Gynaecology examination couch / chair

Description

The Plinth Medical Gynaecology Practice Couch (Model 93P) is a multi-purpose gynae/practice couch designed for both gynaecology and general medical examinations. It features a traditional gynae design with tilting seat, chromed lithotomy stirrups and a removable stainless-steel debris tray for optimum patient positioning and clinician access. The couch offers a choice of electric or hydraulic height operation, a seat section with cut-out and pelvic tilt, an adjustable backrest and a separate head section with breathing hole and plug for prone treatments. With a safe working load of 250 kg, retractable castors, hoist clearance of 130 mm and hardwearing anti-microbial, flame-retardant vinyl upholstery over comfort foam, the 93P is built for durability, low running costs and long service life in busy clinical environments.

Usage

  • Install the couch on a level, load-bearing floor surface in accordance with Plinth Medical’s installation instructions, ensuring adequate clearance for movement and hoist access.
  • For electric versions, connect to a suitable mains power outlet and route cables safely away from moving parts and walkways.
  • Use the hydraulic foot pedal or electric control (depending on model) to adjust couch height to a safe working level before and during patient positioning.
  • Adjust the seat tilt and backrest to achieve optimal patient positioning for gynaecology or general examinations, ensuring patient comfort and stability.
  • Position and secure lithotomy stirrups to support the patient’s legs during gynaecology procedures; check that all fixings are tight and the patient feels adequately supported.
  • Slide the stainless-steel debris tray into place beneath the pelvic cut-out area as needed and remove it after procedures for cleaning and disinfection.
  • Use the head section and breathing hole plug to accommodate supine or prone positions as required by the examination or treatment.
  • Ensure retractable wheels are in the locked position and the couch is stable before the patient mounts or dismounts the couch and before starting any procedure.
  • Assist patients on and off the couch, particularly those with mobility limitations or when the couch is set at a higher height.
  • Between patients, clean and disinfect all contact surfaces, including upholstery, stirrups, head section, debris tray and control surfaces, using approved agents compatible with the anti-microbial vinyl and metal components.
  • Perform regular inspection and preventative maintenance as recommended in the manufacturer’s user manual, including checks of the hydraulics or actuators, frame integrity, castors, upholstery and electrical safety (where applicable).

Contraindications

  • Do not use with patients whose weight exceeds the stated safe working load of 250 kg.
  • Do not operate the couch if there is any visible damage, instability, malfunction of hydraulics or electrics, or loose components (including stirrups and tray).
  • Avoid use of steep tilt positions in patients for whom such positioning is clinically inappropriate (for example, certain cardiovascular, respiratory or spinal conditions), based on clinical judgement.
  • Do not use in environments that do not meet the electrical and safety requirements specified for medical electrical equipment (for electric versions).

Adverse Effects

  • Potential discomfort or musculoskeletal strain for patients if positioning (height, tilt, stirrups) is incorrect or procedures are prolonged without repositioning.
  • Risk of falls or slips during mounting and dismounting if the couch height is not appropriately set or if patients are not adequately assisted.
  • Risk of pinch or crush injuries to limbs or fingers if placed near moving sections or mechanisms during height, backrest or seat adjustment.
  • Potential manual-handling injuries to staff if the couch is moved, lifted or adjusted incorrectly or without appropriate equipment (for example, hoists).

Storage Conditions

  • Use and store indoors in a dry clinical environment, protected from excessive moisture, dust and corrosive chemicals.
  • Keep away from direct heat sources or extreme temperatures that could damage hydraulics, electrical components or upholstery.
  • Ensure adequate clearance around the couch for full movement of height, tilt and backrest mechanisms and for safe hoist and staff access.
  • Clean upholstery and metal components regularly using suitable cleaning and disinfecting agents; avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents that could degrade vinyl or paint finishes.
  • For periods of non-use, leave the couch in a neutral, flat position at a moderate height and, for electric versions, isolate from the mains supply in accordance with local policies and manufacturer guidance.

Duration

Not directly applicable; the couch is used for the duration of individual examinations or procedures, which typically range from a few minutes to longer sessions depending on clinical requirements.

Onset

Not applicable; this is a mechanical/positioning device providing immediate functional benefit once adjusted rather than a pharmacological treatment.
