Fine-needle aspiration syringe handle / pistol-grip syringe holder

Description

The Cameco SY003 Universal Syringe Pistol is a precision-engineered, reusable syringe holder designed to facilitate fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and other aspiration procedures. Machined from lightweight aluminium with stainless steel guides, the pistol-style handle securely holds compatible syringes (e.g. Once, Codan, Terumo, KD-ject in 10–20 ml sizes) and guides the needle, allowing the clinician to generate and control suction using one hand while keeping the other hand free to stabilise the lesion or patient. The design enables accurate needle positioning, improves user comfort and can be less traumatic for patients than conventional finger-grip aspiration techniques. The device is autoclavable, making it suitable for repeated use in hospital, pathology, oncology, gynaecology, urology and other clinical settings where FNA and diagnostic aspirations are performed.

Bnefits

  • Ergonomic pistol-grip handle enables one-handed control of syringe plunger and needle, freeing the other hand to palpate and stabilise the lesion.
  • Precision-machined from lightweight aluminium with stainless steel guides for durability, stability and accurate needle guidance.
  • Designed to hold compatible 10–20 ml syringes (e.g. Once, Codan, Terumo, KD-ject), offering flexibility with commonly used disposable syringes.
  • Facilitates quick, easy performance of fine-needle aspiration biopsies with consistent suction and needle control.
  • Allows fine, precise needle positioning to improve sampling accuracy in FNA procedures.
  • May be less traumatic and more comfortable for patients than conventional manual finger-grip methods, when used by experienced clinicians.
  • Reusable and autoclavable, supporting standard steam sterilisation processes and repeated clinical use.
  • Widely used across multiple specialties including oncology, gynaecology, urology and pathology for cytological sampling.
  • Robust construction suitable for repeated clinical handling and sterilisation cycles.
  • Compact instrument that integrates easily into existing biopsy and aspiration workflows without requiring power or complex setup.

Indications

  • Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of palpable lesions such as breast lumps, thyroid nodules, lymph nodes and salivary gland masses.
  • Cytological sampling in oncology, gynaecology and urology for diagnostic purposes.
  • Procedures requiring controlled aspiration such as supra-pubic bladder puncture in the diagnosis of urinary tract infections (as described by suppliers).
  • Common salt washing of chromium-marked blood corpuscles in injection bottles, as referenced in supplier usage descriptions.
  • General aspiration procedures where a pistol-grip syringe holder providing stable needle control and negative pressure is advantageous.
  • Use as a universal syringe handle for compatible 10–20 ml syringes in clinical environments where fine, controlled aspiration is required.

Composition

  • Main body: precision-machined lightweight aluminium.
  • Guides and key structural elements: stainless steel guides and components.
  • Mechanical pistol-grip trigger mechanism integrated into aluminium body.
  • Designed to accommodate compatible disposable plastic syringes (e.g. Once, Codan, Terumo, KD-ject) in 10–20 ml sizes.
  • Autoclavable materials suitable for standard steam sterilisation (as specified by suppliers).

Formulation

  • Non-sterile mechanical medical instrument (syringe handle / pistol-grip holder).
  • Reusable, autoclavable pistol-style handle for compatible 10–20 ml syringes.
  • No medicinal or pharmaceutical formulation; device only.

Packaging

  • Supplied as a single Cameco SY003 Universal Syringe Pistol (391-946-E) per package.
  • Typically provided in a protective box or tray suitable for storage and transport (exact packaging may vary by distributor).
  • Accompanied by basic product and safety information from the distributor or manufacturer where applicable.
  • Intended for professional use in clinical environments; syringes are not generally included and must be sourced separately.

Usage

  • Use only by trained healthcare professionals familiar with fine-needle aspiration and aspiration procedures.
  • Before first use and between patients, clean and sterilise the syringe pistol according to institutional protocols and manufacturer recommendations (e.g. autoclaving).
  • Select a compatible 10–20 ml disposable syringe (e.g. Once, Codan, Terumo, KD-ject) appropriate for the planned procedure.
  • Mount the syringe securely into the Cameco SY003 Universal Syringe Pistol, ensuring it is correctly seated and locked in place according to the device’s design.
  • Attach an appropriate sterile needle for the planned procedure, following local clinical guidelines for needle gauge and length.
  • Prepare the patient and planned puncture site using standard aseptic technique (e.g. skin disinfection, draping).
  • Hold the pistol in the dominant hand, with the index and middle fingers and thumb placed on the trigger and grip as designed, leaving the non-dominant hand free to palpate and stabilise the lesion.
  • Insert the needle into the target lesion or site while controlling direction and depth using the pistol-guided syringe.
  • Create negative pressure by squeezing the pistol trigger or handle to retract the syringe plunger in a controlled manner while performing in-and-out or fanning needle movements as clinically indicated.
  • Release suction before withdrawing the needle from the lesion to minimise contamination of the needle track, following local FNAB technique recommendations.
  • After the sample is obtained, disconnect the syringe from the pistol, expel the aspirated material onto slides or into collection containers, and process according to laboratory protocols.
  • After use, remove and safely discard needles and syringes into appropriate sharps containers.
  • Clean and inspect the syringe pistol for signs of wear or damage, then reprocess and sterilise (e.g. autoclave) before the next use.

Contraindications

  • Do not use in patients or procedures where fine-needle aspiration or needle-based sampling is contraindicated (e.g. uncorrected coagulopathy, highly vascular lesions at risk of serious bleeding, or clinical scenarios deemed unsuitable by the responsible physician).
  • Do not use if the syringe pistol is visibly damaged, deformed, corroded or does not operate smoothly, as this may compromise procedure safety and control.
  • Do not use with syringes that are not compatible with the Cameco SY003 mounting system (only use specified 10–20 ml syringes such as Once, Codan, Terumo, KD-ject as per supplier information).
  • Do not use on or near patients with metal hypersensitivity if there is concern that contact with exposed metallic parts (e.g. during handling or accidental skin contact) may provoke a reaction.
  • Do not use if proper sterilisation facilities and infection prevention measures are not available.
  • Not intended for non-clinical users or use outside appropriate medical or veterinary environments.

Adverse Effects

  • Potential for procedure-related complications associated with all fine-needle aspiration techniques, including pain, minor bleeding, haematoma, infection or, rarely, damage to adjacent structures, depending on the site and technique.
  • If used improperly, excessive suction or uncontrolled needle movement may increase tissue trauma or patient discomfort.
  • Device malfunction (e.g. sticking mechanism or misalignment) may lead to unpredictable plunger movement and suboptimal sampling if not identified before use.
  • Risk of cross-contamination or infection if the pistol is not adequately cleaned and sterilised between patients.
  • Operator fatigue or hand strain may occur during repeated or prolonged use, though the pistol grip is designed to reduce this compared to some other methods.

Storage Conditions

  • Store the syringe pistol in a clean, dry environment, protected from dust, moisture and corrosive chemicals.
  • After cleaning and sterilisation (e.g. autoclaving), ensure the instrument is completely dry before storage to reduce the risk of corrosion or degradation.
  • Keep the device in its designated tray, case or rack to prevent mechanical damage and to protect alignment of the guides and moving parts.
  • Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures outside the ranges recommended for autoclave cycles and general instrument storage.
  • Inspect periodically for signs of wear, corrosion or mechanical malfunction and remove from service if any defects are identified.

Duration

Not applicable; the device is used during individual aspiration procedures and is a long-life reusable instrument when properly maintained.

Onset

Not applicable; this is a mechanical medical device with no pharmacological effect. Functional benefits occur immediately when the device is used during aspiration procedures.
