Electric ultrasound scanning couch with seat tilt
Description
The Plinth 2000 Ultrasound Couch - Seat Tilt (Plinth Medical Model 93CT) is a UK-manufactured electric ultrasound scanning couch designed to provide comfortable, accurate patient positioning for a wide range of ultrasound procedures. Electric height adjustment and motorised Trendelenburg seat tilt allow effortless positioning, while a 90° leg drop and removable swing-back armrests support easy patient access in even the smallest scanning rooms. The couch features comfort foam, hardwearing anti-microbial vinyl upholstery, a safe working load of 250 kg and retractable castors with 130 mm hoist clearance. An optional motorised backrest is available for additional versatility.
Bnefits
- Electric height adjustment for low transfer height and optimal working height during scanning procedures
- Motorised Trendelenburg tilt for effortless head-down or head-up positioning and to assist with patient recovery if required
- 90° leg drop to create a compact chair-like position and improve patient access to the couch
- Optional motorised backrest to further improve patient positioning flexibility and operator ergonomics
- Comfort foam padding to enhance patient comfort during longer ultrasound examinations
- Hardwearing, fully washable, fire-retardant anti-microbial vinyl upholstery available in a wide range of colours
- Safe working load of approximately 250 kg, suitable for a broad range of patients
- Retractable castors to allow easy movement within the department while maintaining stability in use
- Hoist clearance of approximately 130 mm, compatible with many mobile patient hoists
- Removable swing-back armrests to support the patient when seated and allow unrestricted access to the scanning area when required
- UK-manufactured couch with lifetime frame guarantee and 5-year parts guarantee and a typical 16-year average service life
- Low running costs and low maintenance due to robust engineering and high-quality actuator motors
Indications
- Positioning and support of patients for general diagnostic ultrasound scanning (e.g. abdominal, pelvic, vascular, obstetric and musculoskeletal examinations)
- Use in radiology and ultrasound departments where electric height and tilt functions are required for safe patient handling and optimal probe access
- Use in outpatient clinics, GP practices, fertility and women’s health clinics that perform ultrasound imaging
- Use in multidisciplinary or private clinics, including aesthetics/dermatology practices that perform ultrasound-guided procedures
- Situations where Trendelenburg tilt and leg drop functions support both scanning access and management of patients who feel faint or unwell
Composition
- Heavy-duty welded steel base and column frame designed for intensive clinical use
- Seat-tilt couch top with back section, seat section and leg section capable of 90° drop
- High-density comfort foam padding on all patient-contact surfaces
- Hardwearing, fire-retardant, anti-microbial vinyl upholstery (Ambla-type) in multiple colour choices
- Electric actuator motors for variable height adjustment and seat/Trendelenburg tilt; optional additional motor for backrest where fitted
- Retractable castor system for mobility when the couch is unoccupied
- Adjustable stabilising foot or feet to ensure stability on uneven floors
- Removable swing-back armrests attached to the backrest section for patient support
- Breathing hole and plug available for specific prone procedures (as per manufacturer options)
Formulation
- Electric variable-height ultrasound couch with integrated seat tilt and manual or motorised backrest (depending on chosen options)
- Electric height adjustment operated via a hand control to position the couch between low transfer height (approximately 52 cm) and working height (approximately 101 cm)
- Electric Trendelenburg seat tilt enabling head-down (negative tilt) or head-up (positive tilt) positions during scanning or for patient recovery
- Leg section designed to drop to approximately 90° to create a seated position and facilitate patient access and egress
- Removable swing-back armrests to provide lateral support when seated and allow clear ultrasound probe access when moved away
- Retractable castors engaged for moving the couch; castors retracted and stabilising foot adjusted before patient use
- Designed and supplied as a Class I medical device ultrasound couch for use with external ultrasound imaging equipment

Usage
- Install the ultrasound couch on a firm, level floor with sufficient space around it for patient transfer, clinician access and ultrasound equipment.
- Ensure the retractable castors are retracted and the stabilising foot is adjusted so the couch is stable before any patient transfers on or off the couch.
- Connect the couch to a suitable earthed mains power outlet and check that the power cable is undamaged and routed to avoid trip hazards.
- Use the hand control to lower the couch to a safe transfer height before assisting the patient onto the couch; once the patient is positioned, raise the couch to a comfortable working height.
- Adjust the seat tilt (Trendelenburg function) using the hand control to achieve the desired scanning position, ensuring the patient is safely supported at all times.
- Set the leg section to horizontal or drop it to 90° as required for patient access or specific scanning positions; ensure locking mechanisms are engaged before beginning the examination.
- If a motorised backrest is fitted, adjust it using the appropriate control to fine-tune the patient’s upper body position for optimal ultrasound access and comfort.
- Position and lock the swing-back armrests to support the patient when seated, then swing them away or remove them to improve probe access to the scanning area when needed.
- Monitor the patient during scanning, particularly when using Trendelenburg positions; return the couch slowly to a neutral position if the patient feels faint or uncomfortable.
- After use, return the couch to a neutral, low position, assist the patient to get off safely and disconnect the mains supply if the couch will not be used for an extended period.
- Clean the upholstery and armrests between patients using warm water and neutral detergent on a damp cloth, followed by a wipe with clean water and thorough drying with a soft towel.
- For decontamination after contact with blood or other bodily fluids, clean first, then wipe with an appropriate dilute hypochlorite solution in line with local infection control procedures, rinse with clean water and dry.
- Perform regular six-monthly checks on fasteners, moving parts, armrest fixings and electrical cables, and arrange an annual service by a qualified engineer as recommended by the manufacturer.
