdominal and bowel sounds during physical examination.
  • Use as a diagnostic aid by cardiologists, internists, respiratory specialists, intensivists, anaesthetists and other clinicians requiring premium acoustic performance.
  • General physical assessment and monitoring in hospitals, clinics and outpatient settings.

Composition

  • Chestpiece: single-sided, handcrafted solid stainless steel chestpiece with Master Cardiology design.
  • Diaphragm: tunable, single-piece floating diaphragm capable of low- and high-frequency response depending on applied pressure.
  • Chestpiece finish: stainless steel with high-quality machining and polishing.
  • Tubing: double-lumen (two sound paths in one) latex-free tubing, plum colour, length approximately 68.5 cm (27").
  • Headset: wide-diameter, anatomically angled metal binaurals for optimal ear canal alignment.
  • Eartips: Littmann Snap-Tight soft-sealing eartips (large size fitted), with additional eartips in the parts kit.
  • Non-chill rim/diaphragm: non-chill materials on patient-contact surfaces for comfort.
  • Materials: manufactured without natural rubber latex to help reduce the risk of latex-related reactions.

Formulation

  • Mechanical acoustic stethoscope (non-electronic) optimised for high-fidelity auscultation.
  • Single-sided chestpiece with tunable diaphragm that acts as both bell and diaphragm depending on applied pressure.
  • Low-frequency (bell mode) auscultation achieved by applying light pressure to the diaphragm.
  • High-frequency (diaphragm mode) auscultation achieved by applying firm pressure to the diaphragm.
  • Double-lumen tubing provides two parallel sound channels in a single outer tube, reducing external rubbing and handling noise.
  • Robust headset and tubing assembly engineered to withstand extensive clinical use and repeated flexing.
  • Designed for adult patients but can be used on older paediatric patients where chest size permits, at clinician discretion.

Packaging

  • One 3M Littmann Master Cardiology Stethoscope, Plum tubing, model 2167.
  • Spare soft-sealing eartips (typically small size) and/or firm eartips, depending on pack configuration.
  • Non-chill rim/diaphragm or accessory components as supplied by the manufacturer.
  • User instruction leaflet including information on use, care, cleaning and troubleshooting.
  • Retail presentation box with Littmann branding and model identification, supplied by Medisave.
  • Optional documentation for engraving if laser engraving has been ordered from the distributor.

Usage

  • Adjust the headset so that the eartips point slightly forward, aligning with the direction of the ear canals for optimal sound transmission.
  • Insert the soft-sealing eartips firmly into the ears to create an effective acoustic seal without causing discomfort.
  • Place the single-sided chestpiece directly on the patient’s skin; use light pressure to emphasise low-frequency sounds (bell mode) and firmer pressure to emphasise high-frequency sounds (diaphragm mode).
  • Use appropriate auscultation sites for cardiac, lung and abdominal examination based on clinical guidelines.
  • Avoid placing the chestpiece over thick clothing or multiple layers, as this may degrade sound quality.
  • After each patient, clean the chestpiece and tubing with 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes or another compatible disinfectant; do not immerse the stethoscope in liquid or expose it to extreme heat.
  • Periodically remove and clean eartips, inspect the tubing and chestpiece for cracks, stiffening or other damage, and replace worn components with approved Littmann parts.
  • Do not autoclave, gas sterilise, or subject the stethoscope to high-temperature sterilisation processes.
  • Store the stethoscope in a safe, clean location (such as its box or a dedicated case) when not in use and avoid bending the tubing sharply around tight objects.

Contraindications

Not publicly listed

Adverse Effects

  • Prolonged or excessive pressure on the patient’s skin may cause transient discomfort or mild erythema.
  • Inadequate cleaning and disinfection between patients may contribute to cross-contamination or infection transmission.
  • Excessive headset tension or poorly fitting eartips may cause discomfort or irritation to the user’s ear canals.
  • Incorrect use or misinterpretation of auscultation findings may lead to diagnostic error if not correlated with other clinical information.

Storage Conditions

  • Store at room temperature in a clean, dry environment away from direct sunlight.
  • Avoid exposing the stethoscope to extreme heat (e.g., on car dashboards, near radiators) or extreme cold, which may degrade tubing and other components.
  • Keep away from solvents, oils and plasticisers that may damage or stain the tubing.
  • Ensure the stethoscope is cleaned and dried before storage, especially after disinfection.
  • Preferably store in its original box or a protective case when not in use to prevent physical damage.
  • Keep out of reach of children and unauthorised users.

Duration

Not applicable \u2013 diagnostic instrument used intermittently during clinical examination and monitoring.

Onset

Immediate upon correct placement of the chestpiece and use by the clinician.
