Description

KleenSpec Vaginal Specula - Premium 590 Series, Large x72 are single-use disposable vaginal specula from Welch Allyn’s 590 Series, designed to eliminate the time and expense of reprocessing metal specula and to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Manufactured from clear, smooth acrylic, they provide complete visualization of the vaginal canal and are compatible with KleenSpec Corded and Cordless Illumination Systems or with an external light source. Each case contains 72 large specula (18 specula per box, 4 boxes per case), suitable for pelvic examinations and gynaecological procedures in clinics, GP surgeries and hospitals.

Usage

  • For professional use only by appropriately trained healthcare providers (e.g. doctors, nurses, midwives).
  • Select the correct size (Large, 59004) based on patient anatomy and clinical needs.
  • If using with a KleenSpec illumination system, attach the compatible corded or cordless light source according to the system’s instructions.
  • Position the patient in the appropriate examination position (typically lithotomy) and follow standard gynaecological examination procedures.
  • Gently insert the closed speculum into the vaginal canal, then use the handle and yoke to open the blades to the required width and lock in place with the positive locking mechanism.
  • Inspect the vaginal canal and cervix, and perform necessary diagnostic or treatment procedures.
  • When finished, unlock and gently close the blades before carefully withdrawing the speculum.
  • Dispose of the used speculum immediately in an appropriate clinical waste container; do not attempt to clean or reuse.
  • Follow local infection prevention and control guidelines and institutional policies at all times.

Contraindications

  • Do not use when speculum examination is not clinically indicated or is contraindicated (e.g. certain acute pelvic injuries, suspected uterine or vaginal perforation, or severe unexplained vaginal bleeding) unless directed by a clinician.
  • Use with caution in patients with severe vaginal atrophy, stenosis, or pain disorders; consider alternative sizes or examination methods as appropriate.
  • Do not use if the speculum appears cracked, deformed or damaged, or if the packaging is compromised prior to use.

Adverse Effects

  • Temporary discomfort or pressure during insertion and opening of the speculum is common.
  • In some cases, minor vaginal wall abrasions or light bleeding may occur, particularly in patients with fragile mucosa.
  • Incorrect technique or excessive force may increase patient pain, tissue trauma or distress.
  • As with all examinations, there is a small risk of vasovagal response (light-headedness or fainting) in susceptible patients.

Storage Conditions

  • Store in a clean, dry environment at room temperature.
  • Keep in original packaging until use to protect from dust, moisture and mechanical damage.
  • Avoid excessive heat and direct sunlight that may warp or weaken the acrylic.
  • Keep out of reach of children and unauthorised persons.
