Description

KleenSpec 590 Premium Disposable Vaginal Specula with Smoke Tube, Small x48, are single-use acrylic specula from Welch Allyn’s 590 Series, designed for gynaecological electrosurgical procedures where smoke evacuation is required. Each speculum incorporates an integrated smoke tube to allow connection to a smoke evacuation system for removal of surgical plume. The clear, smooth acrylic blades provide full visualisation of the vaginal canal, while the ergonomic handle, strong grip and flexible yoke support comfortable, controlled one-handed operation. Supplied as a case of 48 small specula (12 per inner box, 4 boxes per case), they are compatible with Welch Allyn KleenSpec Corded and Cordless Illumination Systems as well as external light sources.

Usage

For professional use only by suitably trained healthcare providers (e.g. gynaecologists, colposcopists, physicians, advanced practitioners).
Select the appropriate size (Small, 59005) based on patient anatomy and procedural requirements.
If using with a KleenSpec Illumination System, attach the compatible corded or cordless light source to the speculum following the illuminator’s instructions for use.
Connect the smoke tube to the facility’s smoke evacuation system or suction line according to local protocol, ensuring secure connection and appropriate flow settings.
Position the patient (typically lithotomy position) and follow standard gynaecological examination and procedural technique.
Gently insert the closed speculum into the vaginal canal, then use the one-handed control to open the blades to the required width and lock into place using the positive locking positions.
During electrosurgical treatment, ensure the smoke evacuation system is active so that plume is removed via the smoke tube.
On completion of the procedure, unlock and gently close the blades before withdrawing the speculum from the vaginal canal.
Disconnect the smoke tubing, remove the speculum, and dispose of it immediately as clinical waste; do not reprocess or reuse.
Follow local infection prevention, smoke evacuation and sharps/clinical waste policies at all times.

Contraindications

Use is generally contraindicated where speculum insertion is not clinically appropriate (e.g. certain acute pelvic injuries, suspected uterine or vaginal perforation, severe unexplained vaginal bleeding) unless specifically directed by a clinician.
Use with caution or alternative sizes in patients with significant vaginal stenosis, severe atrophy or pronounced pain intolerance.
Do not use if the speculum or integrated smoke tube appears cracked, damaged, deformed or contaminated before use.

Adverse Effects

Transient discomfort or pressure during insertion and opening of the speculum, as with any pelvic examination.
Possible minor abrasions or bleeding of the vaginal mucosa, particularly in patients with fragile or atrophic tissue.
Improper insertion technique or excessive force may increase risk of pain, trauma or patient distress.
Inadequate smoke evacuation setup may reduce the effectiveness of plume removal, potentially impacting visibility or perceived odour/exposure for staff.

Storage Conditions

Store in a clean, dry environment at room temperature.
Keep in original packaging until use to protect from dust, moisture and mechanical damage.
Avoid exposure to excessive heat, direct sunlight or heavy loads that could warp or crack the acrylic components.
Keep out of reach of children and unauthorised persons.
