Bacteriostatic water for injection

Description

Bacteriostatic Water 30 ml is a sterile, non-pyrogenic water for injection preserved with 0.9% benzyl alcohol (9 mg/mL). The bacteriostatic preservative allows the vial to be used as a multi-dose container: multiple withdrawals may be made using a sterile needle and syringe, for diluting or dissolving injectable medicines prior to parenteral administration (e.g. intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous).

Bnefits

  • Sterile, non-pyrogenic diluent suitable for reconstitution or dilution of injectable medicines.
  • Contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol preservative, allowing multiple withdrawals from the same vial under aseptic conditions, reducing waste and cost.
  • Enables safe dilution or dissolution of drugs requiring an aqueous vehicle prior to injection (intravenous, intramuscular or subcutaneous).
  • Convenient 30 ml vial size for multiple doses or clinical uses.
  • Widely used and accepted in clinical, research and aesthetic settings to prepare injectable medications reliably and consistently.

Indications

  • Dilution or dissolution of medications that require an aqueous vehicle for injection, where the drug’s prescribing information permits bacteriostatic water for reconstitution.

Composition

  • Water for injection (sterile, non-pyrogenic).
  • Benzyl alcohol 0.9% (9 mg/mL) as a bacteriostatic preservative.

Formulation

  • Pharmaceutical form: Sterile aqueous solution for injection (bacteriostatic water).
  • Contained in a multi-dose vial (30 ml) suitable for multiple withdrawals under aseptic conditions.

Packaging

  • 30 ml multi-dose vial, sealed for sterile injection diluent use.

Usage

  • For use as a diluent only — draw the required volume with a sterile syringe and needle under aseptic technique, then add to the medicinal product requiring reconstitution, following that product’s instructions.
  • Do not inject Bacteriostatic Water alone intravenously (unless made isotonic with solute), because it is not isotonic and may cause hemolysis.
  • Do not use in neonates or infants due to potential toxicity of benzyl alcohol.
  • Use only for parenteral routes as specified (IV, IM or SC) and only after reconstitution of another medicine — it has no therapeutic activity by itself.
  • Inspect reconstituted solution for clarity and absence of particulates before administration.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to benzyl alcohol or any component of the solution.
  • Use in neonates, due to risk of benzyl alcohol toxicity (e.g. “gasping syndrome”).
  • Parenteral use for fluid replacement — Bacteriostatic Water is not intended for use as a replacement fluid without solute.

Adverse Effects

  • Potential for hypersensitivity reactions due to benzyl alcohol (e.g. rash, allergic reactions).
  • If injected intravenously without appropriate dilution/solute, risk of haemolysis.
  • Possible local reactions, infection or inflammation at injection site, depending on the reconstituted drug and handling.

Storage Conditions

  • Store at controlled room temperature as specified on label (e.g. 20–25 °C).
  • Keep vial closed and protect from contamination; use sterile technique for each withdrawal.
  • Discard vial or any remaining solution if sterility is compromised or after recommended in-use period as per local protocols.
