Bariatric ultrasound scanning couch
Description
The Bariatric Ultrasound Couch (Plinth Medical Model 50CT) is a specialist heavy-duty scanning couch designed to meet the challenges of handling overweight and clinically obese patients. With a safe working load and lifting capacity of 320 kg, the couch features electric operation of height, tilt (including Trendelenburg) and backrest, together with a manually adjustable leg rest that can drop to –90° for lower limb and vascular procedures. The extra-wide, rigid frame and couch top provide exceptional strength and stability, while 140 mm hoist clearance and retractable castors give excellent hoist and floor access in imaging rooms. Comfort foam, hardwearing anti-microbial vinyl upholstery and a removable fold-back arm rest support both patient comfort and infection control, making this couch an ideal solution for ultrasound departments managing bariatric patients.
Bnefits
- Designed specifically for bariatric and clinically obese patients, with a 320 kg safe working load and lifting capacity.
- Electric height adjustment, electric tilt and electric backrest provide effortless, precise patient positioning for ultrasound scanning.
- Motorised tilt allows Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg positioning to optimise imaging and patient comfort.
- Manual leg section with 90° drop (to –90°) enables lower-limb and vascular access during scanning.
- Extremely strong and rigid frame gives outstanding stability, even at full load and in tilted positions.
- Hardwearing anti-microbial vinyl upholstery supports infection-prevention and easy wipe-down cleaning.
- Comfort foam enhances patient comfort during longer scanning sessions.
- Retractable castors and 140 mm hoist clearance provide excellent mobility and compatibility with most mobile hoists.
- Removable fold-back arm rest aids patient security during scanning but can be folded away or removed completely for side access and transfers.
- UK manufactured with lifetime frame and 5-year parts guarantee and an average service life of around 16 years, offering low running costs and durable performance.
Indications
- Ultrasound and other imaging procedures for bariatric and very heavy adult patients.
- General abdominal, obstetric, gynaecological, cardiac, vascular and musculoskeletal ultrasound scanning where robust bariatric support and flexible positioning are required.
- Use in radiology, ultrasound and diagnostic imaging departments that need to safely lift and tilt patients up to 320 kg.
- Clinical environments where extra-wide, high-capacity couches are needed to improve safety and reduce manual handling risks for staff.
Composition
- Heavy-duty steel frame with welded construction and powder-coated finish.
- High-density comfort foam under all upholstered sections.
- Hardwearing, anti-microbial, fire-retardant vinyl upholstery available in multiple healthcare colours.
- Electric actuators (for height, tilt and backrest) with hand or foot control depending on configuration.
- Manual gas-strut or ratchet mechanism for single leg rest section (90° leg drop to –90°).
- Retractable heavy-duty castor base with adjustable foot for uneven floors.
- Removable, fold-back arm rest assembly for patient support during scanning.
- Plastic, rubber and metal fittings for trim, cable management and component protection.
Formulation
- Bariatric ultrasound couch with extra-wide top mounted on a tilting base frame.
- Electric height adjustment (Hi-Lo) operated via handset or footswitch.
- Electric tilt function providing Trendelenburg and reverse Trendelenburg positions.
- Electric backrest from horizontal up to a high sitting angle for semi-recumbent or upright scanning.
- Single manual leg rest with 90° drop (to –90°) for lower-limb positioning.
- Safe working load and lifting capacity: 320 kg (approx. 50 stone).
- Hoist clearance: approximately 140 mm beneath frame for hoist access.
- Retractable castors for easy movement and stable working position when lowered.
- Upholstery typically in standard width with optional colour choice from Plinth Medical’s healthcare vinyl chart.
Packaging
- Supplied as a single, large, fully assembled or partially assembled couch (depending on delivery method) on a pallet or crated for transport.
- Protected with heavy-duty cardboard, foam and wrapping to prevent transit damage.
- Custom upholstery colour and configuration (e.g. arm rest, accessories) confirmed at order and reflected on delivery documentation.
- Delivered by specialist courier or manufacturer’s logistics service, with requirement to pre-advise access constraints such as narrow hallways, stairwells or restricted sites.
Usage
- Install the couch in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, ensuring adequate space, floor strength and access for hoists and staff movement.
- Connect to mains power via the supplied lead; test electric height, tilt and backrest functions before clinical use.
- Adjust couch height electrically to an appropriate level for safe patient transfer and ergonomically safe working height for staff.
- Use the electric tilt to place the patient in the required Trendelenburg, reverse Trendelenburg or flat position for the imaging procedure.
- Position the backrest using the electric control to achieve supine, semi-recumbent or near-sitting postures as required.
- Adjust the manual leg rest to horizontal or down to –90° for lower-limb procedures; ensure locking mechanisms are fully engaged.
- Deploy the removable fold-back arm rest to support the patient during scanning, folding it back or removing it completely when side access or transfers are required.
- Always ensure retractable castors are set so the couch is stable before the patient mounts and during use; engage castors only when moving the couch.
- Do not exceed the stated safe working load of 320 kg.
- After each use, clean the vinyl upholstery and accessible frame surfaces with appropriate healthcare-grade cleaning and disinfectant solutions compatible with anti-microbial vinyl.
- Perform regular checks on upholstery, fixings, actuators, controls and power cable; arrange servicing or repairs per the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule.
Contraindications
- Use with patients whose weight exceeds the stated 320 kg safe working load and lifting capacity.
- Use in locations where the floor cannot safely support the combined weight of the couch, patient and accessories.
- Use in environments with potentially explosive atmospheres or where the electrical classification exceeds the couch’s design specifications.
- Use when visible damage, instability, actuator malfunction or torn/damaged upholstery could compromise safety.
- Use as a lifting platform for equipment or as a step, or for purposes other than supporting patients for examination and scanning.
Adverse Effects
- Risk of patient or staff injury if used beyond the safe working load or on an unsuitable floor surface.
- Potential for entrapment or pinch injury near moving sections (height, tilt, backrest, leg rest) if operated without due care.
- Possible discomfort or pressure issues in patients during very long procedures if additional pressure-relieving aids are not used where indicated.
- Electrical hazard risk if power cables, plugs or actuators become damaged and are not promptly repaired or replaced.
Storage Conditions
- Intended for continuous use in clinical imaging areas; when not in use, lower the couch to a safe height with castors locked and controls safely stowed.
- Operate and store only in dry, indoor environments away from excessive moisture and extreme temperatures.
- Avoid prolonged direct sunlight on upholstery to minimise fading and degradation of vinyl surfaces.
- Route power cables to avoid trip hazards and prevent crushing by castors or other equipment.
- If taken out of service for prolonged periods, disconnect from mains, cover to protect from dust and store in a secure, dry area; inspect before returning to use.
