Paraffin Liquid/Soft White 50/50 Ointment (Fifty:50 Ointment) is a very greasy, fragrance-free emollient containing 50% liquid paraffin BP and 50% white soft paraffin BP. Formulation

  • Topical ointment
  • 50:50 mixture of liquid paraffin and white soft paraffin
  • Very greasy, occlusive emollient
  • Fragrance-free, colour-free, preservative-free

Packaging

  • 250 g white plastic tub with screw-top lid
  • Packaged for topical external use only

Usage

  • Ensure hands are clean before use.
  • For use as an emollient: apply a thin layer to affected or dry areas of skin as often as required and gently smooth in.
  • Apply in the direction of hair growth to help reduce the risk of folliculitis or ingrown hairs.
  • Use at least twice daily and ideally three to four times daily in active flare-ups, or as directed by a healthcare professional.
  • For use as a bath additive: dissolve a portion of the ointment in hot water, mix well, and add to the bath. Take care as the bath surface may become slippery; pat the skin dry gently after bathing.
  • For use as a soap substitute or skin cleanser: use on wet skin when washing or showering, then rinse off and gently pat dry.
  • If using with topical corticosteroids or other medicated creams, generally apply the emollient first and wait around 30 minutes before applying other topical treatments, in line with local guidance.
  • For external use on the skin only. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth and mucous membranes.
  • If the ointment appears to separate in the tub, stir well before use.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to liquid paraffin, white soft paraffin or any component of the product.
  • Use on acutely infected skin lesions unless under medical supervision.
  • Avoid application to the same area immediately before procedures involving open flames or ignition sources (e.g. smoking, naked flames, gas fires) due to fire risk from paraffin-soaked dressings or clothing.

Adverse Effects

  • Local skin irritation or redness at the site of application.
  • Folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles), particularly if used excessively or applied against the direction of hair growth.
  • Potential exacerbation of acne or occlusive follicular eruptions in predisposed individuals due to the very greasy, occlusive nature of the ointment.
  • Increased risk of severe burns if paraffin-containing product soaks into clothing, dressings, bedding or other fabrics that are then exposed to naked flames, cigarettes or other ignition sources.
  • Slipping hazard when used as a bath additive due to residue on bath or shower surfaces.

Storage Conditions

  • Store at room temperature, ideally below 25°C, in a cool, dry place.
  • Keep container tightly closed when not in use.
  • Keep away from open flames, cigarettes, gas fires and other ignition sources due to paraffin content.
  • Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Duration

Use as often and for as long as needed to control dry skin conditions; suitable for long-term continuous use under the advice of a healthcare professional.

Onset

Soothing and moisturising effect typically occurs shortly after application; optimal improvement in skin hydration and barrier function is seen with regular use over several days or longer.
